Craft beer fans and chocoholics unite! A beer to appease both crowds is here. Putting their thumbprint on a chocolate ale brings New Glarus Brewing to the edge of decadence.

Pouring a very dark brown, might as well say black, the beer's ivory cap begins to release a rich and robust scent of chocolate immediately. Densely packed with cocoa nibs, Thumbprint Chocolate Stout seduces the nose with milk chocolate, caramel, light coffee and a modest fruitiness of cherry and grape. Tasting lavishly malted, the taste of sweet cream and caramel meet up with the chocolate flavor to give the early palate a high celebration of classic milk chocolate.

The middle palate is largely a continuance of the palate sensations on the front of the tongue. Milk chocolate allows the caramel and light fruits to pull through in a nearly frappuccino way. Creaminess subsides as a mild hop bitterness allows the chocolate to trend slightly bittersweet heading onto the late palate. Hints of coffee come in late with a kahlua spice to give the session a grown-up feel.

Full in body but taking a reserved role, the beer doesn't sacrifice the drinkability of milk stout although the chocolate kicks the flavor spread deep into the dessert end of the meal. A medium long linger of cocoa and coffee bring along its caramelized malt for a taste that finishes much like it started.

Pours a ruddy brown color. Clear albeit dark when held to the light. Thick velvety khaki head slowly dissipates leaving a low hill of foam in the center of the beer. Beer appears thin, but in line for the English style.

Aroma has notes of milk chocolate, roasted malts, cocoa, a touch of cream, with a slight earthy nutty aroma peeping through. Overall a very nice aroma.

Taste has notes of roasted malts that are quickly washed over by notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, sweet cream, and some earthy malt notes. A hint of bittering hops are noted on the back end, but appropriate for the style. Slightly sweet as expected for the style.

Feel is light to medium bodied. Gentle carbonation. Smooth beer with a semi-dry finish.

Overall this is a lovely English sweet stout - true to the style with no gimmicks and excellently executed.

Pours a scarlet-hued chestnut with a thumb of tan head. Nice head retention & pretty average head retention

S: Cocoa & chococlate

T: Follows the nose, powdery dryness as well up front, a touch of vanilla as well. More cocoa powder as this warms, a touch of iron, dryness & a little vanilla. finishes powdery dry with a little vanilla, & cocoa

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation

A nice choclate beer, was expecting great from these guys, this is pretty good, perhaps a touch too dry to really placate me. If you like cocoa, this is your stout. I'm more of a dark chocolate guy

Another Thumbprint series beer from New Glarus. This time it's a chocolate milk stout. Poured from a bottle into a Fibonacci Brewing tulip. Pours out dark brown, not very viscous, and sports two fingers of fine off-white head with good retention. Lots and lots of milk chocolate on the nose. It smells like the confectionaries in Switzerland. Some toffee, roasted malt, and cocoa powder as well.

Medium body with a silky feel and a rich flavor. Sweet toffee, milk chocolate, and sarsaparilla up front, then some cola notes, toasted malt, and a slight kiss of hops. Nothing extreme here, just a pleasant chocolatey milk stout with a sweet-and-roasty balance that is darn near perfect. It reminds me a lot of Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout, especially on the nose.

Deliciously deep and chocolatey, the smell and taste are to die for if you're into sweeter beers. It's fresh, rich, and decadent; none of the flavor profile contains anything artificial or offensive. It tastes like a high quality milk chocolate bar but just sweet enough to be drinkable. It's hard to top New Glarus' dessert and fruit beers and this one is no exception.

Smooth as silk with no after taste. Drove from Des Moines to buy this limited edition after originally going there to buy spotted cow by the same company; another excellent choice. Please do not stop making this stout. If you like West Okiboji you will love this.

Tasted in a Spiegelau stout glass from a 12 fl oz bottle on November 1, 2018. Notes of rich chocolate fudge blend seamlessly with the English Dark Crystal malt. A little light in body, but perfect in every other way. Highly recommended.
