Notes / Commercial Description:
Flanders Sour Red Ale was inspired by the classic sour brews of Belgium. Our Flanders Sour Red was thoughtfully blended by Brewmaster Daniel Carey from his Cellar of young and 3 year old stock. In the traditional method, his expert blending was followed by a rest in the Wild Fruit Cellar. Tart stone fruit and sour apple notes balance delicately forward of the toasted almond body. Every drop was 100% naturally carbonated in the bottle you hold. Our spontaneously fermented Flanders Sour is an eminently vibrant sour experience.

12oz bottle, snifter glass. Darker brown body, not quite opaque, one finger offwhite head, short retention, no lacing. Smell is sweet dark malt, light toffee, mild lemony acidity, a bit of acetic vinegar. Flavour follows; a bit thin and watery; not a ton of flavours behind it. A fairly bland flanders red with a mild acidity to it. Lighter medium body, lower carbonation, a bit thin and doesn't stand up to the likes of Rodenbach.

Appearance - from the bottle the beer poured more brown than red in color.

Smell - The tartness was obvious in the nose, though not overwhelming. This was not a scorch your taste buds sour.

Taste - at the front, the beer is tart, appropriately for style. There are big notes of oak, slight notes of cherry, and acbit dry finish that leaves you thirsty for more.

Mouthfeel - The natural carbonation is appropriate for the style, quickly brushing away any sweetness.

Overall - I was not overwhelmed by this Flanders, but it is a very good interpretation of the style.

Pours a dark reddish brown that is dark red when backlit. Creamy tan eggshell foam that has a nice creamy texture. Sticky collar of lacing, spotty arcs around the glass after a sip.

Aroma has the musty minerally quality of a wet dishrag at first, then segues into dark malts, black cherry, barrel funk, and mild oak. There’s a world of improvement as it warms.

Cherry skins, soft oak, bracing lactic acidity. Pleasant dry oaky aftertaste as the momentary sourness fades. Zero acetic acid. Creamy texture, medium bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall it’s very good, approaching some of NG’s better Flemish-style hits like the original batches of Enigma (2006), Sour Brown Ale, and Wild Sour Ale. Definitely a repeat buy.

Thoroughly enjoy this beer. Even though I've never had a flanders red before, I felt like it matched the description of the style on here.

Deep amber color, only red at the edges of the glass when I held it near the light. Really nice foam that coats the whole top of the beer and has serious legs.

Smell is a sour apple and apricot, very rich and sweet at the same time almost.

Really similar in sour character to gueze tilquin. The sourness is really pungent at first but the body is light but carries it really well. Finishes with Apple, stone fruit that ends sharply. Doesn't have a lingering flavor. It's nearly a perfect taste for a sour to me honestly.

Super drinkable body.

I'm so glad I bought 8 of these.

New Glarus nails wild fermented sour beers like no other American brewer at a reasonable price point and this is no exception. This reminds me of last year's Wild Sour Ale but is more tart and less wild. Aromas and flavors include leather, oak, tannins, sour cherry, and horse blanket. Wonderfully complex and very drinkable with just the right amount of carbonation. I wish I had more than two 4-packs of this incredible beer.

12oz bottle. Poured out an opaque, dark brown color with a small, khaki-colored head of foam. It smelled of dried dark fruits, toffee and sour apple. Great sour, tart taste with cherry and green apple. Subtle bitterness.
