Napoleon hailed this tart beer style "the Champagne of the North." A lively and elegant masterpiece this Berliner Weiss is a kaleidoscope of fresh flavor.

Pours a huge, fluffy white head with tons of sticky lacing clinging to the glass and impressive retention. Brew is a lively, hazy pale lemon yellow.

Extremely tart and musty aroma. Smells of light citrus, funk, hay, candi sugar, banana, and earth. Light, delicate, but not subtle. Inviting.

Flavor is lighter and more restrained than the aroma. Some musty funkiness right up front, mingling with light, creamy wheat. Citric acid - lemons and lemongrass, and a hint of peel - follows, with sharp tartness, washing over your palate.

Light, bright, sharp, refreshing. Fair amount of sting, but it's welcome in this presentation. Very lively. Extremely short finish for the bulk of the flavor, although there is a lighter lingering stickiness.

This is an excellent, excellent beer. It's exactly what you want on a warm Summer day. It strikes me as a very low ABV wheat-based tart Saison.

A - Pours a pale yellow body, clear, with a short white head, quick to fade to nothing. Tiny faint lacing present on the edges.

S - Expected pungent acidity, surprisingly restrained notes of grains and lactic. Does not tip toward yogurt, though.

T - This is where the beer really shines, with pleasant lemon and floral elements coasting over the strong malt and acid at its core.

M - Like the nose, the beer is sharp but sufficiently subtle to keep the beer brisk without being punishing.

O - A 2017 that has held up well. I was not sure what I would find when I poured, and it delivered a delicious take on the style. Another solid New Glarus offering.

Bottled May 2017; drank 8/7/17 @ the Yarchives.

See-through yellow appearance; champagne bubbles throughout.

A rough pour yielded a big, noisy bright white head; decent lace.

Dandelion & faint lemon notes in the nose.

Thin mouthfeel.

Dandelion & mild lemon flavors up front; a mild, pleasant tartness on the finish.

Simple but effective take on the style. I'd have another...and have one in the cellar just for such an occasion.

Somewhat odd, but I think that's what they were going for. Here goes:

A: Slightly cloudy yellow (mostly clear). Pours a decent head that readily dissipates, leaving little lacing. Very little carbonation in the beer.

S: Lemony and very tart/sour. Can detect hay and very peppery scents. Almost like a mild Gose. Good, but not really my cup of tea.

T: Follows the nose. Astringent, sour lemon - very tart. Also fair helpings of hay and wheat with a dash of pepper.

F: Great. Very crispy and refreshing.

O: A good beer, but it's better if you like the style (it's not for everyone).

Look- slightly cloudy golden liquid with a bubbly 1 finger head and nice lacing

Aroma- rhubarb, under ripe blackberries and strawberries, green grapes, faint hay

Taste- tart apples, strawberries, grapes, a mild soft hay-like note underlying everything

Feel- light bodied w/medium carbonation and dry finish

Overall- really nice beer with an insanely complex nose and slightly less complex flavor

this is a cool beer, apparently varying slightly each time around. i was lucky enough to be able to drink the 2016 and the 2017 vintages side by side, the former featuring riesling grapes along, with the latter showcasing both riesling and chardonnay grapes, amazing to be able to have them next to each other, two totally different beers that probably should have their own listings here. its pretty incredible that they are so flavorful and interesting and dynamic at such a low abv, perfect session beers. the 2016 was a little sweeter from the grape, but also quite a bit more sour at this point, possibly getting more and more acidic in the bottle over time, but maybe just a little different to start with. i liked the 2017 a little more i think, with a nice piquant white grape character that didnt really seem to have the sweetness of the riesling alone, more well rounded there, but still super fragrant and interesting. the lacto side of this is really clean, the wheat is full of flavor in both vintages, and the body isnt all that light for what this is, not watered down to me at all, even sturdy for the style, brilliantly done. the white grape character is awesome, especially in the 2017 one, floral and summery, refreshing even, almost a beer wine hybrid but something totally original. i get light farmhouse funk to both of these as well, really pretty interesting, high terroir, awesome stuff. carbonated like soda both of them too. it was a pleasure to get to compare them, and i would be curious about other white grape varietals in future editions! all of these thumbprint series beers have been killer! these were some of the better berliner types i have had this year!

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 10/8/2017. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy pale golden yellow color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lightly tart lemon, lime, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white grape, fruit skin, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, corn, and white bread; with light oak, pepper, Lacto/Brett funk, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, grapes, and light-moderate pale/wheat malt notes; with good strength. Taste of lightly tart lemon, lime, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white grape, fruit skin, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, corn, and white bread; with light oak, pepper, Lacto/Brett funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, fruit tang, and yeast spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white grape, fruit skin, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, corn, white bread, pepper, light funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, grapes, and light-moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/spiciness balance, and zero puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Moderate increasing dryness from tart/spiciness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth and moderately bready/grainy/acidic/tangy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 3%. Overall this a very nice fruited Berliner weisse. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, grapes, and light-moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink with the modestly acidic/spicy/drying finish, never overly lactic. Very flavorful and never watery for the ABV. Kind of unique with the added Riesling grapes, but it doesn't overpower the Lacto profile. Solid pale/wheat malt backbone. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

This beer pours a fairly clear, light golden color. Nice carbonation bubbles rising in the glass. The head is white, one finger, frothy, but not long lasting.
The nose is light, slightly tart, fruity.
The taste is like the nose - light, slightly tart, fruity.
Crisp feeling, but actually decent body for the ABV.
Delicious, easy drinking beer. Pleasure to drink it.
