A: Pours a deep gold. The only thing holding back its appearance rating is it's a little light in color for the style and there wasn't much head and the little that was there dissipated rather quickly. Great lacing, though!

S: This one packs a very fruitful, floral aroma. Some citrus notes - grapefruit, I believe. Very bold.

T: Balance is the name of the game with this brew. Very sweet malt profile which counteracts the hops. Not the hoppiest pale ale out there by any stretch of the imagination. You get the sweetness up front which gets finished off with an acute burst of hops on the way down. Not too sweet, not too bitter. BALANCED.

M: Very smooth beer. Leaves a hint of dryness on the back half, but overall very crisp and nicely carbonated.

O: Overall, I was incredibly surprised by this brew. Moon Man is completely unassuming and a phenomenal representation of the style. APAs are my favorite, and this one is at the top of my list. Just a phenomenal beer. A nice malty presence that works nicely with the hops providing perhaps one of the best balanced beers I've ever had. If I lived in Wisconsin I'd be drinking this every day.

12 oz bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada imperial pint.
No date or info.

A - A great white head springs up from a tall pour; the well-retained, clumpy foam eventually leaving a thick ring of lace draped down the glass above the abundantly clear and golden yellow brew.

S - Moon Man's aroma is an incredibly delicious-smelling eye-opener, bursting with tons of floral aromatics followed by a citrus burst containing candied lemon and grapefruit hints. Light mineral water quality punctuates the beer's finish, just behind grainy pale malts with a touch of sweetness; a simple base.

T - Crisp pale malt paves the way for delicate hoppiness to gently take over the taste buds with a floral and citrus combination akin to the aroma. Lemon oil and grapefruit rind don't make much of a fuss, keeping this beer flavorful but incredibly drinkable.

M - On the lighter-bodied side of beer, Moon Man has a carbonation tickle without being overdone which allows the smooth beer to glide down easily, finishing off with a touch of hoppy dryness and just a hint of lingering bitterness for balance.

O - In a time when it seems everyone is coming out with a new session IPA, New Glarus' Moon Man, which seems like one of the originals looking back, (albeit a tad less hoppy) stands tall. Amazingly crushable, this crisp and delightfully - and delicately - hoppy beer continues to quench thirst and desire for full-flavored beer pint after pint.

Serving: Bottle into pint
Served: 28 June 2014

Appearance: Significantly lighter in color than SNPA (my standard of comparison). This one is golden yellow with no hints of brown or amber. Pours with a beautiful one and a half finger head that leaves considerable lacing.

Smell: Clean and hoppy, with notes of pine and citrus. Slight malt sweetness, but not much.

Taste: A marvelously balanced APA. The malt backbone here is considerably lighter than other APAs I've had, and to great effect. The beer is lightened just a tad by this and, as a result, isn't nearly as sticky sweet as some darker APAs can be. The malts carry the hops, which add decent, but not over-the-top, citrus and pine flavors. A hint of hop spice and bitterness as well.

Mouthfeel: Lively carbonation streaming from the bottom of the glass makes this one sharp and bubbly on the tongue, and adds some nice depth.

Overall: An incredible APA and one I would very highly recommend. On the lighter end of the color and hop spectrum, and to great original effect.
