Notes: Close to Brewmaster Dan Carey’s heart, this Doppelbock’s journey began with Dan’s re-discovery of whole cone Diamant hops grown at his urging in Hallertau, Germany. Over ten years of his personal heritage barley research resulted in Dan choosing this seed propagation of Czech barley kilned as Pilsner Malt here is Wisconsin. He reveled in the challenge of double decoction brewing in his rescued 1962 copper Brewhouse, rehomed to New Glarus in 1997. This strong Bock lagered 10 weeks in the cellar before resting in the bottle 6 months for mature flavor perfection. Every journey begins with a single step.

Taste is dark bread, dark fruit: a plumb flavor that transitions to a raisin spice, toffee, maybe a little brown sugar. sweet but not too sweet. malty, rather smooth. the flavors stick around for a while in the after taste. 4.37/5, a well done beer

Appearance - The beer poured a deep brown color with an off-white head crowning the pour.

Smell - The nose smelled of sweet dark bread, lightly toasted. It was not overly sweet, foreshadowing what was to come.

Taste - The initial taste was sweet dark breads. It was chewy, possessing notes of caramel and dark fruit. Overall, the beer had a big body that flowed into the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - With medium carbonation, the body had viscosity. It costed the mouth and tongue for extended lingering.

Overall - I might call this the best domestic doppelbock. I hope New Glarus continues to make this annually. For the style, it is near perfection.

Clear mahagony, big wads of lace cling to the glass

Very malty and bready in the nose

Rich, bready, malty, caramel, roastedness with long lingering brown sugar sweetness

Mouthfeel surprisingly smooth

Highly drinkable, among my favorites in the style

This beer pours a nice dark brown color. The head is 2 finger and off white, almost tan. The retention is amazing. Does it ever dissipate? A few minutes in and it's starting to dissipate, and it clings to the glass like super glue.
The nose is interesting, and a bit hard to describe for me. I do like it. I think I'm get a roasted malt aroma. Toffee is there. I'm getting a rye bread aroma. Licorice? Very interesting, but I'm not doing justice to it in words here.
Taste - Lots of dark fruit hits me, plum seems to be the flavor. There's a bread, biscuit flavor that is in there. I get toffee, and a hint of caramel. Roasty flavor.
The body is pretty thick and good for the ABV. Somewhat creamy feeling, though, I doubt there's lactose in here.
Interesting beer, and I know I didn't do justice to it in my review, but it's a good beer, and if you're in Wisconsin, I'd recommend getting it.

Poured into dimpled glass seidel. Look is that classic deep brown with a slightly red tinge. Cream colored ring and lace.

Sweet bready nose with a little raisnin.

Taste is sweet smooth maltiness, with a little dark fruit.

Smooth mouth, medium dry.

A very sweet doppelbock, which is great if that's your thing. Overall it does the style justice.

To me, a little sweet for the style, but nonetheless, a really good beer. Kind of a fun and funky label. The beer checks all of the boxes that you would expect. Toasty malt and very smooth.
