R&D Bourbon Barrel StoutR&D Bourbon Barrel Stout
Notes: A strong sweet stout made with a blend of Wisconsin, German, and English malts with northern brewery hops. Aged in freshly dumped bourbon barrels. Steeped on cocoa nibs, whole vanilla beans, and coffee beans.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown body with a smallish, beige head that is somewhat short-lived.

Smell: Dark malts riding the line between toast and roast with an undercurrent of dark fruitiness. The notes of vanilla, wooden barrel, chocolate and coffee are present but rather muted.

Taste: Dark maltiness with a blended roasty toastiness. Restrained tones tasting of vanilla whipped cream, bittersweet chocolate. Hints at a subdued prune, cassis fruitiness. Lightly warming, woodsy barrel accents, some touches of brown sugar and an additional kick of vanilla. A slight tanginess and small acidic coffee bite nearing the warming, softened finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-light carbonation. Appreciably smooth mouthfeel.

Overall: Enjoyable if discreet in some of its supplementary aspects, though I will always take subdued over oozingly sweet and stinging additive flavorings any day of the week.

New Glarus is still my favorite brewery 17 years after I first visited. This stout is not something they do often and is not their strength. One of my other favorite breweries, also from Wisconsin, Central Waters is the best at this. This reminds me a lot of their bourbon barrel stout, which is a huge compliment. Not getting any coffee or chocolate, but the sweetness from the milk and the bourbon and wood come through and the entire sip is smooth and delicious. Prost!
