This 120z. bottle of Staghorn pours a dark hazy amber orange color. The glass started with a finger of off white foam that slowly settled to about an eighth inch, leaving behind some nice lacing on the glass. The carbonation I would say is medium.
The aroma is the typical malt, fresh bread, biscuit smell.
This beer is very smooth, with the bread notes for starters, followed by the sweetness, with just a hint of the spice on the finish to take care or tame the sweetness.
I would call this a creamy feel, with a slightly dry finish.
This beer tastes too good, so smooth, and at 6.25 ABV could get you in trouble if you don't pace yourself!. Another excellent New Glarus product!

Huge thanks to Joe for this one.

Right out of the can, it's obvious that this is special. It cascades into what becomes a gorgeous glowing body of amber, with a proudly displayed off white foam resting on top. The clarity is brilliant, the foam coarse then smooth once settled. A thin blanket remains shimmering, along with a ring around the perimeter with spots nestled here and there. Just about exactly what I want an Octoberfest beer to look like. (4.5)

The aroma is again what I'd hoped for. Simple yet masterful. Bready with only touches of spice and caramel. A few peels of apple skin and that wonderfully clean and unmistakable German lager yeast. (4.0)

Typically, the aroma can tell you what to expect in the flavor. This does just that, but on a magnified level. The initial breadiness is toasty and sweet. Golden raisins take on more of what I thought would be caramel, but not before being tossed in a bowl of cinnamon, to be just lightly dusted. Not a spicy finish as I was expecting, but very much so on a level of a field of dried wildflowers. (4.25)

The barely over light body, soft carbonation, and smooth balance make this dangerously drinkable. Just a tad on the sweet side, but the dry finish and mild floral contributions allow for it to mostly go unnoticed. (4.0)

This is a real pleasure to drink. I'd gladly take this in 12 packs all season long. I'd have to considering how quickly this one is going down. Every element you'd like to have in a classic Octoberfest is well represented here. (4.25)

Drinking this one out of a very large tasting glass from Goose Island. I only bought this exclusively to cook brats in, but decided to ciphon some for tryin'. Full disclosure, I tend to dislike lagers, and have not found a marzen that I like not made by Paulaner. On to the review

Appearance: a light translucent amber color, more yellow with a hint of brown than red. The beer has no head other than the fizzy carbonation.

Smell: Has a sweet corn and bread smell that reminds me of miller lite. Vague spices also seem to float around in the aroma too.

Taste: A diluted malt-and-spice flavor that has way too much "corn" and "grain" taste. There is a very faint finish.

Mouthfeel: a low bodied, watery beer with fizzy carbonation. Very clean, crisp and refreshing

Overall: This beer is very drinkable, but it's hard to distinguish this as anything other than a slightly spicer, more expensive miller lite. Again, I do not like the style, but even for a Marzen this one fell flat for me. It DOES make a great brat marinade, however.

12 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard New Glarus label art and an iconic green/gold branded pry-off pressure cap acquired in a trade with the very gracious Duff27 (thanks again, buddy!) and served into Cantillon stemware in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the brewery, which makes some beers I adore. I have huge respect for New Glarus and think they may be the only brewery in this country consistently churning out unique beers. Reviewed as an Oktoberfestbier because it clearly identifies as one in the name and on the label.

Served cold - straight from the freezer. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: No bubble show forms as I pour.

Pours a half finger wide head of white colour, okay thickness, and okay creaminess. Retention is horrible - about 15 seconds. No lacing as the "head" recedes.

Body colour is a clear rich copper - right on the money for the style. Transparent, translucent, and of above average vibrance. No yeast particles are visible.

Overall, it looks pretty standard for a festbier/marzen. I'm looking forward to trying it. Not unique or special, but there are no obvious flaws.

Sm: Clean Munich malts, barley, light graininess, light bready malts, and complementary floral hops. Clean Bavarian yeast. A kiss of green apple. Just a hint of apple cider vinegar. Light caramalt with an accompanying sweetness.

No alcohol is detectable.

Overall, it's a pleasant aroma of mild strength and hits the style quite well for an American offering. I'm looking forward to trying it.

T: Caramalt sweetness, green apple, light clean graininess (and some vague cereals), Munich malts, clean barley, and floral hops (with a minimal presence). Comes down on the sweeter side, but is far from overly sweet or cloying. It's very cleanly fermented, a testament to the Bavarian yeast employed. Some amber malts. Perhaps light honey. It's nicely balanced, if simple. Cohesive, but not gestalt. Could use more complexity and subtlety, but then so could most beers.

Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour for the style.

No alcohol comes through.

Do I like it? Sure. But it's not an exemplary festbier.

Mf: Smooth, wet, lightly thick. Unrefreshing. A biteen overcarbonated, actually - did they not bottle-condition this? Crisp. Approachable presence on the palate; not overbearing or anything. Decent body. Suits the flavour profile generally well, but doesn't seem custom-tailored to it.

Not oily, harsh, astringent, rough, boozy, or hot.

Dr: I hoped for more from New Glarus, but at the end of the day this is a fairly pedestrian festbier. It doesn't set itself apart from your run-of-the-mill German festbiers, and I see no need to get it again. Certainly not New Glarus' strongest work, but above average for the style I suppose. I wouldn't recommend it to friends, but you could do worse for a seasonal. It's certainly drinkable; I'll have little trouble killing this bottle.

Bends a bit sweet for a beer in a style meant to be quaffed by the litre. Crisp and medium-bodied.

Smooth, wet, a biteen bready.

Think I waited to long on this beer. Pours a bright clear reddish orange malt with a small beige head. Smell is sticky, stale, gooey malt with band aid qualities and metal. Probably not as it was intended. Unappealing malt flavor and metal as well.

From a single into a nonic (and tasted side-by-side with a Spaten Ofest)
a: pours a beautiful bright reddish copper/mahogany with a 2 finger off white head that subsides into a little crown and leaves a minimal amount of lacing
s: whole wheat crackers, a little caramel sweetness but not too much, faint sweet earthy spiciness...the nose is a little faint but what you get is just right
t & m: everything harmonizes beautifully. Light bready malts, very faint caramel, wonderful earthy flavors...I don't get much in the way of fruity esters...though after it sits awhile, I start to get a little more fruit and even some sweetish pumpkin). I don't get a lot in the way of noble hops, though there is a little and the malts are definitely balanced out...very smooth throughout, with a medium and very satisfying body... maybe on the high side for carbonation...it isn't quite as crisp on the end as is ideal for me, but it does dry out nicely. all in all, this is just really well made and a pleasure to drink.

As compared with the Spaten, it is less grainy and bready, but brighter...and it just sings a little more. Not like it is in doubt, but NG is legit.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Guinness pint glass (dammit, no stein in my house).

I first had this beer 2 years ago and it was horrible: it tasted and smelled like heavy garlic. Today I decided to give it another shot on the assumption that I got bottles from a bad batch.

A- Brown tangerine with golden highlights, lots of head.

S- Spicy with lots of bread notes.

T- Sweet, spicy, cereal, little bit of hops, nice slight caramel malt. Waaay better than last time and supports my "bad batch" theory.

M- Medium, coats the tongue a bit. Not too much carbonation bite.

D- I'd drink this all night and just may.

Very decent and I'm very glad I gave this another shot.

A- Dark amber with a one and a half finger head. Good Oktoberfest color.

S- Faint smell of malts, grains, and hay. Nothing really stands out. Typical Oktoberfest smell.

T- Lots of hops and grains that stand out. Nothing too great or high in flavor.

M- Really smooth. Initially when it hits your mouth, the grains stand out and the hops follow.

D- Very easy to drink. I could drink two to three easily in a sitting, maybe more.

Overall, despite not liking the Oktoberfest style, this is the best one I have had.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass
This years's 09 is even better than last years.

Look a golden amber body with a big white head that sticks around until the end.

Smell sweet malt and maybe a hint of roast.

Taste pretty much malts, sweet and a toasted taste there is some hop bitterness that balances the flavors very well.

Feel real good carbonation and a smooth creamy body

Drink this is a very drinkable beer all flavors are balanced and it goes down smooth.

Comment I really like this one a lot. It has a pretty complex taste, but not too much flavor that over whelms. Just right for drinking one or having more than a few.
