As with many American brewed "triples" this beast is syrup, an orange barley wine. Butter coated maple scone bubble gum oozes down your throat like a shot of honey. The hop balance is completely subdued by the sugary malted milk thickness of the fluid. Not to say that it tastes bad, but you certainly have expectations about a new beer based on it's label and I thought I would see more than two tiny bubbles rising through this gelatin. This batch should have been freeze reduced and sold as a dessert beer, eis-triple or something.

Appearance: a pale golden pour with a disappointing head.i think Triple and i think Belgian style with an enormous frothy head....not here though. almost no head at all.

Smell: either i have a cold or the nose on this beer is absent. i can pick up some very light fruity/floral notes but little else. there seems to be a bready quality to it as well.

Taste/Mouthfeel: wow, nothing like the nose at all! the flavour here is big and upfront. sweet candy like suagrs. a little bit of caramel and some big malts with some balls. a failry lively mouthfeel, medium bodied overall. somewhat bitter on the finish.

Drinkability: a little too sweet overall. could use a little more complexity. as it stands, a fairly one dimensional beer, but not bad.

Thanks to lucybeerbook for the sample. 12 oz twist off bottle with red foil on top ... no freshness date.

A- Fizzy ring of white lace, mildly hazed dark golden hue.

S- Juicy fruity aroma, suggestions of tropical fruit and sugar with a faintness of caramel candy. Spicy alcohol in the nose.

T- Fruity punch upfront, suggestion of mint with a hot estery alcohol. Bready malt with a mild sweetness that likens honey. A little syrupy. Peppery alcohol middle to end, very warming.

M- Slick, medium bodied. Small crispness.

D- Too flamboyant from a tripel, great to taste but one bottle is enough.

The New Glarus Unplugged Triple pours lazily into the SN tulip a bright golden amber color with a puny ring of white bubbly head around the top of the brew. It almost looked flat when I poured it out of the bottle..can't say I'm happy about that. Aromas of rank apple juice that has been left in the fridge far too long, watered down grains and only the faintest hint of some spice. Bland, boring, awful. Triple the dissapointment, that's about it.

First sip brings a muddled, sickly sweet mess. Old, rank apple juice shows up again and actually lingers on the palate. Incredibly cloying sweet pale grainy maltiness flows throughout the length of each sip. There's an underlying peppery spice that just doesn't work well with the flavor profile in this case. Fruity, dry, oily and way too sweet. I don't think I'll be able to finish this one.

Mouthfeel is quite light and syrupy. Feels like diluted corn syrup with a hint of carbonation. This is honestly nothing close to what a tripel should be. A huge dissapointment that is nearly undrinkable. I'll be staying away....far far away.

Pours like apple juice, looks like apple juice, head was like that on apple juice...which is none...dunno what to say about the appearance...

Tart apple and some white grapes come through in the aroma. A touch of alcohol as well. A bit of light spice in the taste, coriander(?), but not very sharp as with most Tripels. The rest of the flavor is a muttled together mix of white grapes and straw flavors, not very appealing. This has a little too much "dark" malty flavor for the style. This is not like any Triple I've ever had.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and feels full on the tongue. I expect a thinner, dryer mouthfeel with my Triples. Drinkability really suffers from the flavor which really puts me off to this beer. Its only saving grace is that it doesn't show any of its abv, but I'd rather have some good flavors.

Pours a nice golden hue with attractive lacing. Had a trace of alcohol present in the aroma mixed with fruits. Taste is sweet and fruity, very enjoyable. To me this was very drinkable. I purchased this at the brewery as part of a sampler 4 pack. I really regret that I only bought one bottle, as when I returned it was all gone. I really would have enjoyed having more of this to cellar and see how it does with age. If you can find a bottle I recommend it.

Clear light amber in color with some caramel highlights. Miniscule, wispy-thin layer of off-white head at the edges. Sparse lacing. Aromas are really sweet, with a candied-apple character. There's also a grainy-corn influence that darts in and out. Flavor really is like an apple dipped in cotton candy. Other fruity esters hide behind the big apple. Finally, there's a peppery spice-hoppiness at the end that starts to counterbalance the apples. Almost to the point of syrupy mouthfeel at times. Medium body with lacking carbonation. Interestingly, the ABV is cloaked in this one. Very tough to see this as a 10% ABV. Overall, it's certainly intersting, but not one I'd desire to try again. I would be curious to see what a year or two does to it.

Slightly hazed golden color. Well filtered- almost no sediment in the bottle. Big, puffed white head fades quickly to an edging, then to nothing.
Honey sweet nose with pepper, clove and mango juiciness.
Taste begins with soft, ripe fruit. Pears and apricots primarily, but a whole host of tropical juices can be identified in the background. Turns simultaniously sugary and spicy. Notes of the promised cloves and black pepper. Spice fades and raw honey dominates. Shifts in a floral direction towards the finish, but hops never really take control and it ends damp and sticky.
Heavy bodied stuff, yet deceptive up front. Easy drinking for a while, but the sweetness begins to catch up and becomes cloying.
Overall, this is a beauty considering it was just released today (5/15), there is a lot of potential for this to mellow into a gem.

Decided to age a few local, American takes on Belgian tripels and dubbels, see how they held up. This followed Sprecher's Triple and preceded Goose Island's Pere Jacques. Aged a little less than a year from the date of purchase.

Pours a reddish orange with a scant and immediately fleeting coating of off-white bubbles. Nose is slightly yeasty, candi sugar and tropical fruits with a tinge of ethyl alcohol. Taste is bright and fruity, but a little overpowered by caramel malt and lacking of the dry finish and yeasty presence I like in a good Belgian. Mouthfeel is a little syrupy, yet lively with carbonation. A lackluster attempt at a formidable Belgian style. I was hoping for more, but this lacked refinement. Glad to see New Glarus experimenting though, keep it up, Dan and Deb..

taste: apples, pears, extremely sweet, probably too sweet. Bottle reccommends aging and I can taste why.

mouthfeel: smooth, sweet, medium/heavy

drinkability: considering its sweetness, surprising drinkable, more so than the unplugged imperial IPA from New Glarus

Clear, gold in hue, at face value the color is dull and quite troubling for a Tripel. However, if I play with it in the light then shades of orange, bronze, and copper emerge; this livens things up. There isn’t much animation in the liquid. Also there isn’t much of a haze either. The head was retarded, at the apex the foam was only a half finger in height, way to small for the style and the white bubbles quickly fizzed away to a thin, soapy cap that has naked spots in the middle. There was no subsequent lacing. I’m disappointed. On the whole, this beer doesn’t have much going for it visually. The nose further alarms me. The potency is painfully low, plus whatever it is saying is very, very muddled. All I can detect are hints of honey, biscuits, and wildflowers. I get the impression there is something more but it fails to show itself. I’m disappointed yet again. The palate is tasty but, by no means, is this beer a great Tripel. I would call it solid but uneventful. Upfront is warm sweetness with a spicy underbelly; in the middle it morphs into a sweet, malty beer with the honey starting to shine more. At the finish a pleasant warmth propels the taste in the sense that it brightens up my tastebuds and they are more receptive to taste the light herbal hops. With that said, the finish is still sweet. This beer reminds me a lot of Thunderhead’s Grand Cru (yes, I’m comparing this to a beer from a small brewpub in Nebraska and very few if any people will know what I’m talking about); interestingly the Grand Cru doesn’t use Belgian yeast (nor Ale yeast). This Tripel from New Glarus doesn’t have a hell of a lot of Belgian yeast qualities either. Both beers have a similar base but I liked the Grand Cru more because of built it complexities that this beer just doesn’t have. What I’m trying to say is this: The alcohol is felt in the belly but not so much on the tongue however this beer is way too sweet with very little secondary flavors to keep my attention. Bitterness is low. So is the complexity. With the high abv and easy of consumption this beer is like a Malt Liquor. Yes, I realize what I just said. A couple of these beers and you’ll get a buzz but your tastebuds won’t be stimulated. If I don’t compare this beer to a style I *like* what I taste. Like. Not love. It is better than average. What a rambling description! Medium in body, the carbonation is a bit low and too low for a Tripel. The mouthfeel is ordinary but it could use more body and more effervescence. This beer is too easy to drink. There aren’t enough flavors to make me slowdown and take notice. A beer this big should force the drinker to sip and savor. This beer failed to do that. Still, there needs to be some praise for a beer like this to be so agreeable. In a sense I am rewarding this beer by “praising” its drinkability when, in reality, this praise is a knock against the taste. Would I drink this beer again? Yes. It is good but it is not a good Tripel. I purchased this 12-ounce bottle in Milwaukee, WI for $3.00.

Dark golden-honey colour. Little to no head.

Smeel is sweet, fruity, and a bit floral. Just a suggestion of hop in the background. Unfortunately, it's not a strong smell at all.

Flavour is pungent sweet....with overtones of black licorice and orange. There's some floral hop sice under.

Mouthfeel is nice- the carbonation stays back just until the swallow, but it never really gets overbearing.

Not bad- but maybe a bit much for a sessioner. That's where it gets a point off on drinkability.

This beer was purchased three years ago and stored in very good conditions.

Poured a hazy light brown with no head.

Smell has a nice nutty maltyness with a notieable yeastyness.

Has a light woodyness to it with a sweet apple taste. Very mellow and smooth with a bit of nuttiness as well. A bit of brandy like alcohol also makes an appearance.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a good dry finish.

Very drinkable, smooth and complex. This beer has aged very well. I just wish I had more.

Bottle: Poured a flat light golden colored beer with literally no head and almost no carbonation. Aroma is quite sweet, almost like pure candi sugar, which is not my cup of tea. Taste was very very sweet, again pure candi sugar sweet with no spices that could be really identified. Wow, I cannot even taste any yeast because of all the sugar. I’m now left wondering if this was a bad bottle or just not my type of tripel.

Pours a gold and copper color with no real head retention but manages to leave small droplets of lace on the glass.
Aroma of pale malts, grain, candi sugar, citrus and a light spiced yeast note.
Flavors of sweet sugar, some sweet honey with a little bubblegum and a touch of coriander.
Mouthfeel is very sweet that is cut by some husky grain feel somewhat but sweetness really continues to the end. There is no real spiciness as would be typical to style but pleasant enough.
Drinkability is decent for the overall amount of sweetness beer puts forth but the overall flavor is really good. Wish it had some moe the classic Belgian spicy yeastiness to it and it would be outstanding. I guess I'd call it 2/3 of a great Tripel.

Picked this one up in a trade a while back and had it sitting in my fridge, but never got around to trying it. Well I happened to get another one a couple weeks ago and took that as a sign to try this first one :) Served at cellar temperature in a Chimay goblet. This one was consumed on 09/10/2008.

the pour was wonderful. Deep, russet tinted orange amber. A rcih looking haze and cloudiness consumed this one and quickly let me know I was going to be in for a treat for sure. Some light carbonation could be seen streaming up from the bottom of the glass. A good sized head, maybe an inch in heightformed on the initial pour and this literally went nowhere, sticking around until the very bitter end.

the aroma was unlike anything i had seen before in a quad. Huge notes here of spices, allspice maybe with lots of dark fruits and a simple, but well defined bitter touch. As it warmed some vanilla nad molasses it seemed started to come forward. Really quite nice. The flavor, wow, not even sure where to go on this one here. Rich, decadent, and definitly unusual. There was a nice touch of banana and clove that were mixed around inside. Nice earthy yeast profile, with a good hint of prunes or figs mixed in. The deep spice coming through now pinching off the fruit taste and giving it quite the unique punch, this was very, very good. Medium to almost full bodied feel with great carbonation and really just a solid expierence no matter how you look at it. I could have sipped on this one for days without ever getting bored of it and in fact this made one hell of a nightcap for me.

Overall I have to say I was more the pleasantly suprised by this one, in fact I was damn near blown away. It was just rediculously good and really just a great example of what these guys can do to a style we see all too much of lately. Go out and get this one as it is more then worth it!

appearance: I like the tan labels and the red foil on this installment of the Unplugged series. A moderately aggressive pour creates a surprisingly thin, white head. The beer is an orangeish gold color.

smell: A honey like sweetness is immediately evident, very similar to a mead. A very sticky smelling sweetness. Some slight hop spiciniess and an even lower alcohol sting is noticeable. Some fruits are there, namely red apples and overripe pear. I hate to draw comparisons beers, but this reminds of Midas Touch.

mouthfeel: The carbonation is medium low. The body is on the lower end of the heavy spectrum, with a smooth and creamy slickness to it.

taste: Again, the mead like, sticky sweetness is here. And again, thoughts of Midas Touch come to mind. Plenty of light fruits. Alcohol is readily evident, but is not detractively so. Not really to style for a tripel, but a good beer anyway.

drinkability: A couple of these is enough.

Pours with some head, but then that dissapates into nothing. Carbonation is apparent, color is dark golden brown. Smell is brown sugar, some apple, and some belgian candy sugar. Taste is fruity with some sweetness. Warms the chest. Almost some cinnamin in the nose. Mouthfeel is good and smooth, almost syrupy. Overall pretty nice.

Hard pour reveals a somewhat lifeless copper liquid that I suspect is far past its prime. Smell is sweet caramel and hot alcohol, not really appealing. The taste is caramel and rock candy, sweet and boring. I hate to review this since it is obviously past prime, but I guess it wasn't exactly raved about when it was fresh either.

12oz bottle obtained via trade with CRJMellor. Thanks for the opportunity...

Poured into a Rapscallion glass, formed a minimal 1/4" white head over the light amber brew. Head quickly fades to an uneven layer of bubbles, with average lacing. Aroma is tart apple coupled with somewhat harsh alcohol. Flavor is lightly fruity sugar water with an alcoholic close. Mouthfeel is sticky on the tongue due to the cloying sweetness, and drinkability is just plain low for the same reason. Big miss on this one, certainly the exception from NG, not the rule here.

This is the third in the series ( I think). The first was the Eisbock, then came the Imperial Stout and third the Triple. It pours very clear with a slight head which subsides into a ring. It smells a little tart and flowery.

The taste is the big deal with this one. It starts nutty and then sweet then tart then sweet. The mouthfeel is silky and it is very drinkable. I'm sure it will improve with age but I have no reason to wait. This is a good one. I picked it up at the brewery. Thanks Dan.

A lightly cloudy golden orange pour with a light head. Swirl the lacy head and it holds the glass a bit almost like a liker Belgian. Flavors of brown sugar, rye smoked-honey, malt with a carbonation that hold up. Beer transforms a bit when warming and the thicker hints of molasses present. Enjoy the creative brew any time and let one sit on the shelf a while.

Just as the sea will eventually give up its dead, I had a revelation recently in my cellar and came across this beer. The label reads "Those born with saintly patience might lay this beer down for a year or more ..." I am not a saint, just Brother Woody of The Order of Disorder, a schlub with too much goldang beer in his basement.

From the bottle: "'Some people paint, some sing, others write ... I brew' - Daniel Carey"; "A few times a year we will cut Dan loose to brew whatever he chooses, uncensored, uncut, unplugged. Always handcrafted, the bottle you hold is brewed for the adventurous soul. I used a very gentle slow pour so as not to disturb any lees that might be in the bottom of the bottle. As a result, I did not create any head, but the lack of carbonation in the beer made me wonder if I would have gotten any with a harder pour. Color was a coppery brown with NE-quality clarity. Nose was full of a molasses/sugary maltiness, kind of medicinal, actually. Mouthfeel was flat and the taste was very heavy with molasses. Finish remained quite sweet, but probably not what Mr. Carey had intended. Oh well. Next!
