Purchased this new arrival rauchbier at my local Glendora BevMo. Presented in a .5L swing-top bottle, I used a large mug as my vessel of choice.
Appearance was clear amber with a large amount of carbonation and a slightly off-white head that billowed briefly before settling in as a thin cap.
Smell: subtle smokey note..beechwood, maybe? Malty and fruity aromas create an added dimension of complexity. Still, a bit too subtle...
Taste: fruity, pear-like flavor which meshes nicely with the modest smokiness. Smoke flavor is nowhere near the intensity of the Aecht Schlenkarla versions. Feel is medium-bodied and a bit creamy.
Overall, pretty drinkable. A decent version of the style; I just wish the smokey aspect of this brew was more pronounced. Still, I wouldn't turn one down if offered.

Had this around the same time as the Spezial Rauch Lager. Both were very similar. Pours clear gold with a short white head. Smoky sweet nose. Sweet taste, kind of a pilsener with a smoky finish. Fair mix of malt and hops. Okay, but if you are claiming to be a smoked beer, BE MORE SMOKEY.

Pours a very pale amber brown with an uneven haze. Forms a small bone white head that doesn't die too quickly. Leaves some stringy lacing.

Initial aroma is of wood smoke with a surprising amount of sweetness. The smoked meat smells that are often associated with this style can be found but they're fairly subdued. Interesting though.

The flavor has even less smoke than the nose somehow. The malt sweetness is still here in the form of apples. Not as much going on here as I hoped. Aftertaste is interesting though, wood smoke and fruit combine for a faint applewood bbq taste.

Mouthfeel is a major weak point, so watery it's more the consistency of tea than beer. Fairly low ABV and unassuming nature of this beer makes it easy to drink but I don't think I'd reach for another bottle as I was getting bored by the end of the first one.

This is my first Rauchbier and while I found the smoke interesting there just wasn't enough. After reading some reviews of others beers in the style I think I chose poorly. I'll have to revisit this style again and make a more thoughtful selection.

-pours a clear golden with a medium, foamy, white head
-medium carbonation visible
-light smoke,metallic,apples,pears
-Follows the nose plus smoked fish and honey
-medium carbonation
-light to medium body
I dont think pale malts lend itself well to smoke. In my opinion it hinders the subtle flavours to come through instead of enhancing the experience.

Clear dark gold to light amber colored beer with a small white head.

Smell is Barbecue smoke and medicine that I have come to expect from all Rauchbiers. Sweet and mildly malty with a bit of grassy hop aroma.

Taste starts out dry and quite woody with a good level of smoke, not so much that it obliterates everything else. Mildly sweet after a bit but this is a quite dry beer. Sweet long lasting smoky aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is on the thin side.

One of the more drinkable Rauchbiers available, tasty and smoky without wiping out your sense of taste.

Light meaty/smoked aroma. Tall, frothy, dirty white head fades briskly as bits of lace are pulled down with it. Deep golden beer holds a few streams of carbonation. A mild malty sweetness forms the base and it holds until late in the game. Toward the finish there is a bit of campfire mixed with spicy hop bite. Mild carbonation mixed with a moderately full body make for a beer that goes down easy. A mild and balanced smoked beer. You don't see many of these.

.5L brown glass swingtop acquired at Hopfen und Malz in Berlin, Germany and served cold into a Berliner Kindle Weisse glass in me friend's gaff in Berlin. Reviewed live. Expectations are high; I generally really like rauchbiere. I'm looking forward to this one. 5.3% ABV per the label. BB: 26.10.14. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: One finger wide. White colour. Decent thickness and creaminess. No lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is average - about 2 minutes.

BODY: Dark copper-gold of average vibrance. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. Translucent. Transparent.

Overall, it's a decent looking rauchbier and I'm looking forward to the first sip, but it's far from unique or special. Appears adequately carbonated.

AROMA: Moderate smokiness. Meat, pork, wood smoke. No ash or harshness. Copper malts. Maybe there's oak?

There's no out-of-control sweetness, hop character, or yeast character. No alcohol or off-notes are detectable.

A pleasant aroma of moderate strength.

TASTE: Woody smoke is prominent - as it should be - with faint wisps of meat/pork. Copper malts. Not real sweet or hoppy. There's no yeast character. I don't find any alcohol or off-notes. Balanced and enjoyable. Pretty simple, but effective. Lacks intricacy, subtlety, and nuance.

Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. I like it.

TEXTURE: It's got a good balance of coarseness/smoothness and dryness/wetness, coaxing out the flavours well. It's not unrefreshing, but it is a rauchbier. That said, it avoids the usual pitfalls of smoked malts; there's no harshness or roughness here. Well-carbonated. Good overall presence on the palate. This texture complements the taste well, but its definitely too thin and lacks sufficient body and heft.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, or scratchy.

OVERALL: This is a nice rauchbier which will please fans of the style. I'd get it again and would recommend it to friends. I'll easily kill the bottle. Definitely worth trying.

Purchased at the Canoga Park BevMo (along with several other Franconian beers I'd never seen before). Enjoyed in a half-liter Becker glass.

Beautiful deep gold-orange color. A tall, rocky beige head collapses eventually into a thick disc of foam, and leaves plenty of sticky lacing on the glass. This beautiful beer is ready to be photographed.

Rich malt with notes of toffee and roasted nuts. Spicy, savory woodsmoke comes in afterwards. There's also a dry fruity character which reminds me of an altbier.

This is quite a subtle beer. There are a number of flavors, but none are very strong, and none dominate. It starts with some malty sweetness followed by a soft caramel flavor. Soon afterwards, the beer dries out significantly. The smoke comes in on top of a rich, dry fruitiness. Those elements make a bittersweet mix with the malt and caramel. There's even a good spike of earthy hop bitterness at the finish. Smoke lingers on the breath.

Mouthfeel is light- to medium-bodied and smooth. Slightly creamy. Carbonation is soft and allows the range of flavors to emerge.

The harmony of flavors is very good. I just wish that those flavors had a bit more intensity. But the mouthfeel is elegant, and the smoke enhances the malty flavors without overwhelming them. There are more flavorful examples of the rauchbier style available, but this one is graceful, nicely balanced, and well made.

This is a nice-looking brew: a beautiful clear copper-gold color with a white head and great lace. The smell has a very light smoke nose. The smoke is not quite as intense as I expected. (Think of it not as standing near a fire, but smelling the smoke on something that had recently been near the fire). There is a little lightly toasted malt underneath the smoke. Not bad. The taste is fairly dry, with a sharpness and starkly character (a little on the acidic side?). Not much in the way of hop notes. The smoke is still present in the taste, but far quieter than it is in the smell. The mouthfeel is very light and somewhat bright. Decently drinkable. Nothing special.

BB 21-02-07. Good appearance with lasting white head and golden-bronze beercollor, nice and bright. Nose is malts in sweetsmoke and not as sharp in the nose as a schenkerla but obviously there. Next to that litle hoppyness. Taste is strong and full bodied; sweet caramellic malts, smoke and good bitterness. Well drinkable beer

A- Pale amber with a moderate sized cream colored head.

A- Smoked meat aroma.

T- Dark malt flavor with a smokey flavor sitting in the background. Very clean tasting.

M- Medium body with moderate carbonation. Very easy going down.

D- I honestly expected a lot more smokiness. As it warmed the smoke came through a bit more. Very enjoyable and to style nonetheless.

A: Golden colour! Expected a dark beer. Clear,
medium fading head, some lacing, didn’t look
overly lively.

S: Subtle smoke as opposed to a
smoke bomb.

T: Basically its a Helles with a hint
of smoked meat, has the malt and grassyness
associated with that particular beer style.

M: Low carbonation, light body, very smooth.

O: Really surprised by the light colour, enjoyable but
slightly below the Schlenkerla Helles.

From the bottle, it pours well with a nice head. Good flavor. Award winning brewery in the depths of Franken! I enjoy the Weiherer products and grab them when I can.

2018 Update: Yum!

Half-liter swing-top bottle from the BevMo in Cypress, on to the beer:

This beer sits in a stange glass hazy pale orange with hues of light brown on the edges. Attractive and puffy bone-white head on top. The aroma is mild and malty. A trace of smoke, but its sweet malt and grass is reminiscent of a pale lager. Same with the taste. Where is the smoke? There's a bit of cured meats in the taste...oh, there it is. More helles lager characterists in the flavor (lemon/grass). Good feel in the mouth.

Not as intense in smoke flavor as I was expecting, but nonetheless could make a nice training wheels rauch for those looking to jump into the style.

Pale, slightly cloudy orange-straw colour, with a white, fluffy head of dissipating filmy bubbles. Looks pretty nice.

Great smoky characters on the nose. Wood smoke, bacon and a little pine-resin giving a woody note. Very nice. It's not huge and robust, but the characters are very good.

Taste, however, is surprisingly weak. A little burnt character, almost a little bit of charred rubber, then just an unpleasant coppery-sour note on the back. Mouthfeel is very flat. On the palate as a whole, it's a real shame.

Overall, it has some pleasant characters, but it's a pretty weak example of a rauch. As much as the initial characters are promising, it just falls flat, and ends up pretty bland.

The beer pours a slightly hazy pale amber. It has a small white head that quickly dissipates, leaving some soapy lacing.

Pears are most prominent in the aroma, and there is a smoky wood scent in the background.

The flavor is surprisingly delicate. Sweet and fruity at first with light smokiness towards the end. There is very little residual bitterness. Pleasant aftertaste of charred wood. By the end of the first beer, I can hardly taste the smokiness.

The mouthfeel is light and undercarbonated. There is a slightly dry finish.

Overall, it is a refreshing brew. The taste was a little too delicate for me. I was pleased at first, but by the end it started tasting like water. Nontheless, it's a beer I would choose when introducing someone to craft brew.

Picked up a 0.5l swing-top bottle of this at a Rewe store last week in Bamberg. Cost me €0.79, plus €0.15 deposit (not to be redeemed!). No freshness dating found on the label.

Enjoyed today out in the 'Zebo. Poured into a standard nonic, it was a clear, medium golden hue, with sporadic, indifferent carbo lazily meandering topside. A bright, white head topped the brew; rocky but rapidly thinning, though with good lace. A fine rauch aroma hits the nostrils, almost Schlenkerla-like in its robustness. Mmmmm... Though the body was a bit less than medium, the liquid itself was still quite smooth on the tongue.

Bready malts and light sweetness were batting lead-off and #2... A solid rauch base come sin next. The smoke lingers quite well, not strong like Schlenkerla, but more than the subtle rauch of Spezial. Has some earthy, flowery hops making a late cameo, but this is a smoke show when all is said and done. A solid rauchbier, indeed!
