This beer poured a brown color with a huge rocky head that quickly began to subside. The aroma is malty with the yeast noticeable. The taste is malty and spicy – possibly even a bit floral. The mouthfeel is medium and the carbonation is quite noticeable. Overall, this is an easy to drink brew – not offensive, but missing a punch.

So far my favorite of the Plank beers. This is a dark brown, murky and rich looking beer. I get some banana and spice in the nose, reminds me--at first and briefly--of the first time I had Rochefort 10. That rich banana and clove (?) up front. Anywho, this one adds some bake caramel and chocolate. Rich taste. Nutmeg is more apparent here and the banana melds into dark chocolate. Sweet roasted malt and spicy end, although somewhat light. Like the other Planks, I'd like to try this one at the brewery

Pours an effervescent amber/caramel with 4 fingers+ of rocky light sand colored head. Superior head retention & lacing

S: Slight bubblegum notes & a little pepper. Also slight booze notes.

T: Fruitty(apricots/dates)/bready with bubblegum & a hint chocolate up front. Slight brown sugar, toffee, & pumpernickel notes as this warms. Finishes bready, peppery & fruitty & quenching for the style

MF: Rich, medium/heavy bodied with perfect carbonation

Drank real easy for the abv, this is a nice weizenbock! The best one from this brewery IMO. I'd pay $5 for this again, easily, wish it was cheaper, though. I like this better than adventius I think. so say my ratings, need to do a side by side comparison!

I had this at Quencher's Saloon in Chicago. $7 for a 500ml brown bottle with no freshness date. Served in a weizenglass.

The beer poured a cloudy dark brown color with half the glass filled with a rocky and creamy tan head that lasted quite awhile. Decent lacing as well.

This smelled like one of those chocolate covered malt ball candies. It was wonderful.

Big malty flavor right up front. Chocolate and caramel sweetness along with some toasted grain flavors. There is also a plum-like fruitiness and tartness to it that blends well with the malts. Bitterness is low but the hops are noticeable. Alcohol is well hidden.

Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. Carbonation is between moderate to medium.

This is an absolutely delicious weizenbock. Hope I can find it at a liquor store so I won't have to pay $7 a bottle to drink it.

Was pleased to see this beer on the shelves after reading the review of it in one of the BA magazines. Pours a light brown, with a rocky head that fades quickly. Smells of sweet berry, honey and alcohol come to mind for the aroma. Taste has elements of cherry, plum, and an overall wine or port presence. Mouthfeel is medium, and quite drinkable. Great example for this style. Tastes even better if you let it warm up a little bit.

Poured from a bottle bought for $2.99 in northern OH (a steal versus $4-5 in MI). The beer is dark copper / burnt orange and clear, with a massive foam comprised of large celled suds. The nose is subdued versus competitive weizenbocks, but has the required bananas and cloves, and a hint of lactose. The taste is large, very rich with bananas and cloves and a little bubblegum, very sweet tasting. The thick body is just right for the style, this is a great beer even if its aroma is modest.

Gorgeous beer, with a glowing copper rust under an enormous fluffy head made of zillions of tiny bubbles. Incredible head retention.

Aroma is banana, apple skins, nougat, light toffee, even lighter milk chocolate.

Flavor is a mixture of both good and bad. The good is the banana, earthy wheat, obvious yeast (nearly Belgian in character) and traces of caramel and toffee. Nearly ruining all that is a sour pucker, as well as a steely, nearly medicinal bite. Like sucking on a penny. Not sure what's going on there, but it's not easy to get down. I bought this at a reputable store (City Beverage, W-S, NC), never found other beers there to be old, expired, light-stricken or otherwise unacceptable. Maybe this one is indeed old, or maybe I just don't care for it. And the mouthfeel is a little too sharp and over-carbonated for the style.

So off balance. Glad I have a second bottle...will revise the review if that one performs significantly better. I can tell there's a great beer in here, but as of right now, I've had many better Weizenbocks. C'est la vie.

I didn't swirl the yeast in this example. This may be considered untraditional to some, but I wanted to taste the beer, not the yeast.

Appearance: Initially the beer poured a very clear reddish brown color with a huge 4" head of tan bubbles. I poured the beer really carefully over a period of about a minute to get this much head.

Aroma: My initial impression was of clove and a tad of banana...which I didn't get in the Helles version of this beer. (Note - Something set my allergies off after I opened this beer, so the rest of my review may be skewed) As the beer settles, through about a half-inch of foam, I can pick up some sweet dark caramel malts and a bit of melanoidins. The banana esters fade soon after the pour and leave a malty aroma profile. As the beer warms up some, there is a little bit of oxidation becoming noticeable.

Taste: The flavor is clean and malty with the balance tipped firmly toward the malt. I get a little bit of bitterness on the back of the throat that I am pretty sure is from hops and not roast grains. The roast grains are reserved and let the toastiness shine through. There is a bit of alcoholic warming on the back of the throat long after the sip...but it takes that long to set in. If you sip too quickly, you don't notice the warming until it has reached your head.

Opinion: Well, I was pretty impressed with the Helles version of this beer without the yeast, but I almost think that this one should have the yeast swirled into it. Don't expect Aventinus with this beer, or you will be disappointed. This beer is really clean with the Weizen yeast character stepping in just enough to accentuate the beer...not run it. I actually like this trait in a Weizen beer as the really estery yeasts turn me off. This one is really clean and drinkable.

A dark brown, burgundy beer with a nice lacing head.

Smell is akward, with a vegetable / DMS smell and some stock. Hidden behind this is a clean smelling beer with low levels of dark malts, which add a strong malty base complemented by dark breadcrust and umami.

Taste is in line with the smell with the green, vegetable taste. The base is formed by a very malty munich malt, which gives the beer a dark taste, like bready and caramel, but without any of the roast. The beer is not bitter and has a firm body which is somewhat sweet, but not overly so. The high ratings made me expect more. This tastes like an off-batch. Too bad.

500ml bottle served in a weizen glass. Tons of carbonation, massive head. I had to wait for it to settle to fill the glass. Poured a dark amber. Pretty restrained aroma of clove and some malt. I got a slightly metallic note that wasn't pleasant. Medium bodied with a decent malt backbone. A bit of spice in the finish. I was pretty disappointed with this. I'm a big bock fan, and I was really looking forward to trying this. It just seemed very bland.

This is a very nice dark weizenbock beer. I first had this at the German Beer Festival in Boston and thought I would never find it again, but it is available at Elm St. Liquors in Davis Square. Another feather in their cap for what to me is the best beer store in Boston area. The beer pours cloudy, dark, not much head, and what there is is a bit on the soapy side. No lacing to speak of. The beer is moderately carbonated, medium bodied, and the smell is malt, yeast, and cooked prunes. The taste is the high point by far. There is a somewhat dryish, for a weizenbock, malty, and bready taste. The beer is amply full of yeast, and there is a prunish taste in the mid section that tails off in the finish. Some refer to this as banana, but I believe its more a full yeast flavor that is pushing things in the banana-ish direction. This is a very nice weizenbock that isn't too sweet, does not have an overly syrupy feel, and one in which the 7.5% ABV is well masked. Worth seeking out, if you can find it. L'Chaim.

a: dark brown, slightly hazy, trickles of carbonation upon deeper view, thick foamy head settles to finger thickness, good lacing
s: nice slightly sweet wheat aroma with bits of banana bread
t: moderate malts upfront, followed by plum flavor and finishing with a tart fruitiness
m: lots of carbonation but almost a light body, which was a disappointment
d: misleading until i re-read the label - bavarian dunkler weizenbock. not nearly as smooth as it smelled and tartness made it less drinkable than anticipated. not the best representation of a weizenbock, but smell was weizenbock-like while the taste was too dunkler -like. overall a good beer, just doesn't rank with aventinus or some other weizenbocks i've had if you want to compare it to "straight" weizenbocks.

A moderate pour produces a fairly voluminous head. Very active carbonation supports a continually renewing head of very light tan/dirty-white foam. Beer itself is very dark amber/mahogany in color, practically black without light shining through it. Lacing is more spotty than sheets, but still very respectable.

Scents of fresh-baked dark bread, raisins, mild chocolate, malt sweetness, and slight ethanol. Not much detectable in terms of characteristic weissbier phenolics or esters, perhaps hidden by other entities here?

The taste is full, nearly huge, opening with sweetness from wheat and barley malt, then transitioning to dark/heavy fruit flavors like baked/stewed prunes or very syrupy figs. Some chocolate roastiness. Behind all this are phenols coming across as clove and nutmeg. Greater levels of ethanol are apparent, too, as slight alcohol undertones are present below all this typical weissbier flavor, lending it a sort of darkness and depth. Aftertaste is of toasted bread, yeast.

Mouthfeel is a bit harsh due to the excessive carbonation in this beer, which causes that "carbonation burn." Fortunately, this mellows over time, but it is not initially pleasant. Fairly heavy-bodied. Finish is dry.

A quality weizenbock, stronger in flavor, but not sharper, than other versions of the style. Would check out again, definitely.

Thanks to jcwattsrugger for this one!

Pours ruby brown with a thick off-white head that thins and stays. Trailing lace slides down the glass.

The smell is of dark, sourish fruit - prune, date, raisin - with some cocoa/chocolate, caramel, wheat tang, and a pumpernickel-ish breadiness.

The taste is of dark and tart cherry-like fruitiness. Malty with some iron/minerals and caramel/toffee. It has a mild, but solid hop presence in the back. It is sweet and sour with a bitterish touch in the finish. Nice balance and subtle complexities.

It is medium-to-full-bodied with a bit of prickly carbonation (though not in a distracting or fizzy way).

Alcohol is reasonably well-covered, though it adds just the right amount of warmth for the style. This is a delicious weizenbock with nice balance - sweet, sour, then bitterness mixing in.

Beer brought to beerclub by kkulacki, who keeps finding these Planks all over Michigan. Pours crimson/mahogany with a massive white head. looks very nice. Smells of black fruits, bananas, rum, malt and caramel. Taste is sweet, caramel malt with noticeable alcohol and a pruney-banana blend. Slightly yeasty. Banana flavor not overwhelming as it can be in some beers of the style. Very nice. Smooth, almost velvety. A very nice drinker. Wish we had it locally.

A - Poured out a semi-opaque, burgundy color with a foamy, tan, three-finger head. It left thin, sticky rings of lace.

S - It smelled of wheat, roasted malt and hints of cocoa.

T - It really had a great balance of roasted malt and wheat. Nice grassy flavors.

M - It was crisp and smooth with a dry finish. A medium-bodied weizenbock.

D - This is a really good brew. Great balance between wheat and malt!

A- Wow, this was a foamer. A cloudy brown beer with a head that settles down to a 1 cm off white head that looks fairy weak. Pretty bland.

S- Just a hint of apple juice... and that is all I can get out of this.

T- Just hints of brown sugar and apple juice. There is a slight alcohol presence that is apparent only by the numbness. Not bad, but incredibly boring.

M- Overcarbonated and numbing.

D- Well, this was a disappointment. I can't think of another beer that is this boring, especially with the alcohol content this has.
