Had this first on tap at the brewery and again in a 22oz bottle.

Appearance is slightly hazy reddish brown with a fluffy tan head and no lace.

Scent is bubble gum, bananas and cloves, wheat and spice.

Flavor is bubblegum, tangy wheat / yeast notes, very subtle sweetness of maple syrup. Bananas and light spices (cloves primarily). Impressive long finish allows the various different flavors to develop. Raisins and a light rum note. A touch of lemon and toward the end.

Mouth is creamy with a very light carbonation.

Drink is decent but I don't think I'd want more than 2 of these.

This is a well crafted, nicely balanced and wonderfully executed ale - typical of Portsmouth quality. Lots going on here. The maple syrup is a great idea and is very subtle. I might not have known it was even there had I not read about it on Portsmouth's website. None of the various flavors or spices dominate and each has a chance to express itself. However I have to admit the apparent bubblegum note really threw me off. I initially did not like this beer because of that. After trying it again I still notice a bubblegum flavor but don't seem to mind it. Incidentally, letting this beer warm a little really helps it to open up.

Whew! This was some tough sledding. Had this in a tulip glass at the Brewery. Very pretty:dark brown, thick head, very sticky. It had a sweet, fruity aroma, and was fairly malty. The taste was sweet, but not overly so. It tasted like honey or maple syrup, with a faint banana flavor. This is a pretty substantial beer. I had two, and had had my fill.

One of a few bombers purchased at the brewery....
Pours a rust color, mostly clear with a half finger of white head...little lacing that goes bye-bye after a short while.
Aroma is very inviting...candied sugar, cherries, a hint of peat.
Taste is just as enjoyable...semi-sweet with an excellent roasty quality to balance out the fruity/estery quality. The alcohol is completely hidden in the flavor, but the feeling is quite warming as I finish off the bomber.
Clean finish with the perfect amount of carbonation to make this one of the most drinkable brews I have had to date.
Just a pleasure to consume.

Pours a deep dark mahogany with a medium sized tan head. The head is alittle small and leaves almost no lacing,but the color is very good. The smell is strong with raisins and other dark fruit,roasted malt,and alcohol. The taste is strong with dark fruit,roasted malt,alcohol,candy sugar,and cloves. The m/f is medium with all the flavors mixing very well. This tastes like it has more alcohol in it than it does. A very good beer,not my favorite style,but this is damn good.

So I am in New Hampshire for the Great Bay Half Marathon...its the night before a race and ....why not drink some....ok....alot of the local beer!!! The Weizenbock from Portsmouth is ok...not a bock fan. This beer has was a amber in color with thin white head and great lace. The smell has a subtle malt and bitter nose. This beer was grainy and malty in taste! The smell funnels into the taste of this beer. The light ABV leads to this beer being a being a potential Session...certainly worth a taste.

22 oz bottle into a couple of pint glasses.

Pours a deep clear copper, topped with a finger of off-white head. This retains with a thin fizziness that leaves back some light spotty froth. The aroma smells of toasted bread and sweet notes of sugars and ripened fruit. A touch of spice sits in the background.

The taste is thick and tangy on the palate, with notes of bread, caramel, and then more fruity and estery flavors of orange and banana. Hops give this an earthy bitterness that stretches into a mostly dry and spicy finish. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied here, with a lively crispness to the carbonation, which is then layered on top of some underlying alcohol warmth.

This was decent for a Weizenbock but ultimately just came off as a little too thick and chewy at times. I’m glad that I had someone to split the bottle with.

Poured a dark brown with red highlights that left a thick tan head. The smell is fruit, figs, plums, rich dark fruits are ever present. The taste mirrors the nose, sweet malty floural hop presence. Figs, candided fruit, plums follow the earthy texture. The finish has a alcohal presence but is very warming and nicely balanced with an acidic feel to balance out the sweetness on the palate.

Pours a dark dark amber color with a good amount of light tan head, fades at a decent rate but doesn't leave much lacing on the glass.

The smell is a beautiful concoction of banana and clove, some candied sugar and malt.

Taste is rather sharp at first and astringent but then a creaminess comes over with a slight banana and clove presence riding along, strength seems a little more evident than it should be at the ABV.

This beer poured a dark amber with a nice white head. It had a mild aroma of roast malt along with some scents associated with a weiss beer (mild cloves and banana. There is more malt in this beer, so that brings dates and figs into the mix. Now the taste… Wow, very boozy with sweet figs and dates. Very smooth almost creamy mouth feel medium drinakbility due to the alcohol.

Went to a place I don't get to enough...the Portsmouth Brewery...with the Beautiful Bride and Jr. for lunch. Picked up a couple bottles of this deal on the way out. Time to crack this one and pour into my Portsmouth snifter...

Pours a thick finger of soapy, root beer-ish head. Heavy bubbling, light lacing at first. Retention isn't significant on first pour. Pretty much 3-way split between root beer, iced coffee and espresso body.

Wow - it's meaty yet subtle. There are banana esters...but it smells like true bananas...along with a little nut bread. Hell, this isn't that Banana Nut Bread stuff, is it? Of course not. Spicing is faint of clove and ginger but this natural ripe banana texture is extremely soothing along with spicy, lightly roasted yet dark...maybe braised? natural caramelizing malt. Hoppiness is negligible save for a dash of pine. With warmth over a couple of hours the dark fruits...figs, dates and the like...with a leathery texture...emerge. Clutch.

It has the tannins and texture of a true banana. This is like eating a chocolate-dipped banana. Holy crap. Finish and everything. Still, the maltiness creates a little cinnamon booze that gives it a little extra back. Like nothing I have experienced - lots of notes of Aventius without the spritely carbonation and spice...but even carbonation picks up after a while. This is getting better with warmth. Yeast strain must be 3068 lulled into mellowness with the entire Dick's Picks library. This shit is downright creamy. Slight booze kicks in after a few minutes - it actually dries it up a little nicely. Dark fruits make an entrance with a fair amount of warmth.

I warm this up just a little bit by letting it sit because at first there is a slight clamminess akin to keeping your bananas in the fridge. Carbonation makes an appearance and a more Germanic character of clove, Munich-esque malt and piney, spicy hops (Hallertau?) emerge to remind me that this is indeed a Germanic creation. Finish has a carbonation bite that gets more truly estery and spicy with warmth.

There's a whole lot of meat on this bone. Out of the tap this must be downright creamy. From the bottle it holds its own quite nicely. Heavy at times, spritely at others...there are a lot of ephemeral notes with this one. Still, it's another velvety project from Tod and Co. that works very well.

Drank from a 1 pt. 6 fl. oz. bottle purchased at the Portsmouth Brewery Company Store, Portsmouth, NH

Poured a dark, murky, amber-mahogany with a tan, fluffy, three-finger head that left huge rings of lacing all down the glass.

The aroma was spicy and fruity. Ripe banana, clove and allspice were apparent along with a rich, rummy, brown sugar kick. As the beer warmed, a smooth, fragrant yeastiness came out strong.

The taste was sweet, fruity and malt heavy as well. Caramel malts, dark fruits and spices were most noticeable. A tart, wheaty, lemony smack appeared on the back end, along with a rummy alcohol warming. The finish was initially slightly metallic and sour, but this seemed to slowly subside. A touch of hops also appeared as the beer warmed.

Mouthfeel was medium/thin with a fine, mild carbonation. If the beer faltered anywhere it was definitely in this area.

Drinkability was rather good. While I would have liked the unique complexities in the flavor of this beer to be a bit more pronounced, this was nevertheless a smooth and quaffable brew.

22oz bomber I purchased at the brewery during a visit that was nearly 2 years ago to this day. Poured into a matching Portsmouth snifter, the brew appears mahogany in color with a finger of yellowish stained khaki cap. It fades to a thin film leaving some spots of lacing effect on the glass. When held to the light, the brew shows a brilliant ruby clarity with a yellowish orange coloration around the edges.

The aroma is sweet with almost a belgian candy sugar sort of aroma blended with a hint of bubblegum and typical weizen yeast character. A hint of clove spice and some dark fruity quality reminiscent of raisins, apple and pears. As it warms up, there is a bit more focus on the dark burnt sugary quality like caramel, toffee or molasses.

The taste has a pretty solid focus on dark sugary fruit. Earthy apple skins, pear, raisin, prune. Some weizen yeast aspect minorly like clove and some wheat ygrain inclusion blends with almost a buttery bread aspect. A slight hint of cardboard and earthy almost molasses and herbal hops.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. The alcohol inclusion is well integrated at first and gets progressively warming as the experience continues. There is lots of character to take in with this brew and while it is quite complex, it is very enjoyable and easily approachable. I regret forgetting about this bottle for so long and wonder just how delicious she was when fresh. Regardless this was a good brew and I would buy it again if presented with the opportunity.

From notes. Plenty active, chestnut with thin tan head that rises and falls quickly. Backlighting reveals good clarity which is not anticipated or necessarily desired in the style.

Dark fruit, caramel malty, gently boozy, and faintly spicy. Kinda faint. Gotta work to get much.

Very rich caramel malty sweetness, gentle bitterness, and lightly floral hop flavors are all present. But the spicy and dark fruity flavors coming form the yeast add the depth and complexity and make it really good.

Good carbonation with rich full body. Highly viscous with a mildly bitter finish.

This quite sweet beer is pretty well done to style, I think. Better yet, it has layers of flavor depth and complexity that are very well balanced. This is a smooth, rich, balanced and complex brew.

Thanks rpstevens for this one. Large capped bottle poured into my Aventinus glass.

Copper with reddish highlights, minimal tan head, little retention.
Aroma shows sweet malts, bubblegum, anise, cloves.
Medium bodied, average carbonation, taste is mostly sweet, with similar notes from the aroma, but more anise than anything else. At times a little astringent, but never bitter.
Decent, but it is certainly no Aventinus.

Pours deep dark blood-red in color. Looks more like a Doppelbock. Not a ton of head or lacing. Smells typically of sort of roasted dark fruit, sweetness, a bit boozey. Typically again, more like a doppelbock. Flavour is absolutely massive. It is bready, it is thick, it is boozey. The first thing you notice is that it doesn't carry its alcohol too well, and that is the main drawback. It's got a lot of plumy flavours, not much in the way of citrus here. Mouthfeel is decent, appropriately carbonated. This is like a Weizenbock2.0, a lot stronger than you'd typically find. Also not as easy to drink, but still very good.

Poured into a tulip. This pours dark brown with about an inch of creamy beige head. It settles down to a thin layer of foam with sticky lace.

Toasty malts in the aroma; this one is very grainy with a hint of sweet caramel to finish it off. There is a slight floral hop aromA in the background here. Kind of a dark purple grape flavor here with a doughy finish. Wheat and toasty malts round this one out nicely.

This has a medium to light body. Really low carbonation with gives it a smooth feel. Overal not a bad beer, I'm not overly familiar with the style but this seems to be a good one.

Poured out with a hazy brown color the head had a slight retention ring around the edge of the glass. The smell of the beer was malty with some yeasty esters and spice. The taste is also malty with some sweetness with a finishing clove/banana finish. Overall the beer is pretty good,

Alewife and I enjoyed more today (28MAY06) on a visit with Artied2... Must say the clovey aspect was much more pronounced, in both the aroma and flavor. Still lovely sweetness with some choco, but very much more in the Aventinus-style than last time we had it. Bump-ups for flavor and aroma. Yummy!

Shared a couple of pints over lunch today (20FEB05) with Alewife at the Brewery. Mmmm...!! Poured a clear, deep, dark chestnut hue, crowned by a fine, light tan head. Topping didn't last too long, yet it laced up the glass quite nicely. Aroma was of light, sweet malt, with a touch of clove. It had a medium body, and a bit more than normal smoothness across the palate. Lots of maltiness in the flavor, though not overly sweet like a Doppelbock can be. A smidge of clove, but flavors actually do more closely mimic a Doppel than a true Weizenbock like Aventinus. Has a nutty character, and the maple syrup added in its making is pleasantly noticeable as well. The finish is rather dry, with a floral hop presence adding a good balance. Let this baby warm up, though, as many luscious flavors come to the fore at somewhat higher temps. A supremely quaffable offering from the esteemed Mr. Mott. (4.5/3.5/4.0/4.0/4.5 - 4.05)
