Notes: An explosion of hops dominate this deep golden ale. Brewed with four varieties of hops & dry hopped with three other hops, the flavor is powerful. Not a harsh bitterness, but a full hop flavor.

Presentation: 22 oz bomber from the brewery, cool paper label with a good amount of info on the brewery.

Appearance: I noticed that the lace clinged to the glass right away. Slightly hazed golden amber hue shows that a good amount of hops were used.

Smell: Clean hop aroma with a delicate citric and flowery tone.

Taste & Mouth Feel: Medium bodied with a sustaining crispness. Pow! The palate is clean cut with hop bitterness with a long winded graceful citric flavor. Lots of hop flavor … seriously it has taken over my taste buds for the moment. Modest malt back bone nearly crumbles from the heavy hop character, thankfully it holds strong and seems to balance for the most part. Touch of nutty yeast and a mildly estery alcohol show up in the semi-sweet and bitter finish.

Drinkability & Notes: Wow! I would not change a thing about this brew, the hops kicked the crap out of my palate with no complaints. Nice to have a hop fix like this …

Update 03AUG03 - Rich copper color and clear. Creamy white head, sticks excellently...looks great. Touch o' toasty malt with plenty of citrussy hops. Mmmmm.. Medium-plus body, with a smooth-creamy feel on the tongue. Toasty, bready malt to start, and then plenty (!) of west-coast hops. Oh baby, oh mama!! This version is top-friggin'-shelf!!! Love it!!

*** ***

(Original 03AUG02)
This Portsmouth IPA has an attractive light-copper color, with a fine, creamy head (which dissipates quickly to a thin layer). Said head leaves some good lacing. Nose was somewhat mild, to me. A touch of malt, and some hoppiness more-so, but still understated. Body was medium, but fairly smooth as it passed over my tongue. Leads-off with a semi-sweet, biscuity, light pale-malt flavor, but then the hoppy flavors start to come through. They are a bit citrusy (cascades are used), yet not too strong. All-in-all, a good quaffin' bier. (4.0/3.5/4.0/4.5/4.5 = 4.00) Prosit!!

Poured into a imperial pint glass a clear rich copper with some real deep orange tint a tight fluffy one finger head atop leaving broken sheets of lace behind as it settled. Not as big in the American hop profile as maybe I had hoped in the nose I picked up some apricot and a hefty leafy presence along with a big caramel malt presence not the big citric and pine I was expecting.I get some of that citric/grapefruit presence on the palate but it doesnt hit real hard a lingering leafy note sticks around for awhile as well a caramelly biscuit malt base stays firm till the finish wich lingers nicely. Its a fine IPA it has a real hop presence but maybe just not as big as I had expected, again its still a real solid American style IPA with a bit of UK flare.

I really liked this one. Sweetish and hoppy. Oaty malts, gives it some sweetness, hoppy, quite bitter finish, tea-like hops, nice soft texture, and a nice round mouthfeel, really lovely stuff, if only they brewed IPA's like this back home, beautiful stuff(Cask- GBBF 03')

My wife brought my this 22oz bomber home from the brewery on a recent trip to Portsmouth, NH. If you have not been to Portsmouth and the brewery, leave right now. One of the nicest places on earth.

Pours out a beautiful light copper color with a good size head that lasts. The smell isn't too overwelming but seems to be mellow and just right. I just looked in the bottle at the left overs and there appears to be a lot of floaters.

Taste is nice. Hoppy and bitter but not overpowering. It just melds well with the malt. Floral and piney with a hint of coffee bitterness as well. No alcohol notes present at all. So smooth and balanced.

This is one of my favorite IPA's. Seek it out and go to Portsmouth.

The web site says this IPA is a regular offering, since May 2003.

This IPA poured a hazy, amber color with good white foam that coated the glass. The smell was a very pungent floral hop aroma that really persisted. Very nice! The taste was dominated by floral and bitter hops: piney, green, grapefruit are among the adjectives that came to mind. There was a good malt flavor to balance the hops. The mouthfeel was smooth with a very dry finish. The body was medium with low carbonation feel. There was a "chewy hops" feeling to this beer. This was quite a good IPA, hopping with flavor.

I was having a hard time telling if this is Smuttynose IPA or something different.
Pours a slightly hazy brownish amber, topped with a one finger creamy off-white head, leaves webs of lacing.
Citrus, wood aroma, good biscuity malt backbone.
Citrus, woody, fruity taste. Great bitterness (80 IBUs), very lively, a good amount of biscuit, but it's definitely made for those citurs hops, leathery.
Medium bodied, matched well with spicy food.
