Full disclosure: The brewmaster handed me a sampler of this at no charge. So I did not evaluate a full 12 oz glass and it was fresh from the fermenter, not from the tap. This paw paw wheat is 9.0% ABV and 12 IBU.

Look: Hazy yellow with a white foam on top. Bubbles were consistently small. The foam dissipated after 30 seconds or so.

Smell: A citrus smell, not like a lemon, more mellow like a mango.

Taste: Tropical fruit, again like a mango. I think the paw paw taste blocked whatever hops were being used (cascade?) It was faintly balanced with a sweet malt flavor. Taste of the paw-paw was pleasant.

Mouthfeel: Well carbonated.

Drinkability: I'm not a huge fan of fruit beers but this sure was tasty. I could do 24 oz of this on a hot summer afternoon. Be careful, 9.0% ABV.

My expectations on fruit beers: I think they should start with a simple beer like a pilsener or wheat and augment it with the fruit de jour. So I expect a refreshing beer with a solid fruit flavor. This beer delivered just that. It was flavorful and the brewmaster was confident enough to not let the hops or malt get in the way of the paw-paw.

On tap at Marietta Brewing Co. on 11/26/10.

A - Slightly hazy golden body with a thin, bubbly white head that reduced to a patchy film and a ring of retention around the rim of the glass.

S - Initial aroma suggests light tea-like hops, which impart a leafy, herbal quality and a hint of mint. Nose is semi-sweet, though not as fruity as I was anticipating. Quite complex.

T - My first take on this is that it is subtly fruity and not overly sweet at all. Hints of pear, apple and citrus fruit emerge, as well as a leafy, minty or herbal quality, reminiscent of lemon herbal tea. As the liquid warmed up, this unassuming wheat beer became quite complex, offering wine-like notes (especially Riesling... good call, Deuane!), though never becomming too sweet or overpowering. Finishes with a semi-sweet grape character and a hint of bready malt in the backend.

M - Light bodied and pretty thin but with an oily, light syrupy texture. Reminds me of the light syrup in canned fruit. Carbonation is quite timid. Finishes sweet on the palate with minimal hop bitterness.

D - Wow! I found this to be a really light and complex wheat beer. This is almost like a wheatwine with a semi-sweet grape character. I never even heard of a pawpaw before I had this beer. Unique, tasty and devilishly drinkable for a 9% brew!

I was fortunate enough to walk into the Marietta Brewing Company when this was on tap. It was served in a goblet and was 9.0% ABV according to their chalkboard.

A - Pale, golden straw colored. Somewhat cloudy. Very thin head that dissipated rather quickly. No lacing to speak of whatsoever. But that's really where the negatives stop...

S - Absolutely delicious smelling. Intensely fruity, akin to Fruit Stripe gum, undoubtedly lent by the unique Pawpaw fruit. Also, wheat.

T - True to the smell.. a fruity wheat beer, but not overly sweet. Some VERY subtle floral and spice notes. Nearly perfectly balanced taste. Aftertaste remains fruity.. It's hard to describe exactly how the fruitiness tastes without saying, "tastes like pawpaw". Comparisons to bananas, mangoes, etc, only do it partial justice.

M - Quite low on the carbonation, really. Somewhat rich feeling for a wheat beer, almost juicy in a way. Highly pleasant.

D - A very, very refreshing drink. Smooth, balanced, tasty. Perfect on a hot summer day.

Served at Casa Nueva in Athens, OH

A. Hazy wheat color with no head and no lacing

S. Smells rather tart with sour apple and lemon

T. The tartness comes through in the taste with sour apple, lemon, grass and pear. As it warms some of the sweetness comes out with banana and almost- mango flavor.

M. Medium bodied with prickly carbonation.

D. The drinks very easily and the 9% is hidden quite well. The ladies I was with enjoyed this immensely - my wife said that it is the second beer we've had at a brewery that she's upset she can't get regularly. (The other was Kuhnhenn's Tangerine Wit - brewed one time only for their Summer Solstice 2010.)

On tap in a pint glass at Casa Nueva on 7/3/10

A - Cloudy pineapple gold. The bartender poured too carefully, so no head retention or lacing.

S - Wheat with citrus notes, bordering on tropical. Grapefruit & pineapple juice, the later being more apparent with warmth.

T - Right in line with the nose. Toasty wheat & subtle juicy citrus - mostly pineapple with hints of orange peel & grapefruit pith. Faint spiciness.

M - Lighter in body; carbonation is average, maybe a tad toward the low side. Pineapple & wheat linger.

D - Kind of an odd beer, but enjoyable enough. I imagine it's more enjoyable on a sunny afternoon, as opposed to a bar at night. I'm not familiar with pawpaw; I've read it has similarities to mango, so it likely accounts for some of the juicy aspects.

From the Bramwell Oktoberfest 2008.

First I had a nice, little sample glass; later, there was a full pint. Cloudy yellow, thin head, no lacing. That's the only weak point of this beer.

Sweet, fruity aroma. That would be the pawpaws, I'd guess. Same with the flavor. Odd, hard to place fruit over a solid wheat-malt base. Fruity and beer-like at the same time, something so many fruit-wheats miss.

Good, refreshing mouthfeel. Good carbonation. Very refreshing (so much so it's worth pointing out twice). Exceptionally drinkable.

Marietta Brewing usually has one of the better booths at Bramwell and this year was no exception. Pawpaw Wheat was a favorite of many festgoers, this goer included. Well worth picking up if you're in the Marietta, Ohio area.

Well done, Kelly.

I got the Pawpaw Wheat on-tap at Casa Nueva in Athens, OH. It was exciting to see a beer with pawpaws (SE Ohio is the prime area for pawpaws in the US). it is my understanding that this is a fall release since the pawpaw harvest is always in September and they have a short storage life. Anyhow....

Appearance: gold, straw color with virtually no head
Smell: fruity; banana? maybe; decent smell
Taste: really different than any other beer I've had; it reminds me of a strawberry-banana smoothie flavor; i can't detect any hops here; it's a good flavor though; you don't get sick of the sweetness; i wish i had a better flavor and knowledge of pawpaws
Mouthfeel: medium bodied
Drinkability; actually, pretty good for a fruit beer; the sweetness doesn't wear you out

I will definitely try this again before it runs out; a very unique beer
