For me, it is New ChiCANgo(land) Beer Sunday (Week 575) & I am availing myself of the opportunity to get into some CANs that just kept getting shunted to the side. I am slowly getting The CANQuest (tm) on-track, up-to-date & ready to begin trading again.

From the CAN: "Chicago Grown Est. 1996"; "IPA"; "Lake Barrington, IL"; "Artwork: AndrewReband.com".

Once again, the Crack! reveals that The Onion/Wild Onion is not skimping on their fill! It was resistant to being opened and was as loud as any in recent memory. That said, it is not CANducive to an inverted Glug and so I was gentle with its pour. It was to no avail, though as it still evinced just the slightest of haze. Color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13). Nose had a minty pine scent along with a sweet tangerine citrusiness and an underlying caramel malt sweetness. I love these kinds of AIPAs! Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was more tropical than the nose had led me to expect! I got mango, tangerine, papaya and a pleasant caramel sweetness. Even as a self-avowed hophead, I CAN sometimes do without the bitter onslaught of some AIPAs. This served as a welcome change of pace. Finish was semi-dry, more fruity than bitter and when CANbined with the caramel malt sweetness, it was amazingly drinkable.

An excellent IPA! Only had it on draft so far. Haven't tried the can yet. Great hoppy aroma, a little unfiltered feel. Very drinkable.

Wild Onion Brewery "Misfit IPA"
12 oz. can without any production codes or freshness dating
$1.83 @ Cherry Hill Wine, Liquor & Beer, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Well it's pretty hazy, even cloudy, but I guess that's the new thing in IPA, isn't it? It's a reddish kind of orange, and the head is a creamy off-white that's almost khaki in color. The aroma is piney and citrusy over some sweetish caramel malt. It's not the brightest but it's not bad, and it seems fresh enough despite not having any dating or codes on the can. The flavor is a little bit of a let-down though. The hops found in the aroma don't carry over, nor does the malt in fact, and it's just kind of dull. There's some additional fruitiness to it, I'm guessing from the yeast, but it's just some apple-like stuff that doesn't do anything to help it. I get dull caramelish and bready/toasty malt, a median bitterness given that it's an IPA, and yeasty fruitiness followed by some light citrus and then lingering pine and bitterness in the finish. It just doesn't live up to the aroma. It's medium bodied and smooth in the mouth will a very fine, low-level carbonation. That's actually great, it helps its drinkability, but it doesn't seem to have helped with head retention, although it's surprisingly still left some great lacing behind. Overall it's just boring. Maybe it is old.

A: Dark rustic orange coloring has a dense nature and a moderate amount and rise of carbonation. A one inch firm, frothy topping has a thick consistency, almost yogurt like, and holds firmly. A nice bready lace band encompasses the vessel. Lasting top coverage.

S: Lemon-lime hops have back-notes of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. Fresh and wet nose. Backdrops of lightly toasted bread crust of moderate strength.

T: The flavor had a prickly bright citrus-lime taste, coming forefront, followed by a toasted bready malting and dry hopping of cascade hops. Sticky hop resins of pine are viscose and juicy, and particularly dank in nature, blending perfectly with the dry citrus hop finish. Grapefruit and slightly dry lemon peel add a slight bitterness and dryness along with a nice level of mixture and flavor to the bittering hops.

M: Thick and bready mouthful, malty and chewy, of soft toasted bread and grains. Soft massage of carbonation, frothy feel on the tongue with lots of dank hop resins providing a sticky and flowery finish off the tongue.

O: A deep malty and bready palette has loads of juicy and dank hop resins and oils, finishes dry and flowery from a respectable amount of dry citrus hops. Very good first impressions, lasts to the very end of the drink, with a high enjoyable and drinkability rate that should impress and interest the most dedicated of hop heads. Loads of dank juicy hops provide a nice range of flavor and sticky resins along with a finishing bittereness makes this a well developed and rewarding drinking experience. Is it just a coincidence I am a huge misfits fan and there are 138 current reviews? Fiends will get it.

The name of the brewery is fitting, because I tasted a bunch of pungent onion flavor in this beer. Very malty, prominent onion flavor overtakes all else, little bit of bitterness on the end. The onion flavor lingers on the tongue. Slightly slick and oily mouth feel too, not so pleasant. Maybe a hint of toffee flavor there as well.

I saw this on the menu at the Tapalpa Mexican Restaurant in Elk Grove Village, IL. Since I've tried several Wild Onion Brewery beers before, I decided to add this one to my list. $5 for a 12oz can along with a short 10oz frosted beer glass. There was no freshness date on the can but this is one of their year round brews, so I wasn't too worried about it.

The beer poured a hazy copper color with a nice 2-finger off white head that lasted a little over a minute. The lacing was decent as well. The glass they give you won't hold the entire can so I had to make two separate pours.

The Citra and Cenntenial hops in here give off a big grapefruit aroma along with some other tropical fruits. A little malt sweetness comes through as well.

I hope you like bitter IPAs because that's what you're getting here. 75 IBUs of grapefruit and other tropical fruit hoppiness tamed only slightly with a dash of caramel malt sweetness. Definitely not a beer to gulp down quickly. This one's a slow sipper.

The beer is not syrupy thick, but it is on the medium to heavy side as far as body goes. Carbonation is medium high, which is perfect for this style beer,

If you like grapefruit flavored beer then you're going to love this. If you don't like high bitterness or the flavor of grapefruit, then I'd give this one a pass.

12 fl oz. can, no canned on date or freshness information. A new one to me from Wild Onion, acquired a single can of this stuff as part of a mixed six pack at the local Binny's.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.

A - Pours a deep dark candied caramel orange body, super hazy and unfiltered, tons of sediment, one finger of thick frothy soapy off-white head that leaves nice thin scattered lacing. Appears aptly carbonated. I'm liking the looks of this one. Looks very nice.

S - Aroma is fairly light, but what's here is nice - notes of must, caramel, toffee, wood, bread dough. An interesting aroma, not fruity or dank, but lightly herbal.

T - Follows the nose: earthy, woodsy, caramel / toffee malt, brown bread, bread crust. Very interesting malts to hops ratio here. Hops are earthy, grassy, & pithy. Notes of lemon peel, caramel, toffee, vanilla.

Overall, one of the better beers I have had from Wild Onion. Very nice.
