The appearance is severely carbonated, especially for style. It took me two volcano-overflow pours for me to finally get it right. The head shinks very fast. The color is a deep brown; very nice hue. The head eventually evaporates completely.

The aroma is gritty oatmeal and mild chocolate. Dark raisin and plum on the second wave. Mocha adds more chocolatey goodness. Both sweet and dry in the nose.

The taste is sweet plums and bitter grape. The chocolate emerges and eventually takes over. Except for a minor coffee bean, there is almost no bitter bite. A hint of vanilla bean.

The feel is somewhat ashy on the palate, but then smooth. Thin-bodied for a stout, but milky. The beer overall is lots of chocolate, and a little sweet berry. A pretty decent sweet stout.

Appearance: Pours a pitch black color with a huge head - too much, in fact, though the retention is good; not much lacing, surprisingly

Smell: Dark chocolate, rather sweet, with a hint of coffee

Taste: Sweet, dark chocolate, up front; the same in the middle and in the finish; obviously, not much complexity

Mouthfeel: A real problem here, as the medium body is overwhelmed by fizzy carbonation, that prickles the tastebuds

Drinkability: The mouthfeel mars what would otherwise be a decent, though not complex, stout

A - Had the look of dark black coffee, with little head and no lacing. (Which could be cause of my glass, but none the less.)

S - Roasted coffee beans was the most prominent smell.

T - Noticed a little bit of sweetness, butterscotch perhaps or maybe molasses. Strong coffee flavor, for a non coffee drinker, I really like it in beer.

M - Very dry yet subltley smooth, low carbonation like most stouts.

D - Very much so, a couple in a sitting is nice.

A: Black, but not too black. Pretty much your average stout color.

S: Can smell the roasted malts right off the top. Not to strong, but good. Not much of a hop character going on.

T: i dont know what happened here, but it seems a litte watery for me. There's also a wierd veggie taste going on in the backround. Not much in the hops area.

M: Mouthfeel is fine. Carbonated just right.

D: Would be better if I wasnt getting that weird veggie taste.

I had this beer a month ago (didnt review it) and it was a very decent stout. Maybe I happened to get a bad one.

Well, this is the last of my Cooperstown beers. To be honest, I have not been overwhelmed. Ommegang is worth the trip to Cooperstown... But I'll leave it at that.

This beer poured with a finger thick beige foamy head that formed then immediately vanished. The beer was the color of cola and perhaps a shade or two darker. No lacing at all. Literally looks like soda in the glass.

Aroma was of cocoa powder and some grains.

Flavor was sweet, slightly of cocoa and them a touch of bitter hops near the end. Lots of grain flavor and a bit dry....almost astringent. A bit watery.

Mouth feel was very light. Too light in my opinion.

It's drinkable, but it's not very complex..

Not close to the top stouts I've encountered.

Notes from web site: "Strike Out" is brewed with 6 malts including a balanced portion of chocolate and crystal malts. It is also brewed with 5% flaked oats for a velvet-like mouth feel. English pale, Munich and black malt, plus roasted barley round out the malt bill. Considerably lower in alcohol than both Benchwarmer Porter and Old Slugger Pale Ale, "Strike Out" is a well-rounded stout, opaque black in color with a roasted palate. Original Gravity 1.048 / Final Gravity 1.012 / 4.6%. Served at the Brewery.

A Really dark, black body under a light brown frothy head. The head reminds me a lot of the Benchwarmer Porter. The body is much darker (can you get darker than black?).

S Deep, dark coffee like smell. Appropriate and pleasing.

T Really dark, even grainy coffee taste.

M Full, grainy mouthfeel. Very appropriate for the style.

D Suffers from heavy mouthfeel and fullness in terms of drinkability. This is a great stout.

A - Almost entirely black with a bit of a brown hue. Nice light tan head

S - Roasted coffee aromas, with some malt sweetness to let you know it's a oatmeal stout. Fairly smokey

T - Bitter chocolate with toasted malts. Back to the coffee flavors again. Not as sweet or oatmeal as expected for style

M - Medium to thicker MF, and pretty chewy. Definitely rep. of the style

D - Pretty decent, and easy to quaff.

Overall, this is a decent example of the style but nothing too extraordinary. Fun stuff, though and I would recommend.

Pours opaque with a thin tan head. Minimal lacing. Strange was the small head and high remaining carbonation level even with a strong pour. However, that is about all that's wrong with this beer.
Smells roasty and malty with hints of cocoa and espresso.
Nice smooth flavor of rich roasted malts. Semi-sweet with a generous chocolate presence. Powdery dryness and a coffee-like bitterness in the finish from roasted malts and a touch of hops that perfectly rounds it out.
Extremely drinkable and tasty.

Picked up a Cooperstown sampler at the brewery during a recent trip to the H.O.F.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a pint glass.

A - Poured black with slight ruby hues. Decent brown head that totally disappeared in seconds leaving only a bubbly ring around the glass. Very highly carbonated for a stout.

S - Malty with hints of chocolate.

T - Malty and slightly sweet. Hints of chocolate and roasted coffee. Finished with a slightly bitter hop bite and a slightly metalic taste.

MF&D - Not a bad beer, but a little too thin. I also like my stouts a little less carbonated. Definitely worth checking out.

pours a dark brown bordering on black the tan head fades quickly but leaves a spring of effervesence making me think it might be alive. the aroma is slightly sweet not only due to the malt, which provides a nice chocolatey earthy aroma, but there's a bit of fruit ester as well. the taste is nice and earthy the malts come through well with a dry finish and plenty of carbonation.

This poured pitch black with lots of bubbly tan head. It smelled like alcohol, raisins, and heavily roasted mocha. It tasted quite dry, like very dark and bitter chocolate with roasted coffee malt. It was fairly thin and very carbonated, with a mild coffee aftertaste. Overall this was not a good stout. There was no distinguishing character to it, and it was too thin. And like all of the Cooperstown beers, it had way too much head and carbonation. Their beers struggle to conceil the alcohol scent/flavor, and this stout was the only one without the lemon hops scent (thank goodness).

A- Pitch black color, non-transparent, one finger thick dark brown head that lowered to a thin cover

S- Bakers chocolate, black coffee, creamy, hint of smoke

T- Dark chocolate, roasted malts, coffee beans, mild bitterness, slightly sweet finish

M- Medium body, medium carbonation, smooth, flavorful, well rounded

D- Decent session beer

This beer is fairly light feeling for a stout but it is definitely not lacking in flavor.

Poured black as night with a minimal 1/4 inch tan/brown head. This one let absolutely no light through. The smell was a nice nutty coffee mix with hints of dark chocolate. The taste was on par with the smell, starting off nutty and bitter with definite hints of coffee, cocoa, and toffee. Definite roasty malt character as well. The mouthfeel was not what I hoped for. Not much substance for a stout. A little too watery. Decent carb and nice aftertaste. Solid stout and definitely worth a try.

A - Pours a pretty dark, almost pitch black, with ruby highlights. Head fizzes up and falls quickly like a soda.

S - Fruity and roasty, with notes of molasses and cocoa.

T/M - Whoa. Dry. Strong, black coffee and a hint of hops in the finish. Very astringent. The actual body itself I would call medium.

D - Not the best I've had. Very in your face with a tannic? astringency and dryness that is very puckery. Kinda harsh.

Appearance: Black beer with waaay too much carbonation, causing me to have to stop pouring about 75% of the way through to let the head die down. A 12 oz bottle should fit in my Duvel tulip I think.

Smell: Not so good. There is some good stuff in the background. Chocolates, malts, coffee. But at the forefront is a strange sour smell that is almost soapy, this ruins the good stuff.

Taste: Just like the nose. You get the sweetness and the maltiness and the coffee. Unfortunately, the sourness takes over more and more as you go.

Mouthfeel: Nice thick creamy body but the massive carbonation takes away from the mouthfeel.

Drinkability: Not a very good stout. The combination of the carbonation and the odd sourness takes away any of the good things this beer may have had to offer.

Cooperstown Strike Out Stout poured black with an offwhite head and suspect bubble structure. Mild aroma of chocolate and fruit. Bittersweet chocolate, charcoal and a bit of fruit for flavor. High carbonation and medium-full body.

Stike One: bubble formation though tall, had the look of a gusher or my 1st attempts at homebrew.

Strike Two: Aroma & flavor not bad, but too weak to put the ball in play.

Strike Three: Gas, not Nolan Ryan's fastball, but good old carbon dioxide. This made it undrinkable. It was just plain gassy.

12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a dark brown/almost black with some garnet highlights around the edges and a finger width of foamy tan head. Retention was good but the lace didn't choose to stick on this one, instead opting to just slide down the glass. The aroma is roasted malt, chocolate sweetness, and some funky sour notes.

The taste is of roasted notes, smokiness, some light chocolate and malt sweetness. Unfortunately, that same funky sour character rears it's ugly head and completley kills the beer for me. The mouthfeel isn't much better, being thin and watery with way too much fizzy carbonation in the finish.

I don't know what happened with this guy. I'm not sure if I got a bad bottle or if the funky nature of this Stout just doesn't agree with me but it was one of the few times that I've drain-poured a beer. This guy will definitely be up for a re-review at some point down the line.

Pours a nice black color with LOTS of brown and tan head, much like a rootbeer float, but there's too much head and it takes several pours and waits to empty the bottle, good retention, spotty lacing. Smells are very roasted and smokey, with hints of chocolate, coffee, and caramel. Taste matches the smell, there is some chocolate and coffee flavors, but it's overly roasty with a smoky finish. Light in body for a stout, very high in carbonation. Too much roasted malt and carbonation for my liking, not very balanced.

The beer poured a dark inky opaque black with a huge dark tan head. The beer smells of roasted malts with maybe just a subtle hint of coffee. The taste has a very large roasted malts characteristic to it starting off with a tiny bit of bittersweet chocolate, with almost a smoky finish. The mouthfeel is crisp with more carbonation than I expected. I would consider this to be extremely drinkable for a stout, and I could probably put back two or three without any problems. Not a bad little beer, I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up picking up some more in the future.

Went to the brewery as part of a Cooperstown Beverage Trail run with some family. On the way out, picked up a mixed 12-pack of all of Cooperstown's offerings. The Strike Out is the last of the 6 types in there. A fitting end.

Poured coffee black into a nonic. Complete with a half inch of brown foam that quickly disappeared. The aroma was what you'd expect of a stout; roasted malts. The taste was bitter and smoked, almost ashen. Some malty sweetness shined through at the end. This was a thick brew. A decent stout. Nothing too different, nothing too special but definitely drinkable.

12 oz. bottle poured into a nonic (good thing).

Pours an almost onyx black with a huge three finger thin tan head that slowly dies down to a frothy layer. Stickiness decent, nothing to go crazy over. Smell, well it has the typical Cooperstown ringwood yeast aroma up front with a roasted nutty like scent. Some caramel malt and chocolate in the nose as well. Taste begins with a smokey oak flavor on the tongue followed by fresh espresso. Lots of nutty flavors and toasted barley all the way through to the finish. Aftertaste is a smokey chocolate malt, not bad. Mouthfeel is light to medium with a solid carbonation. Not a bad beer at all. I was surprised the ringwood flavors weren't as present as the smell would lead you to believe. Solid stout offered by Cooperstown.

I poured this into my pint glass, and it came out a nice black with a very nice brown head. Smell contained some chocolate in there. Strangely however this stuff tastes a little different than other stouts I've had. It's a little bitter, body is a little weak, subtle coffee-like aromas, some astringency there but overall not very complex, which isn't totally a bad thing. Only complaint here is that it's a little over-carbonated.

Really not a bad beer, not "flavor overload" like some really complex stouts, but still a solid offering.

Poured dark from the bottle with a light brown head, two fingers. Good spotty lacing. Smells of chocolate biscotti. Taste of rich dark chocolate, roast malt with a dry mouthfeel that makes me think of brazil nuts. Bitter finish. I found this very drinkable, not overly complex, but certainly has flavour ... a real delight with a certain lightness for the style.

Ink black in colour. Opaque complexion. A minimal level of creamy, ocher hued head. Dotty lacing. Simple, not overly attractive but certainly respectable. Looks the part for a stout.

The aroma harbors faint notes of chocolate and coffee. The malts carry a heavy roast element. There is even a considerable presence of smoked character. It is very nice. My only complaint (and a very valid one, I feel) is that it dies out far too quickly and can only be enjoyed through the demanding need for constant swirling.

The mouthfeel has a crisp bitterness, on the lower end of the scale, but present and sharp nevertheless. A coarse, chalky, mineral filled water must have been used, this certainly has aimed for (and hit) that aspect of the English style. The water profile suits the beer well, lending it some body. There is a slight note of smoke on the finish.

The flavours starts to delve closer to the American style, showcasing soft notes of coffee and roast, chocolate malts. Hint of tobacco. A good depth to the malt bill has created layers of flavour, all aspects balanced well. It pairs well with a number of deserts, including the chocolate chip cookies I plan to enjoy soon...

While many American brewers load up the malts, jack up the alcohol, and have kicked the stout up a few notches, Cooperstown keep their Strike Out Stout to more traditional means. For that reason it's largely unexciting in comparison, but that can't be held against it. All aspects considered this is a fine, rather sessionable stout.

Pours black with a tannish carmel colored head. Aromas of caramel and a roasty malt presence. Tastes of the same, small amount of caramel, roasty malt and a chocolate presence. Light in the body with a clean end. It has a very nice flavor, for a lighter body.
