Obolon Lager....in the bottle at Veselka in Manhatten NY

Appearance-pours a musty gold/yellow, overactive head burst up linges for a minute or so and then dissipitates.

Smell-musty, mix of corn and other starch, alcohol, not much else

Taste/Mouthfeel-light mouthfeel, notes of corn mostly and not much else sour and grainy, ok smoothness, finishes clean,

Drinkability-no major issues

Overall-a less than adequete lager, not a disaster but it doesn't measure up

Appearance - Poured a light and clear straw color with a good head.

Smell - Not any malt to speak of, only slight herbal hops. Maybe a little bit skunky. Overall nothing to write home about.

Taste - Overall the flavor is very unbalanced. Malt is almost absent from the flavor. The Hops are present but overly bitter, with a lingering (and unpleasant) bitter aftertaste. I think it tastes like what a mouthfull of grass would taste like - not very good.

Mouthfeel - Carbonation is good but the overall feel is watery.

Drinkability - I didn't like the overall flavor at all so I wouldn't drink this beer again. However, it is light so if you like the flavor you could drink several without feeling overly full.

Pours with a four-fingered white head that fades slowly and leaves good lace. A golden color. Nose has a hint of skunkiness maybe it is because of the green bottle. Starts hoppy/bitter, finishes hoppy and bitter. Very good carbonation. Light to medium bodied. $1.90 for 500ml.

Serving Type: 1pt .9fl oz

Appearance: Pours a bright gold colour w/ no head.

Smell: Grainy hops, malt and a touch sweet

Taste/mouthfeel: a little bit of the malt comes through a little sweet and ends a bit grainy. Almost a touch skunky at the end...odd metallic taste at the end. Leaves a grainy feel in the mouth....but it is a touch smooth

Drinkability:this is like a little bit stonger of a Heineken...and not any better than that or other more generic beers. Pass this up if you get the chance...

Poured into a pint glass.

A/S: The beer looks and pours like nothing special, good head retention and lacing, smells pretty nice, like something that was roasted on a wood fire.

T: I must say I did not care very much for this beer, the initial taste was a tad bit bitter had a decent hoppy taste to it. This taste then gives way to an extremely bitter aftertaste that is almost offensive if not washed down with another beverage or another sip of obolon.

M/D: Not gonna get any major points here, I have had much cheaper beers that felt and drank better than this.

I have had worse beers than this but many more that are better. It doesnt hurt to try it once , but not something I will probably be getting again any time soon.

Glad to see others found this "skunked," as I did while tailgating for U2 May 18th outside Continental...annoying over-lagerish bottom, tinny odor and metallic aftertaste did not endear this Ukrainian brew... thank God for "Love and Peace"...Wal-Mart’s Green Lightning in alcoholic form....

Pale yellow color, light white head and lacing. Nose of light hop and fruity malt, some alcohol and husky corn. The flavor is a bit biscuity with some lighter hop notes, stronger sweet alcohol and some malt accents. The finish is a non-event, as is most of this beer.

Slightly chill hazed pale golden color with a white head that dies pronto. Very skunky aroma with a malt backup. Tastes rather sweet and malty with a dry hoppiness in the finish. Doesn't taste skunky, just green bottle IV ray amplified skunky; not offensive, just not really what I was expecting. Generalized lager qualities abound. A bit like Grolsch, in my opinion. Not venturing to try one again.

500 ml of beer from a green colored bottle. Uh oh. On to the beer:

Tinted gold pale yellow in color, the head on topm is moderately thick with a soapy texture and decent retention. Spicy hops in the aroma, some are a little stinky, herbal as well, with a light pale malt sweetness. That's about what I expected.

Well, I'm not disguested, but the flavor is shallow. There's some "spciy bitterness" from the hops, a kiss of honey from the malt, no skinky flavor which is good. It felt almost like water in the mouth, as the carbonation level was set very low.

Obolon won't turn my world upside down, but it will knock off Ukraine as a country to review beer from.

Simple amber, not quite pallid enough to qualify as straw. A few large bubbles cling to the sides of the glass, while smaller ones zoom up to a white cap that looks to be of poor quality. The foam isn't the least bit sticky and very little lace forms as a result.

I smelled skunk on crown cracking and I still smell skunk. Interestingly, the graininess of the beer covers up the badness to some extent whenever I actually put my nose over the glass. There's nothing especially noteworthy about the stale noble hoppiness of the aroma. Open a few hundred other EPLs and you'll get the same thing.

I wonder why Obolon Lager is classified as a Euro pale lager and the other Obolon pale lagers that I've had (Magnat and Premium) are called American macro lagers? I don't care enough to read through my other reviews, but as far as I remember, all three taste basically the same. Here's the short version: none of them are good beer.

I have no desire to describe yet another simple, harshly grainy, grassily bitter, borderline musty, don't-wanna-let-it-warm lager from Eastern Europe. Whoops, looks like I just did. This one might be slightly more bitter than most, but otherwise it's a black hole of originality. Not that I was expecting anything else.

The mouthfeel is par for the style course with a carbonation load that is peppy enough to keep the beer from feeling overly lackluster. I would have thought that all those bubbles would have resulted in better head formation and endurance.

It looks like Pshenichnoye (a hefe weizen) is still my favorite of the whole, sorry lot of Obolon beers. The one that I really want to try (Porter) has eluded me so far. As far as Lager goes, it's about as interesting as its name.

Poured a hazy yellow with a highly carbonated head that quickly fizzled down to barely a few bubbles.
The smell was grassy and "skunk" like. It reminded me more of a euro pils than a euro lager.
The taste had a raw yeast flavor and seemingly overboiled hops. It began pretty sweet and became more bitter as the drink progressed, to a sweet ending again. It had hints of a watery slightly metallic-like taste throughout. The only saving part was an underlying fruity - apple-like taste in the background.
The mouthfeel was thin - a slight creaminess that quickly disappeared. A dry feeling was left in the mouth.
One was enough for me. It was a below-average Euro-lager. The only possible refreshing part was the high carbonation and some slight apple-like hints. While I've had worse, this one didn't do it for me.

Straw color with faint haziness. The head collected decently, but deflation is inevitably swift.

Strong Euro malt nose with hay and grassy must, sweet grain, faint herbal notes, and a kiss of skunkiness.

A tad drier than the nose set me up for. Pilsner malt base with some yeasty flavors. Missing crispness. Pale steeped grain, herbal flavors in the outreaches of hop notes, and tentative bitterness. A little off-balanced.

Somewhat difficulty flat. The body is just there. Not enough bubbles to elevate the beer's potential.

Not great. A passable Euro lager.

Poured from a 500 ML bottle into a pint glass at the World of Beer in Pooler, GA. The appearance is a murky pale yellow color with a large white head. The aroma is grain and corn. The taste is skunky with a mostly grain flavor. A below average beer.

Appearance - Pours golden yellow, well-carbonated, typical lager.

Smell - Grainy smell that isn't terribly strong.

Taste - Generally malty, very mild bitter taste, has a distinct aftertaste. Nothing exciting about the flavor, but it wasn't offensive or strong either.

Drinkability - Nothing exciting about this beer, typical lager. Would probably get bored drinking this though and more drinkable and memorable lagers are out there.

Pours light golden & effervescent, with a 4 fingers+ white head. Okay lacing & head retention

S: Huge corny & sweet nose

T: Candy corn sweetness up front, then dryness. Iron & cloying sweetness follow. Finishes sweet, grainy, some apple notes & cloying, pretty bad.

MF: Light bodied & outta whack balance-wise. Adequate carbonation

Hard to choke down, especially as it warms. Wasn't bad enough to pour down the drain, but almost..

Classic lager - clear straw pour into the Bitburger pilsner glass, darn good white topping that leaves a good ring lace all the way down.

Big whiff of euro yeast skunk upon opening and pouring, it settles after awhile. Dry, grassy and grainy quaff, bit astringent finish - needs a crisper ending to make it truly a drinking beer. It was fun to sample, but I'd pass on future purchases.

BB end: 01/03/06.
A: served in a jug, it pours a clear, dark golden colour, with an initially fiercely fizzy body and a beer head disappearing in not time, leaving just a very thin layer of small bubbles.
S: immediately approaching is a deeply sweetish malt aroma, with a bit of bread and softly fruity hops in the background.
T&M: like the nose, it tastes predominantly malty at first, though less sweet as the aroma suggests; some refreshing but weak hop flavour at present at the rear, but towards the finish an unpleasant mixed flavour of sugar, lightly spice, rust, and medicine-like bitterness gradually come through, leading to a strange, conflicting mouthfeel on the tongue.
D: as a 5.2%abv lager it fails to present a fuller-taste and rounder texture. I don't like this beer.
