Walnut brown on the desktop and dark russet with apricot edges when backlit with early December sunshine. A tidy two finger slice of khaki colored foam looks decent, shrinks slowly, and is in the process of laying down a respectable amount of lace.

The nose is dark bock-like, which was expected given the name and the color. It has the earthy maltiness of the style... and doesn't otherwise impress. This should be pretty good beer, but isn't likely to be gangbusters on the buds.

Good call. Wohn's Dunkler Bock is of the same general level of quality as Wohn's Heller Bock. That is, above average, but far from the upper tier for the style. Age might be playing some role, but with no dates it's impossible to say for sure.

The malts are heavily toasted and cocoa-like, which helps add some flavor to a style that often struggles in that regard. Dark bocks are much better than pale bocks for this BA. Other flavors include baked nuts and cold tea.

A barely audible escape of CO2 on crown cracking was not a good sign. The beer is underbubbled without feeing completely flat. It's also on the thin side for the ABV.

For my money, Dunkler Bock is not one of the better versions of the style. It's an okay drinker on this chilly winter morning, but one bottle is going to be more than enough. Best to stick with the classics or find an American version that has guaranteed freshness on its side.

Gotta make this one a quickie....You really just need one every now and then, right?

When you see the name "Shelton Brothers" on the back, you know you're in for something good....fingers crossed...

Beautiful and understated dark amber brown in color. Wonderful head slowly and purposefully fills the glass. It's creamy smooth and nice to behold. Lacing is excellent. Medium carbonation.

$4.69/500ml bottle and 7.2%ABV. Both are nice, price a little high but not back-breaking.

Deep, German malt aromas. Lots of caramel malt. I get that brown sugar note that's so traditional to German beer. Note: not nearly as metallic as many German brews you get here. That bodes well...

Flavor is unique and rich. Smooth and malty. Some almost porter like characteristics from the darker malts used. Very round and smooth all the way through. The finish is a tad thinner than hoped for, but all in all this is excellent beer. A tad sweeter than is typical for the style, but the finish dries out nicely and makes this pretty well balanced. Long finish has nice bitterness. This is really well-crafted beer. No extremes at all, very drinkable and at that ABV could set someone up for danger. Flavor has a nice, off note that I can't place - almost like a fleeting juniper berry flavor. This is surprisingly good, complex and well balanced. Really worth tracking down.

What I like most: The excellent balanced flavor profile.

What I like least: The price and thinner than hoped for body. Like Jessica Alba...

Verdict: Very excellent and nice change of pace. Worth tracking down.

500ml bottle served in a Tank 7 tulip. Poured a deep mahogany with a thin off white head. Big malty aroma with some molasses, but also a slightly metallic twang that fades as it warms. Medium to full bodied and rich, almost into dopplebock territory. Molasses and dark fruit in the flavor. Nice beer.

Pours a dark shade of brown that appears ruby in the light, with a dense haze of micro sediment. Some sticky lace, a half ring at the edge with snaking tendrils all around.

Nutty aroma, dusty and faintly sweet with a mild hint of cocoa.

Husky grain, sweet nutty flavor. Some mild bitterness, slighty woody. Never had a hoppy Dunkel Bock, so that's a first. Seems like it would pair nicely with hearty German cuisine. Fairly sweet also, plenty of caramelized sugars, keeping this one a sipper. Good level of carbonation, medium bodied. Fairly robust for a Bock bier. Long lasting toasted nutty aftertaste. Decent enough, but I wouldn't seek it out again.

Seeing Bürgerbräu on the label got my hopes up, too bad it's unrelated to Wolnzacher Bürgerbräu.

This is another new one that I picked up at Knightly Spirits. Let's give it a shot...

Appearance: Pours a clear dark reddish brown color with a small 1/8" head of small tan bubbles that only stuck around for about 30 seconds. After this, it ended up as just a super small ring around the edge of the glass. I couldn't tell if there were many bubbles rising, but the net result is the same...very little head to maintain.

Aroma: I initially got some toasty malts and a clean caramel aromatic. After this, the cold beer doesn't really put forth that much more. I will come back to the aroma after it warms up a bit. As the beer warms up some, the Melanoidins come out more, and the caramel malts come across as a bit sweeter, so it comes across more dessert-like as it warms up.

Taste: The flavor is definitely malt driven with some solid dark malt induced fruitiness, like plums and such. There is a healthy dose of Melanoidins in this beer so it really comes across the palate like a traditional Bock. The beer itself is medium bodied with adequate to low carbonation, so it does finish a tad syrupy because of this fact. The finish itself is definitely balanced toward the malt and there is no detectable hops in the flavor. There is some balance from hops (and/or) some of the dark malts, but the malt in the big player here. The alcohol stays well hidden the whole time, and I really only feel the warming in the belly rather than on the back of the throat.

Opinion: This beer is pretty good. I would like it to have a bit more carbonation so that the finish was a bit more obscure, but overall it is a solid beer. Along the lines of a traditional Bock, it is nice...don't compare it to a DoppelBock and you will probably like it too.
