Church Brew Works : Breakfast Stout

Pours a dark brownish black in color. Off white head is small and leaves little lacing. Light aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. In the taste, well pronounced roasted malt, coffee, and lactose sugar providing a sweetness and a very faint sour note. Medium bodied feel with a good amount of carbonation. Overall, a nice little stout that you could easily categorize as a porter.

Went to Church Brew Works after a nice dinner down the street. I love Church Brew Works and couldn't wait to see what they had on tap. I was a tad disappointed when their coconut stout was kicked, so I decided to go for the Breakfast Stout.

A: Pours a dark, clear brown, with a one finger head. The head doesn't last long and recedes to a small ring of foam. No lacing at all. Kind of lackluster in appearance.

S: The smell is pretty faint with only a touch of coffee and roasted malts. It smells pretty dry and has some hints of bread and dry cocoa. But really, it is pretty faint.

T: The taste was watery. More porter-like than a stout. Some coffee comes through to couple a touch of roast, but the watery characteristic really trumps all. Not much flavor or anything noteworthy. All the components I look for in a breakfast stout were nowhere to be found: Rich, bold coffee, chewy mouthfeel, hearty chocolate, etc.

M/D: Light, watery.

Overall I was disappointed in this. Church Brew Works makes some amazing beers, but this one fell short.
