Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer isn’t quite a stout but it’s too dark to be an IPA. It might start out tasting kinda like a dry stout, but then the grassy and citrusy Amarillo hops kick in. We used Amarillos for bittering and the flavor/aroma additions. Judging that to be insufficient, we then dry-hopped the beer with Amarillos. We like the way Amarillos taste in this beer, so we went for it.

tap

Pours jet black with a dark tan head, creamy looking.

Smells of light cocoa and roasted malts, some piney hop undertones.

Chocolate and roasted malts with mild hoppiness.

Medium to full body with some tingles of carbonation across the tongue.

This was billed as a black IPA, but it definitely feels and tastes like a stout. It's also really good, one of the better chocolate-tasting stouts I've ever had. I would love to have this again and would strongly recommend it to anyone else looking for something in this style.

Church Brew Works : Renegade

Pours a dark brown bordering black with a solid layer of mocha foam and lots of lacing. Aromas of floral hops, roasted malts and some coffee. Billed as a hoppy stout, this is true in the taste, bitter roasted malts compliment the hop bitterness and leafy flavor. Coffee, cream and cocoa are all in the mix as well. Possibly some lactose sugar was used in brewing as there is a mild sweetness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, smooth and creamy. Overall, this was a really solid beer and I would certainly have it again.
