A: opaque; very dark brown - almost black; less than a 1 finger tan head that receded quickly to a thin collar; OK lacing;

S: grapefruit;

T: some roast along with honey/alcohol sweetness; alcohol is noticeable from the middle through the finish; the alcohol sweetness balances out the bitterness;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; dry finish; hides the ABV fairly well;

O: would have liked more bitterness; the hops didn't come through as clearly as I hoped;

DATE: February 6, 2021... OCCASION: beer six of the fest, splitting them with Jer, and enjoying the experience... GLASSWARE: plastic taster... jet black dark body supports a two-finger, ochre head that grounds to a creamy, cratered, bubbly smear of ominous haze... brilliant citrus--grapefruit, stone fruit, boozy lemon (if that is a thing), and resin...huge spruce presence with a roasted malt backbone that balances the top-heavy hops...medium-bodied, toasty, coating the teeth...lasting draw, strong and fulfilling... pine for days, with grapefruit, lilac and explosive lemon.... love these guys' personalities--a great duo to finish the show with...if C&H ships to this coast, I will be in line for their product...

Dark body with a modest tan head. Aroma-smells like an IPA: hops, pine resin. Fairly bitter with a touch of sweet. Very nice flavor: hops, tropical fruit, nutty flavors. Medium viscosity with good carbonation. I liked it!

The bitterness kind of slaps me across the face but the aroma and color are both beautiful. Not my pint of beer, but well done. The bitterness is expected from an IPA, and this in a well-executed IPA.

Not nearly as aggressive as I was expecting, but very tasty nonetheless. There were nice citrus and slightly tropical fruity notes, a mellow roast character, and a touch of hotness from the booze. Very very good.

Can from Half-time/BA for EBF 2021z pours black with a finger of rocky light tan head, nice lacing, smell is grassy dank hops, orange peel/zest, milk chocolate, hints of roasted dark malts, and horse blanket/dark malt husk funk, taste is bitter vegetal grapefruit zest, that transitions into dank pine, and finishes with bitter dark roast malt character, hints of dark chocolate covered coconut, coffee, burnt wood, and some barnyard funk, feel is medium bodied, medium carbonation, finish if fairly dry. I have not had a black IPA in a minute but this one is a boisterously brash and complex melange of dark malts, dank hops, and some roasty funk, a great example of pushing beer to the outer limits.

Smoky black body with a mocha colored head and thick lacing. Smell really does capture the best of both worlds with the citrus, resin, onion, and pine west coast hops and robust roast, char, malt, and earthiness of the black ale. Taste follows suit, but add in complexities of toast, melon, papaya, toffee, earthy hops, smoke and a touch of molasses. Complex and captivating. Feel has good roast and smoke to stand up against the hop bitters and resin, starts wet and finishes dry. Best black ipa I have had in years easily

This beautiful beer pours a dark cola brown with a dense tan head that provides substantial lacing. The first note on the nose is juicy, tropical citrus aromas, followed immediately by a molasses malt note. Wow.

The taste has juicy citrus flavors up front, primarily tangerines to my palate, but it’s that molasses flavor that makes this beer for me, along with a smidge of char. The flavors complement each other to the extent that there is no - as in zero - alcohol present in this 10% ABV TIPA. That illustrates the prowess of these breweries.

The mouthfeel is strikingly dry, per the WCTIPA style noted on the can. What a delicious, adventurous flavor ride this beer is.

Due to health reasons, F2020X3 was the only Beer out of the 10 in the BA Extreme Beer Fest box that I was able to enjoy this past Saturday. I picked the right one!

A moderate pour from a 16-oz. can produced a finger sized, creamy tan head with long retention and steaks of lacing. Deep dark brown body, approaching black, with ruby highlights.

Surprisingly malt greets the nose ahead of hops, roasted character with a slight char and rich semi-sweet chocolate, caramel and faint coffee. The hops are equally pine/resin and citrus (grapefruit and orange).

The taste begins neutral on sweetness with lower than expected bitterness, roasted and sweet malt flavors balance the hops perfectly. Baked pitted fruits appear and try for sweetness, a hint of smoke and an increase in roasted flavor evens things out. The alcohol is extremely well hidden, hardly noticeable until it warms. The finish is drawn out and semi-dry with sweet and bitter/roasted flavors battling to the end. The aftertaste lingers as bitterness rises to above average.

Medium body with lasting carbonation, not a lot of CO2 at first, this Beer still had some left after almost 2 hours. Almost smooth with a warming effect, a good case for an Imperial BIPA category. This Beer benefits from warming, the flavors become much bolder.

One of the Extreme Beer Fest beers.

Poured from a can into a tulip glass. Dark brown color with nice beige head and good lacing. Decent citrus smell and taste. Nice smokey roasted malt background. Earthy, dark toast. I was expecting the flavors to be a bit more pronounced but a good beer.

I do love a black IPA, and this extreme edition is no exception.
Pours black/brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is hop floral and roasted notes in the bitterness. Taste is defiantly hop forward, what you expect from a West Coast IPA. Feel is drying and smooth and right where it should be for an IPA. Overall it's a fantastic dark, hop forward IPA.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a brick red color with a one finger head of puffy tan foam. The head fades rather fast leaving a great sum of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strong of a pine and herbal hop smell mixed with notes of some sweeter caramel and toffee smells. Along with these aromas comes some notes of citrus, both sweet tangerine and bitter grapefruit, as well as some aromas of an almost chocolate like sweetness. Overall, the aroma is nice and inviting.
Taste – The taste begins with a rather lightly toasted bready flavor that is matched by some sweetness. The sweetness is mostly of a caramel and molasses flavor upfront, but contains a little bit of the citrus that was detected in the nose. At the same time, the hop starts out with a nice showing of a pine and herbal flavor right from the start, with these two tastes being the dominant in the hop flavor overall. As the taste develops however, other hop flavors of a earthy and very light grapefruit nature come to the tongue. At the same time the sweeter citrus develops a bit more, and with a decent hit of booziness, one is left with a very nice, lightly roasty and overall dank taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is thick and chewy with a carbonation level that is rather low. For the nice mix of more malty lightly toasted bready tastes, dank hop, and light sweetness the feel is great and makes this one a slow but dangerously easy to drink sipper.
Overall – A very flavorful, imperial black ale with a nice, dank hop taste, a dangerously easy drinking style, and big robust flavor. Quite nice!!

F2020X3 from BeerThugLife. Received on 20/1/21 for the Extreme Beer Fest – Cyberspace (2021) from Half-Time, Poughkeepsie, NY. $ 109.99 (Including tax and shipping). This is a 16 oz can ($ 0.702/oz). Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 7/2/21. (Note: I use DD/MM/YY protocol.)
Undated can. Served at 53.2 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 58.6 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Amber brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Ruby brown (SRM 24), opaque. When rear-lite, light penetration occurs around the edges showing a deep ruby/garnet.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.5 cm, aggressive center pour), wheat, high density quickly becoming rocky, average retention, diminishing to a one to two cm jagged crown and a thick, rocky cap. Second pour produces a dense 0.8 cm head.
Lacing – Good. Wide bands of near-microscopic to small bubbles, connected by short tapering columns.
Aroma – 4.5 – Earthy predominates with a bit of roasted malt and melon in the background, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.5 – Follows the nose, being mostly earthy with some smoke wafting by, along with some generic melon, no citra hops, and no yeast. No alcohol (10% ABV (!), as marked on container) taste or aroma, although, if I really concentrate, a weak gastric warming does occur. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Ends earthy and VERY slightly bitter.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, almost creamy, soft but solid carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 (After deducting 0.25 point for undated container) First black IPA I’ve had with a smokey tinge – interesting counterpoint to the expected sweetness. Not a fan of melon flavors (Boring!) and definitely miss the expected citrus. I can see drinking this occasionally, still searching for the citra hops.

Pours a dark reddish brown/black color. Two finger mocha colored brown head forms, then dissipates until just a thin layer of velvety foam remains on the beer. Lovely lacing remains on the glass as the beer is consumed. Aroma has notes of bright hops that have light citrusy notes, but also some piney, evergreen notes. The malt is roasty, and rich. Perfect for the black IPA style. Taste follows the nose with notes of orange and pine, general citrus, woody, earthy hops, all painted on roasty, rich, even somewhat chocolatey malts. There is moderate bitterness on the back end that really takes on that woodsy character. Its a delicious take on the black IPA style - everything I want from the style. Feel is medium bodied, super smooth, bright carbonation. Bitterness on the back end produces a slight dryness to it.

Overall this is a delicious beer that should most definitely not be a one-off. Not chugging this one ... but man is it incredibly delicious to drink.

From the bottom of the can: "CHEERS MOFOS 12/22/20"

Appearance: It has a black body that shows dark brown as it pours. The head is very large, light khaki, and fluffy. Craters form on the surface as the bubbles pop. The head has very impressive retention and it leaves a nice lace on the glass. Looks perfect.

Aroma: Big notes of garlic with a catty character and a bit of urea. Spicy rye bread character comes in. Smells fresh.

Taste: Up front that catty character comes in with some herbal bread. Towards the middle there is a stronger flavor of what came up front but there is a bit of char. There is a light pine towards the back of the tongue. Woody aftertaste. Much like the aroma it has a nice fresh taste which is pleasant.

Mouthfeel: Medium to medium-high bitterness. The body is about medium textured but it tapers off drier as it finishes. Enjoyable to drink.

Overall: The can states that this is a "TRIPLE DRY-HOPPED WEST COAST TRIPLE BLACK IPA" and that it is "10% alc/vol." The beer has a nice roasted grain bitterness with this herbal garlic and rustic bread flavor and aroma which is nice. The beer does a great job of hiding the alcohol as well. If you enjoy black IPAs of any strength, I would recommend giving this a shot if it is brewed again. I would buy it again.

Everything about this beer screams X3. A dark pour with a heavy road tar smell. The smell, love it or hate it, is what makes it irresistible. Toasty, warm, & quite extreme. A welcomed bitterness is the last thing hitting you before going for the next sip.

Round 5 of night 2, and we have a triple collar beer. I can only assume that the beer’s name is a not-so-subtle way of saying “Fuck 2020” and I’m all for it. I’m happy that BA is working with Black-owned breweries for this beer, it’s a nice way to shine a light on them and give them the attention they deserve

Pours almost entirely pitch black with some ruby glow on the edges and a finger of light brown head that fades to a thin cap and leaves nice lacing

Damn, the nose is unmistakably an IPA even though it’s a black IPA. I’m picking up on notes of pithy grapefruit, overripe melon, piney hops, juicy orange, a touch of roasty coffee, and some dark bready malt

On the front end I’m tasting some pine sap, doughy malt, and caramel sweetness. The swallow brings notes of dark bread, roasted malt, pithy grapefruit, papaya, and oil hops

A medium full body pairs with gentle carbonation resulting in a silky yet bitter beer. Finishes mostly dey with a nice oily roast

Damn, probably the best black IPA I’ve ever had. Love the sentiment behind it, love the collab with Black and Hispanic owned breweries, and love the beer

Dark brown with a garnet hue. A large khaki head quickly settles into a thick crown and wisp that leaves thick lacing.

Lightly smokey dark malt, chocolate and great pine in the aroma.

Great resiny, piney flavor with lightly smoked malts, chocolate and some cola sweetness in the taste. Lingering bitterness in the aftertaste, as there should be.

Medium bodied and smooth with modest carbonation.

Love the mix of flavors in this: resin and pine; great dark malts; and a kiss of sweetness. Love it.
