Poured into a pint glass. Poured black with a nice coffee colored heading.

Smell is immediate of bourbon, some chocolate, coffee, and wood chips.

Taste is what really turned me off to this beer. It was ridiculous with bourbon but also I got hint's of vanilla extract almost to the point where I spit this out.

Mouth is a full bodied decently carbonated beer. but with the ridiculous boozy taste it just didn't feel right on the palate.

Drinkability I would say would be unimpressive. I really couldn't drink another one of these as it is just ridiculously close to drinking vanilla extract straight up.

A corked and caged but unlabelled 750 mL bottle purchased at the North Wales brewpub over a year ago. Shared with sierrags, ffejherb and ksak.

A: The stout is bold and black, nothing gets through the depth. The bottle opened with little evidence of carbonation and the repeated pours did little to change that. Small pools of head managed to emerge but this beer is definitely low on carbonation.

S: The nose is bourbon sweet with vanilla and pepper mixing with the roasted malts and coffee of the stout. A great melding of the two components.

T: The stout is top notch, combining the best of the bourbon and stout without pushing too much bourbon barrel on you. The stout is loaded with coffee, caramel, chocolate and cocoa, burnt toast and chewy nuts. Those flavors mesh well with the vanilla and corn infused bourbon. The bourbon flavors linger on the palate, a nice keepsake of an excellent ale.

M: The smoothness is remarkable. The stout characteristics have merged with the bourbon on a scale that is rarely achieved.

D: A great beer, this is too much for one person to conquer alone. If you like bourbon this stout is for you.

Thanks to egajdzis for sharing this much celebrated, quickly selling bottle.
Appears a pitch black with a small tan head. Light levels of CO2 build up at the bottom of the foamy head. Mild lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of bourbon, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, & roasted nuts.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with highlights of caramel, cocoa, and vanilla.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, smoth, slightly hot, and a bit thin in the finish. Lots of vanilla lingers in this one.

Wow what a stout. Had it in a mug club mug at Iron Hill Media, so could only see the top/head but it looked great. Tan head with some rainbow in the bubbles (booze?). What an amazing balance of vanilla sweetness from the barrel plus the toasty bitterness of the base RIS. A thick beer, but not the most viscous of BA RIS. I could have drank this all day, but after 2x 22oz mugs, it did its work. For $7.50 each, this is quite a deal! Try to find a BA RIS this tasty in a 22oz bomber for this price!

As a note, followed this up with an Eclipse tasting (EC12 and Grand Cru) and neither held a candle to the Iron Hill BA Stout. Good work!

Revised after previous Iphone posting

A- black and opaque with a nice pillowy head that has lasted for half the glass so far and still going. It actually lasted for the whole glass. There was some head left when I reordered.

S - overwhelmingly bourbon with some choc and coffee undertones. The Oakiness comes through a bit as it warms.

T - choc and bourbon. The malts are uderstated compared to the bourbon, but in a good way.

M - full bodied and bready with just the right amount of carbonation.

D - I'd order this again.

(aged in Heaven Hill barrel - on tap at Resurrection Ale House during PBW - served in a snifter)

A: jet black liquid, spongy tan foam... foam gradually falls apart... lil bit of legs in the glass

S: aromas of bourbon, roasted wood and malt, caramelized BBQ'd fats, mild-moderate hit of vinous/bourbon-y booze

T: fantastic flavors! marshmallow, molasses, background vanilla... mellow, elegant roastiness, not all that apparent bitterness... lingering booze with an almost medicinal, grappa-like bitter lull... malt lovers will particularly enjoy the vaguely Milky Way nougat-y foundation... even a plumpness to the booze... altogether it's like an RIS cordial

M: mildly thickish, satiny-ribbony... doughy, though leveling off flat and dry enough not to weigh down and exhaust the palate

O: extremely flavorful, rich and vibrant on the palate... certainly one of the best beers I've had from Iron Hill - well done!

on tap at good dog in philly

Pours a completely black color with a browned frothy head. Cloudy retention and patches of lacing on the glass.

Strong amounts of cocoa powder and chocolate in the nose. Syrupy sweetness, roasted malts, vanilla and bourbon.

An absolute chocolate party up front, cocoa and bittersweet darkness. Similar to hot chocolate powder with caramel and light bourbon. Roasted malts with softer earthiness. Finishes with more sweetness, vanilla, and some bourbon tones.

Full body, mild carbonation, sticky and ultra smooth on the tongue. Drinks really well, a little sweet but still balanced. I'd like to see more of the barrel presence but this was still really tasty.

Had this on nitro-tap at the Wilmington location 1/20/12. Poured into a taller mini pilsner glass (interesting choice).

A: This is pretty much pitch black. Around the curves at the bottom of the glass there might be some reddish hues, but for the most part it's black as night. Love the nitro pour, it gives that nice solid layer of tight bubbled light tan head. This head stuck around the duration of the drink. There wasn't a whole lot of lacing on the glass though.

S: Smells of sweet chocolate, roast coffee, vanilla and bourbon. It smells delicious.

T: The nitro makes this sip so smooth, not the biting bitterness that sometimes comes from force carbonation. I get lots of soft vanilla blended with the bitterness of the roast coffee. Really helps to silence the normal bitterness on this RIS. The close has a little bit a throat warming, but for the most part the ABV is nicely hidden.

M: It's full bodied but the nitro really helps to smooth it out. Totally coats the mouth with vanilla bourbon goodness.

O: Their RIS is already an A beer for me and this one was just a touch better. Still the balanced beer that I remember and love, just made even better. Bravo.

Appearance: Simply put, it pours a black, still body.

Smell: Strong, redolent scent of dark malts and fine bourbon, with notes of chocolate, dark brown sugar, burnt wood, and if you breathe in deep, some dark caramel.

Taste: Dark malts with a distinct chocolate taste. Medium sweetness. All the expected bourbon notes are present: brown sugar, vanilla, and wood. Slight earthy bitterness. A roastiness emerges and lasts till the sweetish, warming finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Nil on the carbonation, but this is a handbottle, so whaddya expect?

Drinkability: There's not really anything to discuss, it's just plain GOOD.

750ml bottle into shaker pint on 10/12. Huge thanks to akorsak for busting out this puppy!

A - Pitch black body with a slim tan ring for a crown, which left a bit of spotty lace. Carbonation? Can't really see into the depths of this black hole.

S - Extremely complex nose with hints of nutty malt, licorice, sweet cream, vanilla, bitter chocolate and coffee. Additionally, some subtle bourbon and oaky/woody notes add a bit of depth to the aroma, and aren't generally as pronounced as other bourbon-aged RISs I've had in the past.

T - Initial flavor is actually quite sweet and cream-like, with vanilla and chocolate notes, as well as coffee making an appearance. Hints of oak and bourbon also make their way into the flavor profile, creating an extremely tasty and complex flavor profile. Very nice!

M - Super smooth body with soft, virtually non-existent carbonation. The velvety texture allows this to glide down the throat effortlessly. However, this could be consequentially quite dangerous, as the 12.5% alcohol content is well-concealed. Finish displays minimal bitterness, but has a warm and sweet effect on the palate.

D - Wow! This is a superior drinkable RIS that really exceeded my expectations. Quite possibly the best RIS I've had to date. I enjoyed this more than...dare I say it... Dark Lord!
