a very light take on the style here, but a good one from iron hill. its been awhile since i had a beer from these guys, and i do like their stuff. the quality here of the brew is high, the recipe is somewhat less compelling, although this is obviously a very patient lager and they have done a nice job with that aspect of it. no darker than amber in the appearance, and the head doesnt stick around long, like a soda being poured. it smells nice though, rich grain, fresh, toasty, and sweet. the yeast isnt as flagrant and vibrant as some, the lagering here seems slow and long. none of the usual banana notes, mellowed way down. hints of raisin and molasses, but the beer is a lot lighter than others in its field. well made, but safe to me. not enough good dark lagers out there though, and this one finds a nice balance between complexity and drinkablilty, and is super dry at the end, and more bitter than any of its peers. better than some of the other traditional styles i have had from these guys, but i think they are at their best when they are bucking tradition and experimenting a little bit...

Served in a Weizen glass.
A: Beautiful clear orange-amber with a half-finger, off-white, creamy head that diminished to a film and lasted forever. Nice lacing.
S: Toasted malt and subtle hops. Appetizing.
T: Moderate to high sweetness and light bitterness. Wonderful toasted and chewy malt quality. Subtle roasted and chocolate notes too.
M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Smooth and crisp.
O: This is one of my favorite Iron Hill brews on tap at this time. It looks beautiful in the glass they serve it in, and the flavor is unique and delicious.

On tap at the brewery.
A clear caramel colored beer with a frothy head that settles down quickly, good lacing remains. Big time toasty malt aroma follows through in the taste, which has excellent toastiness and a chewy bready malt character as well as prominent sweetness. Sweeter than most examples of this style but still very tasty. A light touch of floral hoppiness in the finish cleans things up a bit. The finish is dry enough to counterbalance the sweetness as well. Medium-high carbonation, medium-thin bodied, easy drinking and refreshing. Crisp and clean.
I really enjoyed this one and found it to a nice antidote to my more usual steady diet of hop bomb IPAs and enormous imperial stouts. A simple tasty beer in an understated, underrated style.

On tap at Iron hill Lancaster on 1/16/10.
A - Deep amber/brown body with two fingers of beige froth on top, which settled to a bubbly patch of foam and yielded some thick lace.
S - Muted nose with a faint roasted malt presence and a slight nutty character. There's also a hint of earthy hop notes reminiscent of tree bark or dry autumn leaves, as well as a mild astringent character.
T - Roasty malt up front with a hint of chocolate and brown sugar sweetness. Faint coffee notes emerge in the backend, while slight earthy notes add a touch of bitterness to the flavor. Finishes with a big malty ending, suggesting caramel, toasted grains, chocolate and roast.
M - Medium bodied with a smooth texture that's not ultra creamy but not too watery either. Finishes with a somewhat dry, mild astringency on the palate.
D - Solid dunkel lager with a pleasant roasted malt character and pretty complex malt profile overall.

I had this on tap the other night with dinner. It was presented in a standard pint glass, dark with ruby highlights and a thin, sthicky white head. The nose was toasted malts-sweet and a bit of smoke. The flavor was sweet and then the raost came in. There were hints of smoke and chocolate. The finish was clean. The beer was medium bodied and very quaffable, a nice complement to my veal.

I had this a few nights ago at the Brewpub adjacent to F&M. Served cold in a pils glass.
A - Dark bronze/med brown w/ full fluffy cream colored head
S - Slightly musky odor w/ deep breadiness in the nose- German yeasty aroma w/ mineral dry odor.
M - A dry, highly carbonated feel which is crisp and refreshing malty in places w/ a light fruity tang.
T - The flavor is decent, but not as full as I would expect from a Dunkel. The taste as in the smell is malty with subtle breadiness, but the highly carbonated feel strips the flavor slightly. The yeast flavor is authentic and has the basics to satisfy for subtle roastiness.
D -- An above average beer, yet slightly high in Co2 which detracts for me as it is gassy, but still a refreshing lager and has nice compatability with the portabella sandwich with roasted peppers and provalone.

A pilsner glass served at the Iron Hill in Lancaster.
A: The dunkel is a darker black color, think dark chocolate and you get the idea. A tan head atop the darkness adds a nice contrast.
S: The nose is chocolate and caramel malts, grainy with a nice cereal element. The depth of the nose if fleeting, never getting out of hand.
T: The dark caramel is velvety sweet on the palate, clearly the focal point of the lager. The caramel flavor retains is graininess, with biscuit flourishes and lots of cereal. The grain content lingers in the palate, continually releasing the caramel flavors.
M: This is a good take on the style, lots of dark malt flavors without a strong alochol presence.
D: A few glasses of this with some sausages would be heavenly. Nice to see some German offerings matched against the Belgians.
