appearance: Poured into a weizen glass, a .25" white head is produced, and then recedes most of the way. The beer is straw golden in color.

smell: Wheat malt, grassy noble hops, light tropical fruits (mango), and a moderate candylike sweetness.

mouthfeel: The carbonation is pretty low for the style, somewhere around the upper parts of the low range, which is somewhat detracting...almost making the beer seem stale or watery. The body is a lighter medium, just about right.

taste: Pretty darn wheaty, but cleanly, with a touch of honeylike sweetness. Light hop flavor and bitterness. A little grassiness is evident.

drinkability: Though the lack of carbonation bothers me and gives the drinkability a hit, it is still damn drinkable.

Received from loren01 in a trade, thanks. A best by month of May is notched on the label. I'm not so sure about this one being listed as a kristal weizen.

Picked up a 5 liter mini keg of this last summer and only this spring got around to trying it. I was surprised as it has a nice golden yellow color and nice wheat aroma. It pours into a cold stein with a good head that if kept under co2 in the keg is quite nice. It has a wonderful full body and aside from having a slight touch of sourness it is quite drinkable. I only wish I had bought more of these at that price-it was cheap and it seems they no longer brew it. A Shame

A: pours yellow golden with less than a finger of off-white foam which immediately falls to a sheet of the same with bordered rim. excellent clarity. No lace.
S: Sweet and malty with some banana esters and some wheat tones. Really nice for the style.
T: Again, sweet, with malts and wheat tones. Again, some banana esters. Some corn tone as well.
M: Light bodied with moderately light carb with a semi dry finish.
O: Good beer. Really sessionable, would love to see this one in a can.

From a twelve ounce brown bottle - Pours a light straw color that is clear and without much of a head. Smells of wheat grains and light malts. First sip is tangy with the wheat present but not over the top. Not much of a hop presence here but that's ok. Slightly under carbonated.

While the beer looks fine, it has absolutely no smell to it. The esters aren't subtle, they just aren't there.

It does have a smooth taste and rates higher on my drinkability, but I found no weizen flavors at all. The beer just tasted more like a simple amber ale with a decent body and white head. Nothing distinctive other than it left a real thick film on the empty glass.

While I can drink a few with no problem (and I have), when someone asks me what is special about it, the most they will get from me is a shrug.

A 12 oz. bottle of "the slayer" into a pint glass.

Pours a clean, straw-golden ale with a decently retained off-white head. No lacing is left behind, but the carbonation is definately turned on. Aroma has wheat and lots of spice with a hint of orange peel. Reminds me a bit of Blue Moon in the smell department; it's strong, but not overpowering.

The taste contains a nice blend of vanilla and honey notes with a touch of banana, spice, and graham cracker. Mouthfeel is smooth and light-bodied with a good, flavorful finish. This beer prides itself in its "non-bitterness" and surprisingly (as a man who loves his hops), it works. I'd have this beer again for sure, and if I were every fishing in Montana, I'd hope to have a sixer on hand.

12 oz bottle Clear golden beer, with a good sized, bubbly/frothy white head. malty, lagerish aroma, toffeeish tones to the malt. Malty flavour mainlly finished quite sour, not sure if this is how it is meant to be, some faint wheatyiness. Not too bad on the palate. NOt a great drinker for me, the sour aspect just didnt seem right

From a bottle this poured a light gold with little head and therefore no lacing. In short, appearance was lacking. Nose was was corn and hops. Mouthfeel was light and a bit watery. Flavor was citrus and hops. A relatvely poor example of what is usually in Germany a good beer. A very average beer.

A 12 oz bottle from Liquid Solutions.

A: The kristal weizen is absolutely kristal. There is no indication of any sediment, haze or gunk. The color is a deeper yellow, almost urine-like in its sheen. The head is practically nonexistent.

S: The aroma is a grainy malt scent that is underscored by a marked malt sweetness, not quite weizen-ester sweetness but more of a cereally sweet biscuit.

T: The ale, like most American kristals and hefes, is more of an American pale wheat ale. The wheat malts are concentrated enough that there is an element of sweetness imparted by them. There are no cloves or bananas here, just a small wheat body.

M: The mouthfeel is not inoffensive, supplying a wheat body and a slight hoppy bitterness.

D: The ale has a nice flavor but I find that it is a little to bland to really enjoy.

Bayern's Troutslayer (great name!) pours a hazy golden body beneath a short head of creamy white foam. The head retention is fairly good, and it leaves some small spots of lace at the outset of the glass. The nose is sweetish with wheaty malt and a suggestion of floral hops in the background. In the mouth it's medium bodied and creamy-smooth with a moderate carbonation. The flavor is as the nose suggests, with wheaty malt dominating, and backed by a gentle dose of yeasty fruitiness and some very mild grassy hop flavors. The bitterness is restrained, and it's softly sweet but still balanced. It finishes fairly short and dry with just a touch of lingering maltiness and dull hop flavor. Overall, quite a nice, drinkable beer. I was expecting a standard pale ale - nowhere on the bottle does it suggest that it's a kind of wheat beer, and this was a pleasant surprise. Enjoyable.

Pours a two finger white head that fades to a ring leaving no lace. Almost cloudy color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Slight malty nose. Starts balanced malts and hops are equal, finish is slightly hoppy. This is not a kristal weizen, previous reviewer must have gotten a different batch - at this point no head is left. $1.30 for a 12oz bottle from Liquid Solutions Tigard, Or.

CAUTION-- THERE IS A TROUT SLAYER BY BAYERN, AND A TROUT SLAYER BY BIG SKY, BOTH IN MISSOULA MONTANA! This one is a Krystalweizen, the Big Sky is a Pale Ale Wheat.

Although I don't find much flavor in this beer, it's very drinkable and especially over most of the general-fodder US commercial beers, because of the nice light-carbonation.

Pours a very light near-clear yellow. Mine poured with a nice foamy white head that stayed around for quite a while, with a nice nose and interesting taste.

The taste is very light-- interesting but not exciting for long. There's a light malt taste, very little hops except maybe a light hops-flower hint. But if you're looking for a nice lightly carbonated and lightly flavored beer to drink in gallon-quantities, this is definitely your beer on a hot day. There's a light fruity-sweet tone in the taste, so just imagine the alcohol as a substitute for the acid and call it lemonade!

A: Golden pilsner-looking. Very light carbonation, head disappeared quickly. Little lacing.

S: Mild. Aroma of sweet malt, lightly estery. No real standout characteristic.

T: Malty, mostly. Sweet. In a blind taste test, I would have said "lager" rather than the "golden ale" that they prefer to call it. Malt up front, slight SLIGHT hop bitterness. Esters (fruity) are present, but very subdued, only mildly citrusy.

M: Light-bodied. Very scarce carbonation. Almost flat.

D: Pretty easy to drink, but a lot of mild and somewhat sweet American golden-colored beers are like that. It's more flavorful than a macro pilsner, and was somewhat refreshing after a day of fishing in the 100+ degree Montana heat. Still, not a terribly flavorful beer.

This is a kristal weizen? ummm.... ok. Into a mug, pours a yellow gold, not really any head or lacing. Aroma is weak, a little malty and a tad bit o straw-like hops. Taste has a grainy malt quality, not really like wheat, more like the stalk or something, a little funky like that, and some hop to boot. Mouth is not too carbonated, medium body, but dispite being kind of wierd and a little boring, very refreshing and quite drinkable. Also, kudos for a friggin cool name.

Krystal Weizen, eh?

Pours straw color with white pillowy head. Looks good.

Aroma is not typical weizen, much more malty. Mouthfeel is medium and smooth.

Taste is almost Blonde Bock-ish. I'm not getting a lot of clove, vanilla, bannana. I'm guessing they did not use a typical weissen yeast but more of an american ale yeast with a cleaner taste.

Overall it is very drinkable but not really sure it fits my idea of a krystal weizen.

A: Had this on tap at Mackenzie River Pizza Co. I have had this many times however, I was addicted to this a couple of summers ago. Poured into standard pint glass a light amber color with large frothy white head.
S: Smell is not too complex but this is my favorite part about this beer. Smells very sweet, not so much malty but more like honey. Not sure if this beer is brewed with honey or not, but thats sure what it smell like
T: Same as smell really, though I prefer the smell better. Taste is just sweet with not much hop aftertaste
M: Very easy drinking and smooth
D: Goes down way to easily on a hot summer day when you are outdoors
