From tap at Bayern. The color is a dark, murky black/brown that in the light looks a dark caramel. Light colored foam is slow to recede and clings to glass. The smell is an aroma heavy on malt and backdrop of fruit. Taste is excellent, Bayern is really good at providing a tasteful brew without being overly bearing or gimmicky - almost reserved in the taste of malt, some banana, and other fruits. Drinks very similar to a Rochefort 10 without quite the complexity, and almost half the ABV.

Carbonation is present but does not overbear - the mouth feel is superb and never grows harsh as you identify the flavors. Overall a terrific product that is often a first pick from this Brewery when their Doppelbock is out of season.

2009 backlog. 12 oz bottle. I smell bananas!!!! Pours a nice root beer brown with a medium head and decent lacing. Tastes of bananas, roasted malt.

It could just be that I am extremely thirsty after hiking in Yellowstone National Park all day, but this beer really impressed me. I had been forced to drink other inferior beers until I found this one in the store's cooler. Love it!

Look : Chestnut brown color, 70% opaque, allowing a little bit of light to leak through. The head starts very large, off-white to yellow colored, 3 fingers. It leaves lace in great webs on the sides of the glass. After the head recedes it leaves a mossy layer of cream on the top.

Smell : Quite a bit of caramel, some dark roast malts, rye, caraway, and dark wheat. A little bit of brown sugar. Medium volume.

Taste : A bit washed out with some dirty wheat and rye, some flavorless clove, ending with some pasty baked malts. The aftertaste is the only true mark of a Dunkelweizen. A bit of alcohol burn/antiseptic taste towards the finish.

Feel : Light, watery, morphing into a little bit of medium body creaminess. The end is really unremarkable but if I had to say something maybe semi-dry.

Overall : I wouldn't buy this again, just not overly impressed with either of the Bayern bears I've had. Cool label, a less than great beer. Pass.

The beer is bad ass. Goes down smooth and it's an easy drinker.

Appearance - Pours slightly hazy and copper brown in color. The head us off-white and peaks at a finger's width before dying down in fair time. Breaks down to a thin, broken layer of suds.

Smell - Aroma hits on some darkened wheat, grain and a touch of grassy hop.

Taste - Follows the nose. Wheat, touches of caramel and a light grassy hop. Faint lemon. Finishes somewhat clean.

Mouthfeel - Light in body with bitey nation. Crisp, mostly dry finish.

Overall - Dunkelweizen? Hardly. I should have known better to buy when I saw the label saying it was a "Dark Heff Ale". This is the "dunkel" equivalent of Widmer's "Hefe"; that is to say, it's a sad Americanized version of in the style. It's a fair, easy drink, but nothing I'd buy again.
