A pleasant aroma of subtle dark roasted malt and caramel greeted me from the glass. Dark brown/black in color with a light brown head. Sweet caramel and hints of wheat came through and really surprised me. Mouthfeel was interesting in that it was quite chewy... don't know a better way to describe it. Very nice.

You rarely get to sample a beer as finely crafted as this. Dark, opaque reddish brown, phat creamy tan head. Wafting combination of hefe (banana, clove), old ale (dark fruits, cherry, nuts), and porter (roasted grains) aromas. Tastes are the same combination with some caramelly malt sweetness appearing. Delivered via a medium bodied, yet velvety mouthfeel. 9.5% Alc.? Could've fooled me. Staggeringly drinkable. A big thanks to my beer friend who's always watching my back!

Veyr different for a wheat beer.. no real head formed.. semed odd for a wheat beer.. smelled of currants and raisins and plums... very dark almost opaque black.. it was smooth yet fruity for a wheat beer and the body very thick. A very warming ale that was just different for this wheat beer geek.

Originally sampled on 17 May 2003. Looks like a porter, but doesn't taste like one! it has a slightly fruity aroma w/ a flavor of tart cherries & brown bread. It is velvety on the tongue w/ a slightly sweet finish. This is a great brew. Thanks herbjones

I just love a brewing operation that’s willing to give me their technical information. High Point really opens the kimono on their beers… Only 20 IBU’s with a starting gravity over 1.080!!?? Man…

The Winter Wheat pours Imperial Stout black, with a spritzy, fizzy head of the shortest-lived bubbles this side of cola. Actually, this beer looks quite a bit like flat coke that went strong on the syrup… A big caramelly, molasses nose with hints of either dates or dried plums in addition to cloves, chocolate and toasted malts is a welcoming start to the non-visual attributes of this beer. Is that a bit of smoke too? Yup, a sip confirms that there is indeed a hint of phenolic smokiness threading through the cinnamon, raisins, figs molasses, chocolate, cloves and bananas. Damn this stuff is complex… I love the fact that it starts off tasting almost like an under-hopped Imperial Stout, but then the wheat beer yeast kicks in and takes us on a new road, which serves as a magical shortcut between Munich and St. Petersburg. The alcohol in this beer, though it can be felt eventually, can’t be tasted any more than in a 5% Helles. The shockingly low hopping rate manages to account for any molecule of maltose headed from the “balanced” side of the equation to the “cloying” side. This beer really displays finesse—it captures all that’s good about hefeweizen and Imperial Stout/Porter without losing balance, complexity or my interest. Great beer…

Surprisingly, this beer poured a very dark, almost black color, but when held up to the light some ruby tinges shown through. The light coffee colored head thinned out pretty quick. Nice roasty aroma with fermented fruitiness there, along with coffee and caramel. The taste is interesting – fruity sweet, complex and somewhat malty. Does not show the typical wheat characteristics, like sourness, bananas or cloves – the sweetness seems to overwhelm any of that. Beer is blended nicely and is very flavorful. It pushes the sweetness envelope for me, but tasty and drinkable nevertheless.

Rich malt and blackberry jam in the nose. Deep dark (almost purple) opeque look with a pale/tanish head that settles quickly into a constant sheen with a 1/8 inch outer ring of lace on the glass. Medium smooth mouth. Initial sweet taste is cut by a sharp dry hop knife. Also in the finish there is a apple tartness left on a faintly dry tongue. This is a different kind of beer. You really have to think about what you are tasting.Rich-sweet-tart-cocoa-fruit beer. Needless to say there is alot going on in that bottle. I need another bottle to catch that again...

Appearance: Pours an incredibly dark brown that appears to be black at first glance. Completely opaque, with absolutely no light penetration. It's brown head starts out an inch thick and fades away to a small ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Has the traditional banana, clove, and bubblegum covered by a heavy layer of roasted malt, chocolate, peppery spiciness, and dark fruits. Stunning in it's complexity, with a touch of raw alcohol just under the surface.

Taste: Rich and tart with many layers of complexity and flavors. The expected banana and clove are there, only to be supplanted by rich chocolate, caramel, and coffee notes. Peeling back another layer reveals a bunch of fruity flavors: apple, plum, black currant, and raison. Another layer is the lightly toasted, biscuity grain flavor. Wrapped around all of those is a steady but restrained spiciness which has a lively, peppery touch. Amazing...

Mouthfeel: Medium in body with a low amount of carbonation...I'd like to see a bit more. Finishes with a spicy shot of alcohol.

Drinkability: Damn good for it's strength. While the name implies that it's primarily a cold weather brew, I could put down a few of these in any season.

I think the head size and it's retention and the lack of carbonation have something to do with it's age and the long trip it made to my doorstep.

This beer poured into the glass a dark port wine color, deep dark and ruby/purple colored and when held to the light very little passed through the glass, just on the edges you could see some red highlights. I swear it looked like dark grape juice with red highlights. The head the it produced was a medium tan/brown color that produced a thick head that lasted only a moment then faded to a thin ring and covering on the surface. No lace seemed to be present. The aromas that came from this beer were big and sweet – dark fruits, sweet malts, apples, caramel, floral hops and some spices. The tastes that came from this “wheat” beer were big and surprising. I tasted creamy chocolates, dark fruits, apples, sweet malts, spices, some alcohol , wheat grains and some ash dryness. This beer was creamy and full of fruit flavors. I really enjoyed it. It through me a little, because the colors, flavors, and tastes were different from what I am used to in a wheat beer. Excellent. Nice and warming.

An extremely dark brown pour with a decent sized tannish head that will leave lace all over the glass. Aroma of sweet fruits, yeast, wheat, chocolate, and even some hops in there. A mass of aromas that causes a battle between your nose and mouth. Your nose will not want you to drink it, just smell it.

There is an army of sweet fruits and malts to start you off on the first course. Next come burnt coffee and chocolate flavors to please the roasty side of you. Then a toasty aftertaste comes in and shows off a bit of alcohol. You are left with a lightly buttered wheat toast with a tinge of alcohol on your tongue, and it sits there for quite some time. The body is pretty full with a nice smooth mouthfeel. A good warming effect as you take this one down.

This beer is like a Kamaeleon in taste and smell. It just has such a smooth transition from flavor to flavor; smell to smell. Kind of like Willy Wonka's magical gum that turns the girl into the blueberry. Well, I didn't turn into wheat toast, so looks like High Point has worked out the problems in their magical potion.

Have heard many a good thing about this bier. Let's see!

This bier came out the color of dark chocolate, with hardly a trace of any light being able to penetrate through. The head was fine and creamy, yet not too big, with not much lacing, either.

The aroma was rich and sweet, immediately putting me into a Doppelbock mode! Chocolate and toffee, as well as suggestions of dark fruit, were all present. Quite appetizing!

Mouthfeel was top-notch! More than medium bodied, this Wheat is trying to get pumped and be a full-bodied bier! Silky smooth on the tongue, with just a pinch of bubbly/foamy carbonation. Nothing at all to detract from the sensation, though!

Toffee and caramel flavors, malty sweetness, and dark fruit flavors combine in a rich cornucopia of pleasures on the tongue. The 9.5% abv, though hidden in the flavor profile, does make itself known with a welcome warmth in the belly!

A far as drinkability goes, I may not drink many in a session, but I give it a 5 since I'd probably not at any time turn one down! A big-time thnx goes out to Davo, who was kind enough to give me a bottle. Vielen Dank, und Prosit!!

Very, very dark with only a few ruby glimmers of ruby shining through. Coarse head never really piled high, but when it was just a thin layer on top of the liquid it looked quite pretty. It was multicolored with the thinnest portion the color of and around the edge it was closer to the color of a medium-light Cajun roux. Aromas of malted wheat, black cherries, bananas, and the smallest bit of alcohol show off this beer’s richness and finesse. Very smooth in the mouth. The perfect carbonation gives this a velvety mouth feel. Malt flavors abound, and mixed in are milk chocolate, cocoa, and the mildest charcoal flavor ever. You only notice the high alcohol when your mouth and throat warm slightly after swallowing. The finish is moderately short, but long enough to allow the individual flavors to fade away one at a time. I don’t see how this beer could have been much better.

After I thought I wasn’t going to be able to find any more this season I was lucky enough to find it at BeerFan’s store.

9.5%! I can hardly believe it. Pours mud under a thin bonnet of malted milk. Like eating a banana split next to a roaring hardwood campfire the nose is a sublime melange of banana, cherries, vanilla, chocolate and smoked malts. A man could go to slavering before he even takes a sip. More treats for the buds as I quaff this chocolate covered banana explosion that's somewhat held in check by what has to be--but is not perceived as--a huge dose of balancing hops. A thin wisp of smokiness hangs out like a middle-school drug pusher. Are there smoked malts in this brew? There has got to be. What an ambrosial beer. Unique and tasty! If Ramstein gets national distribution, this one will become an American classic, for sure!

Package: 12oz. bottle, no ABV listed. White label with purple border. Kitschy gothic letters spelling “Ramstein.” “Enjoy by month notched” marked between April and May but no year denoted. Label recommends storing at 35º-45º and serving at 40º. Neck label describes brew style. Busy but reasonably informative.

Cost: $8.99 6-pack at Gary's

Presentation: Imperial pint glass at 45º. ( I thought 40º serving recommendation was too cold).

Appearance: The beer's only weak area. Some gunsmoke. Generated little head, which dissipated quickly. Color was a rich brown-black, with an almost opaque, stout-like body. Large clumps of sediment. Unremarkable.

Smell: Achtung! All of the promised elements are present: fruity apple, clove, vanilla, smoky chocolate, and caramely malt. Bouquet is surprisingly un-volatile for its high ABV, but complex and full.

Taste: This is where this beer kicks into overdrive. Added to the aromas are subtle hints of cinnamon, bananas Foster, and dark black curranty fruits. Almost no hint of the claimed 9.5% ABV. Sweetness is present, but in a toasted-malt context and is by no means cloying. This beer never forgets that it's a wheat beer. Impressive depth of flavor, carrying through the middle to a strong, lasting finish that dries out.

Mouthfeel: Very creamy, smooth, and luxurious; but never loses its crisp edge. Carbonation is fine and consistent throughout. It puzzles me why it didn’t generate a better head.

Drinkability: Astoundingly drinkable! For something akin to an Imperial Stout, this goes down like a session beer. It is satisfying but not so filling that you can’t have several in succession (as long as you’re not driving!).

A beer worth savoring that challenges you not to drink it like water! Would accompany strong cheeses and other hearty appetizers very well. When High Point first opened, I knew one of the brewers, who invited me to try some of the beers. At the time, I thought they were good, but not stand-outs. It's been sometime since I’ve been in touch with this friend or had any Ramstein brews, but I was cooking short ribs braised in wheat beer, so I bought a six of the Classic. Intrigued by the Winter Wheat, I bought it, not knowing it was seasonal with a 9.5% ABV. Time to get in touch with my friend again!

Backwash: The quintessential Q-ship. The beer equivalent of a Mercedes 300SEL 6.3; old-world craftsmanship, silky smooth, with some serious torque under the hood.

Midnight brown with some slight ruby at the bottom of the glass. Topped by a frothy tan head, which breaks down a bit quick. Aroma of dark fruits, smoke, a bit of cocoa, and at the end, a sweet apple scent . Across the tongue, black currant and assorted fruits roll richly and slickly. Sweet but by no means cloying. Near 10% alcohol unnoticeale except for a trace in the aftertaste. Scarily drinkable. Hard to find this year, but worth the hunt.

Pours a naturally cloudy, very dark brown body with a huge creamy tan head that holds exceptionally well and leaves nice lace. The aroma is sweetish and fruity (berries, cherry) with a lightly smoky phenolic in the background. The body is medium, and the mouthfeel is full and creamy. The flavor offers some distinct caramelized sugars, a soft chocolatey note, a touch of alcohol, and some dull bubblegum. It finishes fairly short and lightly sweet. Although it's not a complex beer, it is quite flavorfull and extremely enjoyable. Highly recommended and well worth seeking out.

Dark Brown, almost black with a medium tan colored head. The smell is of cocoa and reminds me of banana nut bread. The flavor also reminds me of banana nut bread, with a smooth, but present alcohol finish. This is a very solid doppelbock and I will head to the brewery first chance I get - I wanna see these guys at work. Really drinkable for a strong complex beer. Proud to be from Jersey.
