Another review from the pile of bottles shot up in 2014.

Brown ale pours a brown color. Tan head 2/3" deep, good retention. Aroma hits you in the nuts, no wait, the aroma is of nuts and brown malt. Hits the requisite "earthy" descriptor for a brown ale.

Taste is rich, its not a thin brown ale, nor is it a sludge viscosity level in the mouth feel. Hits the right middle ground in that regard. Not overly roasted nor excessive. Mildly hopped but prolly higher than old ass BJCP style guidelines. Could do without the remnants of dark fruit and sweetness on the back end. Just give me something to chew on with this style of beer.

Its one of those beers that started out strong and impressive, but by the end of 22oz of it, I was tired of it. Would recommend smaller portions of the beer, its a good one for splitting simply out of fatigue. It doesn't get more drinkable as it warms, brings out those notes I wasn't big on similar to a Russian Imperial Stout.

22 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass

A: Pours dark, chestnut brown good amount of lacing and carbonation, tan colored head, no retention.

A: Roasted nuttiness, light coffee, toffee, light chocolate, cinnamon, dark fruit like dates, lots of aroma, roasted malts, brown sugar, smells very nice.

T: Roasted nuttiness, dates, brown sugar, cinnamon, pepper/spice, light bitterness with roasted malts, toffee, coffee, the complexity is surprising, very good.

M: Light bodied with a good amount of carbonation, dry nutty finish.

O: A very tasty brown ale, not as hoppy as it is described on the bottle, but it's the most complex brown ale I've tasted, lots of flavor, I'd buy this again especially if it was available in six-packs, a great fall beer.

Bottle poured into a Bear Republic Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours rich brown with a frothy tan head that settles to nice layer and leaves a little light lacing.

S: Dried fruit, dark sugar, molasses, earthy, roasty toasty malt, and hints of coffee.

T: Dark fruit, plum, raisin, cherry, dark sugar, molasses, earthy, bready roasty toasty malt, a little coffee, and some subtle floral notes.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: There are some flavors in here I don't typically prefer in a brown ale, but they work very well together in this one. Really solid brew.

Enjoyed from the bomber in a snifter. This Beefy little brown ale pours a
deep dark muddled brown color with very nice head of off white foam that subsides
to a thick ring, subtle wispy pool, and very nice lacing. nose of toasted malts, toasted
nutty malts, chocolate, herbal hops, caramel, light coffee. Flavors follow the nose but exceed in
flavor profile with coffee and medium dark chocolate with a nut laden background touched with a
rich herbal hop blast that keep this brew lively and in check with the style. Excellent mouth feel;
smooth yet lightly crisp with lightly prickly carbonation that finishes roasted and lightly hopped.

Overall one of the better browns I have tried in recent years.

Cheers

On tap:
Very dark brown but definitely brown in natural light. Poured lightly with a half cm off-white head that just stared at me as I typed this up. There is a bit of lacing.

The nose seems nutty, but I definitely get the adjuncts as well. Almost comes across as a soda.

Taste is sweet, but in a controlled way. More molasses notes to me than brown sugar. There's a nutty background, but the flavor seems to come more from the sweetening agents. A little tart zing darts in and out in some sips as the beer transitions to the end, which includes a little more oily nut flavor, a little raisin, and some balancing bitterness that is way late to the party.

The very light bitterness lingers a little with the skin of a nut resin for the end feel. Fairly full body for a brown, aided by the sugary additions.

Enjoyable as a savory/sweet beer. Not sure it pulls off a straight dessert beer, as the flavors are from sweet ingredients, but aren't overpoweringly sweet. I'd like to try the base beer, actually.

L: crystal-clear, brownish garnet colored liquid, topped with a cottony pad of sudsy foam

S: piney, herbal hops beam out on top, hint of a soapy, peppery perfume on the edges... getting mostly chocolate malt, a toasty pale, a possibly a tiny nip of dark sugar and/or campfire carmelization... the bready sweet grain is dense, but not well-defined... overall, not all that potent a smell

T: toasty and dark grain atop, with a subtle underbelly of those smoky caramel notes... thin layer of caramel riding out the back end, faint whisper of nutty nougat develops out of that in the aftertaste, which is nicely dry

F: light and clean on top, delicate molasses-y slide under on the river bed... thin viscosity, likely due to the adjuncts, but enough curve... seems like a bit of spicy warmth lingers

O: very nice, robust brown ale flavor in there, just a bit subdued, hushed... very drinkable and worth investing in a sixer

This one pours a burnt orange like the hard sugar shell of a Creme Brule. The head is light tan and rich and settles out in a reasonable amount of time leaving a light, erratic lacing up top and dense curtain like lacing at the bottom.

The nose is a complex set of hoppiness, malt, alcohol, chocolate, nutmeg, vanilla, butter, and grass. Very complex and extremely fragrant.

The taste is a fantastically rich and delicious brown ale. Considering the ingredients it is not too sweet nor too dry. A just right balance of malt ande hops with a full flavor with hints of black pepper, nutmeg, vanilla, chocolate, alcohol, camphor with subtle maltiness on the finish that is then dominated by a bitter hop finale.

The mouthfeel is rich and allows the flavors to cascade over the palate instead a flood of confusing flavors the flavors reveal themselves in sequence.

Overall this is an exceptional beer, I really love the flavors and the finish combined with the nose to create an exceptional beer drinking experience. A proper tribute indeed.
