Picked this one up as part of a variety 6-pack at Bine & Vine, landing me 10 percent off overall. Some friends had raved about this one, so I was thrilled to finally see it in stores. Can read, “Hop pickers of old used canvas shovels to move their harvest. We added overflowing scoops of Mosaic, Meridian and Denali to this IPA to create huge tropical and citrus notes. Enjoy a shovel's worth!” Would not be able to pick out Meridian or Denali, but Mosaic is my favorite hop. Hoping to land in the 4.20-4.30 range.

Poured a gold, hazy color with 2-to-3 fingers of rocky white head. Could see some bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. World-class spiderweb foamy lacing. Almost perfect foamy retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled mango, dish soap, overripe tangerine, Mosaic, pineapple, grapefruit rind, floral perfume, hints of blueberry, leafy herbal and stone fruit. (Smell - 3.75)

Tasted much maltier than I thought it would be. Got rye spices, lemon, iced tea, bitter mango peel, tangerine, red grapefruit rind, pineapple, berries, leafy herbal, passion fruit, peach, guava and lime. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Long finish. (Feel - 3.75)

Nowhere near as good as I thought it was going to be, but still pretty good. I think I overrated it overall. (Overall - 4.00)

Pours paler than expected, it’s slightly hazy. Piney, citrus peel, and lemon cookie aromas burst forth. The first drink is a spicy and piney. Malt bill for this beer includes wheat and rye. Very satisfying.

Pours a golden color bottle conditioned so some sediment floating about. Head is nice and dense two fingers off white and falls oh so slow with great lacing.

Aroma is nice lots of hops tropical and citrus mix with a touch of spice thrown in for good measure. Very inviting ans hoppy aroma.

Taste is pretty much on par with the nose. Citrus grapefruit bitterness along with tangerine, pineapple and orange notes. Some dankness with touches of pine and spice like notes in the finish.

Mouthfeel is only medium with just enough malt to hold all the hops.

Overall a good brew, probably one of the better commercially Mosaic hops beers I have had.

Poured out a clear, golden-orange color with a small, white head of bubbly foam. It smelled of sweet tropical fruits mostly grapefruit and pineapple. It tasted tropical with sweet caramel and a bitter, piney hop bite.

Look: It pours golden and clear with a white head. Head retention is moderate.

Smell: The aromas are highlighted by citrus up front with tropical fruit and mango. Other aromas include low levels of rye.

Taste: The flavors are highlighted by rye, tropical fruit, mango, and citrus. There are low levels of bread and very low levels of wheat in the background.

Feel: The texture is smooth with a moderate body. The bitterness his high with a finish that is long lasting.

Overall, this is a hop forward beer with a nice background support from the rye to give it a complex flavor.

Tasty stuff. Drinkability high. Tropical bready hops, crisp bite, fairly dry. Balanced and nothing too complex, which is surprising considering some the unusual hops involved.
I did notice after sipping this for a while, there's an interesting perfumey-fruit note. Grew on me a bit more after the single bottle was finished via my pint glass.
Just a good IPA to grab after being out in some heat. Or with a burger or something.
And since this was purchased in TX, can anybody confirm if Bear Republic suddenly distributes here again?
It's always on shelves, yet last year it was confirmed they halted distribution to TX due to their severe California drought. Did that all reverse?

Brief impressions from a bottle:

IPA. 7.50% ABV. Hoped with "overflowing scoops of Mosaic, Meridian and Denali."

APPEARANCE: Half body, half head. The former clear, clean, filtered, and of pale copper colour; the latter white, billowing, and somewhat soft.

Appears adequately carbonated. Not unique or special, but appealing within the style.

AROMA: Tropical fruit dominates. Mango, citrus peel, tangerine, subtle blueberry (Mosaic), pale malts, bilberry.

Appealing, showcasing Mosaic's subtlety wonderfully well. I'm eager to try it.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE: Matches the aroma. The bursts of blueberry & bilberry are the highlight, but the subsidiary tropical fruit flavours complement them nicely. Pale malts keep it balanced; perceived bitterness is low for an IPA.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, well-carbonated, medium-bodied, and somewhat refreshing. Complements the taste well and is true to style. Well-executed.

OVERALL: Bear Republic quietly brews some of the best expressions of the oversaturated style, and Hop Shovel is no exception. So many breweries are flocking to Mosaic hops for their popularity (and subsequent marketing potential), but many fail to showcase it well. Bear Republic succeeds, committing to the hop and supporting it with a well-chosen cohort of Meridian and Denali. This bottle was from my first six-pack...it certainly won't be my last. I'm not sure I prefer this over Racer 5, but if a beer induces that kind of hesitation, you know it's damn solid. A must-try for any IPA fan, even if there's room for further intricacy and depth of flavour.

Considering it is brewed with hop varieties--Meridian and Denali--that I have never heard of, along with the now-ubiquitous Mosaic, I thought this would be a lot more interesting than what it is: a run of the mill beer with the typical vaguely piney-fruity-resiny-combined-with-sweet-note-from-malt combo that is in 1,000 other IPAs. Also too boozy. Nothing distinctive here, no tantalizing flavors or aromas, why a major craft outlet would bother releasing such mediocrity I don't know.
