On tap at Newhall Refinery in Newhall, CA.

Pours a hazy gold with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, and grapefruit juice aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest, grapefruit juice, and slight pine needle flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Serving type: on tap.

a couple of new and tasty beers from bear republic have shown up in the market lately, and for that i am grateful. its been awhile since i had anything new from them, still rocking it, thats for sure. this might be a little on the generic side, at least these days since everyone and their brother is making a fruity tasting west coast style ipa, but this is a good one as they go. a little haze to its glowing orange body, and a less impressive head than i hoped for, but it looks nice enough. smells like mango and orange, definitely the fruity side of hops, with the only real sweetness coming in the middle from the grain and the oils, and only average bitterness on the back end. it tastes and feels bigger than it is, maybe a little filling, especially with less than fully ideal carbonation, but the hop profile here is what makes it for me. i like the fruity complexion, not overly tropical or citrus forward, but kind of the best of both worlds there. fresh too, man, the hops are just bursting and juicy. this is what ive always thought these guys have done best, and this is another fine example of that. i hope it gets bottled, i think with better carbonation this would be exceptional.

Brief impressions from a bottle:

IPA. 7.50% ABV. Hoped with "overflowing scoops of Mosaic, Meridian and Denali."

APPEARANCE: Half body, half head. The former clear, clean, filtered, and of pale copper colour; the latter white, billowing, and somewhat soft.

Appears adequately carbonated. Not unique or special, but appealing within the style.

AROMA: Tropical fruit dominates. Mango, citrus peel, tangerine, subtle blueberry (Mosaic), pale malts, bilberry.

Appealing, showcasing Mosaic's subtlety wonderfully well. I'm eager to try it.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE: Matches the aroma. The bursts of blueberry & bilberry are the highlight, but the subsidiary tropical fruit flavours complement them nicely. Pale malts keep it balanced; perceived bitterness is low for an IPA.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, well-carbonated, medium-bodied, and somewhat refreshing. Complements the taste well and is true to style. Well-executed.

OVERALL: Bear Republic quietly brews some of the best expressions of the oversaturated style, and Hop Shovel is no exception. So many breweries are flocking to Mosaic hops for their popularity (and subsequent marketing potential), but many fail to showcase it well. Bear Republic succeeds, committing to the hop and supporting it with a well-chosen cohort of Meridian and Denali. This bottle was from my first six-pack...it certainly won't be my last. I'm not sure I prefer this over Racer 5, but if a beer induces that kind of hesitation, you know it's damn solid. A must-try for any IPA fan, even if there's room for further intricacy and depth of flavour.

Poured out a clear, golden-orange color with a small, white head of bubbly foam. It smelled of sweet tropical fruits mostly grapefruit and pineapple. It tasted tropical with sweet caramel and a bitter, piney hop bite.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 6/27/2017. Pours fairly crystal clear medium golden/yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense a fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big passion fruit, papaya, guava, peach, pineapple, mango, melon, berries, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, light pepper/pine, cracker, rye bread, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/tropical/fruity hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of huge passion fruit, papaya, guava, peach, pineapple, mango, melon, berries, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, pepper, pine, cracker, rye bread, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind/grassy bitterness and rye spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of passion fruit, papaya, guava, peach, pineapple, mango, melon, berries, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, orange rind, pepper, pine, cracker, rye bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/fruity hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and no lingering hop/rye astringency after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from lingering bitterness, quickly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, bready/grainy/sticky, and lightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is an incredible IPA. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/fruity hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink; despite the increasingly drying/resinous finish. Very dank, piney, and fairly juicy on hops; with just enough malts for bitterness balance. The rye works really well with the herbal/peppery background qualities of the hops, but never feels too spicy. A highly enjoyable offering.

Came in a standard pint a deep rich golden with a full one finger white head atop.Pure grapefruit in the nose....deep grapefruit rind, quite sharp but very appetizing.Grapefruit is large on the palate but there is more of a juicy citric element to go along with it even a bit of pine, mild biscuit sweetness underneath. No holds barred here,if you are a fan of the sharp grapefruit flavors unhinged than you will like this,I loved it.

Ample blanketing lace with thicker rings around the sip marks. Moderate head that settles to rim bubbles. gold to amber color with some haze.

Fresh bouquet of floral hop. Very attractive without being "too much."

Plenty of grapefruit to the taste, the malt is practically hidden. Yet, the hop is not too strong--good blend. Moderate richness but the carbonation is elevated which makes this seem thinner than it is. Black pepper bitterness for the aftertaste.

12oz brown bottle, sample from brewery.

Lacing is nothing short of epic, a nearly clear IPA to boot. Dank and all citrusy in the nose with suggestions of hemp seeds, orange pith, grapefruit peel, and white tea. Clean palate with a perfect amount of crispness, a bit of body shows there is just enough of a malt foundation to hold up against the onslaught of hops. By far one of the better IPAs i've tried in a good while. Kudos to Bear Republic for releasing yet another winner!!

On tap at Dixie. Clear bright orange with a small white head. Smells of strong resiny hops. A little bit of sweetness on the nose. Tastes of piney resiny hops. Spicy rye flavor comes through. Grainy finish as it dries out leaving just pine bitterness. Medium heavy. Low carbonation. Flavorful and aggressive. Also not a particularly easy IPA to drink because of the aggressive flavors.
