Man we're going waaay back on this review. November 13, 2010, the now defunct (sad) Bistro West Coast Barrel Aged Festival.

So this is a weird one, called an "English Estate October Ale" made with 10% raw wheat and 10% split peas. You read that right. Says they used a Scottish yeast and aged 100 days in 1st use French Oak barrels.

Pours amber, good clarity, soft head 1/4" off white. Aroma was mostly french oak. Couldn't tell you where the split peas or Scottish yeast fell into the equation. Did not register.

Taste has a toasted caramel presence, but sweeter than that even, not sure why. Big and boozy. Has a little bit of honey like thickness and taste/sweetness going for it. The french oak was more noticeable in the nose than anywhere else, just has a bit of dark fruit bitterness in the mouth feel. An interesting beer, but I don't think it was something that Bear Republic thought they could sell as opposed to making an experimental one off.

Draft at Lakeside brewpub. Amber/copper body, sparse bubbly head. Malty aroma, tobacco, kind of smoky. Taste adds a bit of sweetness to the malts, and a bit of booze.

A very light, fruity, welcoming aroma. Taste follows with a berry-like fruit flavor and a sticky sweetness. The barrel isn't really noticeable at all unless you let the beer linger on the palate a bit.

On tap at Bear Republic Brewing Company in Healdsburg, CA.

Pours a hazy copper with a foamy tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, black tea, fruit, wood, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, caramel, brown sugar, and fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with lots of fruit and sticky sugar characteristics all around.

Serving type: on tap.

Description: Barrel aged for 100 days in French oak.

Deep red, almost ruby, color. Modest head, nearly no lace. Cloudy.

Sweet (like molasses) aroma with ample alcohol nose.

The smell carries through in the flavor. Lots of alcohol warmth. Syrupy but with good carbonation. Comes across as beer brandy blend. Aftertaste is sugary with only a touch of bitterness.
