Café Racer 15Café Racer 15
Notes: Café Racer 15™ features aromas of bright citrus and resinous pine from the generous use of Citra, Amarillo, Cascade and Chinook hops which are complimented by a dry malt finish. The result is a high revving Double IPA that is loud and assertive, much like the rebellious street racers who inspired it. Never ride alone...

On tap at the Meridian Pint the other day.

The beer pours a light golden amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is all west coast hoppy goodness, showcasing considerable orange citrus and pine, but with little malty sweetness. Consequently, I was a bit surprised by what I tasted, as this beer had a considerable sweet malt base, along with the considerable hoppy bitterness. It's still a fine tasting beer, but I found the alcohol to be a bit more prominent than I expected. Mouthfeel was otherwise medium bodied, with a long, bitter, alcoholic finish.

A nice enough beer, and I'm wondering if freshness might have been something of a problem here. I think the beer had been on tap for a while at the MP, and that may have contributed to the excessive sweet malt and noticeable alcohol. Still a nice beer, and one I hope to try again from a fresher keg.

Edit from 2/4/13. Happened to be in Healdsburg on Saturday, and so got my wish to sample a fresher version of this beer. The difference was dramatic. At the brewpub, this beer has a wonderful nose of tropical fruit, pine and dry citrus. This smells like a hophead's dream, and the flavor profile didn't disappoint. It replicates the nose, but the mouthfeel is fairly light and lean for such a big beer, but I think that works well in this DIPA. Otherwise, the moderate sweetness in the mid palate is gently pushed aside, leading to a long, bitter, hop infused finish. Alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile, with no noticeable heat on the finish. Just delicious. Still would have preferred the Racer X (which they were out of), but this wasn't a bad substitute.

This was an absolute fantastic beer and for me it ranks with Dogfish Head 90.
I don't normally go after Imp. IPA that often because they seem to be just bitter and lacking of hop flavor, plus I can't handle the high ABV's.
Café Racer 15 is perhaps the most aromatic and flavorful IPA I've ever had.
The appearance is burnished orange amber with a smaller bright white head leaving some laced as it fades.
The aroma is fantastic. Smells of candied tropical and citrus fruits, floral and pine resin too.
The taste is equally impressive. Very hoppy with flavors of tropical fruits citrus, peaches and floral notes. Malts are sweet and balance nicely the hoppy onslaught.
Surprisingly, it's not bitter at all. Very sutle alcohol notes at the finish. Drinks smooth and crisp over the palate and is remarkably un assertive for a Imp. IPA.
A very well made beer.

Pours a nice orange and honey colored liquid, light white head on the top. Aroma was ample Citra and Chinook. Smells quite excellent.

Taste, damn good for 10% you can't taste it, lots of citrus flavors imparted from the hops. Lots of resiny pine dankness to accompany those citrus and tropical fruit flavors. Bitterness and carbonation are lower. This really hits the spot, a little pricey, those 22oz formats. Had it for the first time at a Bistro dipa fest.

EDIT: Reviewed in bottle, not as good. Scored adjusted. Previously 4.3/5

Hazy, dark orange/medium amber in color. Aroma starts with bright and zesty grapefruit peel. High alcohol, grapefruit, high bitterness, and not enough malt bass leave this a bit uneven. I like the bitterness but the mouthfeel just let's me down, and starts to become s bit abrasive .

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass.

Appearance: medium-light orange hue with a little bit of haze and a moderate effervescence. Head is a finger of frothy white foam which subsided pretty quickly. Nice.

Smell: bright, citrusy, floral, tangeriney, but not overwhelming. Finely balanced hops over a sweet malt base. I like it quite a lot.

Taste: there's an added earthiness to the flavors of the hops, but the same citrusy brightness remains from the aroma. Alcohol is pretty high, and this is noticeable but not a drawback. Bitterness is pretty low for the style, but I think it works in this formulation. A damn tasty beer.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a nice creaminess, especially for the style.

Overall: I really like this brew. I could probably quaff dangerous amounts of it.

Poured into a Chuckanut pint glass. Pours a slightly hazy medium golden amber with a half finger off-white head with good retention and light lacing. Nice aroma of caramel malt, tropical and citrus fruit, citrus and mildly piney hops. Flavor is caramel malt, citrus and piney hops with a good resinous character, citrus, tropical fruit, grapefruit rind, finishing with a long, lingering resinous hops bitterness. Medium bodied with a hint of creaminess. This is a well balanced, full malt bodied IIPA with a great selection of hops; pretty much as I expect from this brewery. Really hits the spot. These guys know how to build a flavorful IPA.

Pours an orange color with a finger of foam that recedes into a nice ring. Big time hop aroma full of resin and citrus fruit. More resin on the palate with a little fruit and a some malt sweetness.
