Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.75%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Café Racer 15™ features aromas of bright citrus and resinous pine from the generous use of Citra, Amarillo, Cascade and Chinook hops which are complimented by a dry malt finish. The result is a high revving Double IPA that is loud and assertive, much like the rebellious street racers who inspired it. Never ride alone...

Placid pour, dark orange, fairly still, no real head.

Smells chinooky with some weird contemporary citrus hops thrown in. A not very comfortable mix of old and new. It's strong and balanced well against the malt but the hop profile clashes with itself.

Tastes a bit more cohesive than it smells but it still never really comes together. Old school DIPA up front, weird tea and citrus hops in the back.

I had to try this based on where it came in on the blind taste tests. At first smell and taste I was blown away. I don't even know how to explain the taste as it hits your taste buds. It is almost like some magical, un-natural, thing. So light airy and impossible to describe. However, the finish just didn't work for me. I am the first to confess that I probably have no clue what makes a good IPA, but I just wasn't down with the finish. If this finished a little more smoothly, I would have ranked it much higher.

A deep clear brownish orange with a pale yellow head on the first pour. Toocold as the head is tight and not very developed. I let it warm. Next pour brings lots of haze and a sizeable head. Good lacing and decent retention. Light carbonation as it sits. Nose quite yummy. Lots of caramel, citrus, mango, toffee, pineapple. A bed of pine forest. Just a flourish of alcohol after it warms but really the only clue to the booze is a peppery spiciness as I inhale deeply through my nose. Some light vanilla tinged grains. Like a breakfast treat. Taste is juicy, very dry, but surprisingly malty. A sweet caramel front with a roasted grain body. Pine starts the match toward hops. Then the flow of citrus, tropical fruits, and oily resins coating the mouth. A minty, cooling and flavor. Alcohol is very well integrated. Sweet but not overbearing. Slight in presence. Feel is superb. Lush, finely carbonated with a weight on the heavier side of medium. Crisp and dry with a quenching overall character. So easily drinkable that it boarders on dangerous. But I'm in! Top tier brew. One of the better DIPAs I've had.
