Bear Republic Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.30%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Racer X is an uncommon Double India Pale Ale which puts a California twist on English brewing traditions by adding an assertive hop aroma and bitterness that compliments the firm malt backbone. Like its little brother Racer 5, Racer X is balance in a bottle.

Pours muddy copper with a tinge of gold around the edges and a short white head. The nose is a huge ripe grapefruit with pine needle, tangerine, and biscuit malt. At the front of the tongue I get a lot of grapefruit flavor which blends into pine needle and onion, delivering a moderate bitterness that is balanced out by malt on the finish. For a double IPA it is very drinkable with a medium body and medium carbonation, but this is quite a mild example of the style. I would guess this was a regular IPA.

It's been a while since I have had the Racer 5, but I remember it being an above average IPA. I was excited to try the Racer X, but am a little disappointed. Nothing really stands out about this one for me. The hoppiness is kind of one dimensional with a piney taste, but that is quickly replaced with a malty aftertaste. It's not bad, but for the price there are a lot of other double IPA's I would rather have. Good thing it is Christmas and I got plenty of different options to choose from!

Picked up a bomber from Total Wine in early December for $7.99. Bottled on 10-21-13.

Beer poured orange with a nice white head that is leaving lacing.

Nose is pretty nondescript, some citrus hops linger.

Taste is big grapefruit citrus rind and pine up front. Malt backbone attempts to balance things out but does not accomplish that. Everything i am looking for in a 2IPA.

Mouthfeel is full and satisfying.

Overall this is a very smackable brew. This is an old school 2IPA where the malts complement the hops and not become dominantly sweet and the abv is not jacked up too high. Try it if you come across it. You will not be disapointed!
