Had on-tap at the Bear Republic brew pub. Available only in a pint glass- $1 of which goes to helping a motor neuron disease.
The pour has a nice amber color (as expected), with ample lacing coating tbe glass. Nose has some nice bread dough elements, with some honey and citrus zest. Taste leaves a lingering bitter finish which is a bit overpowering and becomes more of a hop bomb than the pleasant beer suggeted by its aroma, though the rye malts are more present. So naturally if your preference leans towards the bitter you may find much to enjoy here. Personally I would have enjoyed more nuance, especially since you are committing to the whole pint with this one.

Imperial pint served at the brewpub.
A: Pour a dark burnt amber color with a finger of off-white head that faded into a bubbly film and thick collar. Sheets of bubbly lace were left down the glass. Great head retention.
S: Malty notes of caramel and rye. Earthy spicy hops alongside tons of spice dominate.
T: Rye, caramel and bitter leafy hops dominate with bready malt and a touch of pine in the finish. Very bitter but very malty. Similar to what I imagine hop rod rye would taste like mixed with red rocket. Spicy hops, spicy bitter, not sweet. Bitter pine and spicy rye all the way.
M: medium-full body, solid bitter punch, normal splashy carbonation. Rye adds another dimension to the bitter. Definitely a “red” ipa. Bitter spicy and hoppy.
