Fifth stop of the great 2004 Sonoma County Beer Run. (http://stoutguy.com/beer/trips/Sonoma/)

Bear Republic is honestly one of my favorite California breweries. I will admit to having a beer crush on the brewery.

The brewpub is located in downtown Healdsburg, a town that still feels like a slice of the 1950's, only with high rent antiques and some truly funky places (including an old movie palace the Raven Theater with acts like Charlie Musselwhite). The pub itself is actually hard to spot from the main street as it's located on the backside of a small commercial block. The brewery is actually in a separate building next to the restaurant and is visible through a set of windows.

The pub is clean and well light with a raised bar dias next to a set of serving tanks. The selection of beers here was top notch! While D, the erstwhile navigator, ran down a pint of Grandma's Own and Hop Rod Rye, I sampled the largest sampler of the trip, a whopping 12 beers!

While beer republic doesn't do new growlers anymore, some of the bar staff is sympathetic enough to help a guy who's driven 500 miles and so I went home with a growler of Racer X.

The crowd was great at the pub, very friendly and outgoing. One of the fellows we spent our time jawing with, actually ended up buying our pints. That's a good thing, but even without it, this pub would make my day if it was anywhere near me.

Interesting to visit here, knowing that Healdsburg is in one of the great wine valleys of the world... where tourists typically sample wines in cool cellars and then go to their cars and get hammered by the mid-day sun.
Not so for me on this dreary February day. Yet Bear Republic helps give this main street of this very small city (11,000) some life. These home brewers opened shop in the 1990s and have made a nice go of it... doing the cool things brewers can do and bringing life to that corner of a three block main street.
I did not eat there however because their beers are too hoppy for food for me. But, I did have a nice flight of samplings on tap.

I recently stopped in here on a trip to Northern California. The inside hosts a brewery, bar, and restaurant with lots of racing themed decorations on the walls. It was quite busy when I stopped in and I had a hard time ordering beers from the bar with all of the people waiting at the bar top along with the restaurant orders they were pouring too. They had around 25 beers on tap, including their year round stuff, specialties, and some barrel aged offerings too. The quality of everything was good.

Visited the Bear Republic with some friends. Amazed at how much was on tap. Always loved their beers but, had no idea how much is available at the brewpub. It was very busy and packed on a Saturday night. The waitress was very friendly, and service was quick and professional. We didn't have food, but, the overall atmosphere was fun, and laid back, with some great music!!

Almost everyone I know likes Racer 5, but, I would highly recommend going if you want to see what else they have available.

A good size bar with over a dozen different beers. Food was good pub food but nothing outstanding. Service was good as the place was busy for Thursday night. Beer selection is the reason to go here. Beside the usual great IPAs that they do there are other varieties like sours and bourbon barrel varieties that don't make it out East.

The brewpub is in a very laid back and relaxing environment and the atmosphere is great!

A good place to stop for a beer lover even though it is in the middle of wine country!

Pretty regular food menu, burgers mostly. Beers were good, some special brewery only releases.

We felt a little dazed and confused the next morning after a long night of cheerful drinking at Russian River. So, if Hair of the Dog is a quick way to get back into travel mode, we decided to up the potable ante and start with Hair of the Bear. Just north of Santa Rosa, and a pretty 15 minute drive, Bear Republic is squished into the back of a fashionable corner of a lovely small town, and feel much more like a restaurant than the other sites we've visited on this trip. But rest assured, the beer is there and good. We sat outside under the din of an air conditioner, but appreciated the shade on a hot Northern California day. The food was excellent, too, and valued cushioning against the beer we'd be throwing on our guts during the day. My girlfriend lavished the ahi tuna salad with praise, and I deeply appreciated the black and blue burger. We wished we had more time to explore the area, too, but breweries and rush hour deadline beckoned. But everything went smoothly here on a calm weekday lunchtime, with great service, great food, great beer and even a little mercy. No faults here.

Visited on a recent trip to Sonoma County. Bear Republic is located in downtown Healdsburg making it an easy stop for a few beers and food. They had a nice selection of brewery only taps including four sours. Enjoyed one with blueberry and also a Berliner Weiss. Service was okay - didn't like the fact that we had to pay $1.50 for a small sample pour (my wife was unsure of the Berliner in terms of sourness). I can understand the policy but why not remove the charge if you end up ordering the beer in a full size glass? Really left a bad taste in my mouth. Selection was good (guessing around 15 beers on tap). Food was okay - bar food for the most part. Much preferred Russian River but I guess that would go without saying.
