8/28....pours darker gold, touch of foam, white ring with bubbles. Light wheat nose, faint. Wheat filled flavor, light citrus. Banana flavor taste. Simple and tasty, for a somewhat routine hefe.

An underwhelming hefe weizen. Coming from a fan of the style, I was hoping for more, but nevertheless Wagner gives us a decent, summer beer, which, if you don't try and compare it to other examples of the style, is serviceable enough in its own right and quite quaffable.

12oz bottle obtained via trade with Shippos. Thanks for the opportunity...

Poured in an imperial pint glass, forms no head to speak of (even with the hard pour), and leaves a few bubbles here and there on the side of the glass. A warm honey/amber hued brew, with a wheaty yet still unimspiring aroma. Taste is wheaty like the nose, but short-lived, and has a slight citrus tinge to it. Mouthfeel is thin, and drinkability is alright, but I question why one would want to. Shoot, I like Blue Moon better than this. Have had better brews from them, and hope to find others. Maybe this is a one-brew problem.

It's been a while since Wagner's gotten a review on this one, and if my experience is any indication, I think this brewery's improving with time -- they're in their 8th year of production, if I'm not mistaken. And it's always good to get fresh beer in the middle of wine country...

Pours cloudy orange/yellow with a nice two-finger head. Smells delightful, citrus and cloves and some yeasty bread, like a really good breakfast. Goes down smoothly, with a nice carbonated crackle. Tastes wheaty with hints of citrus and spice, with a nice clean finish.

There are, I'm sure, better hefes out there. But grilling lakeside, it went down very nicely. I think they're getting the style down.

UPDATE: One year later...

That was 2007. The 2008 version was almost as good, but they may have gone just a bit overboard on the spice flavors this time out. It went from a hint of cloves to, well, a bigger hint. Not undrinkable by any stretch, and still a good example of the style. But I was surprised, actually. I think they tinkered with a good thing and maybe took it down just a tiny notch.

Appearance: pours a cloudy yellowish orange color with a spotty surface head. No lacing develops. Just doesn't look good.

Smell: quite a nice aroma with some banana and cloves.

Taste: this beer is mildly malty, with the typical clove, banana, and mild citric bitterness. Not as refreshing as other hefes on the market.

Mouthfeel: this beer was slightly crisp but leaning towards smooth at the start and finish. Relatively clean finish.

Drinkability: just a bit above average. This beer is not as crisp and refreshing as I would like.

It's always nice to find a brewery nestled in one of the largest wine regions in the US, but maybe asking for a good one is too much...

Had this one the third time up in the Finger Lakes, against my better judgment I decided to try their hefe at Danio's, an authentic (or so they say) Heuriger with interesting and well executed Austrian fare. I figured the hefe would go well with this, and a hefe would have if it was a good one!

Pours pale golden with a white semicreamy head, looks pretty good, albeit a bit light. Nose is quite citrusy with a hint of yeast. Taste is way overpowered by citrus, tastes like you dumped a lot of lemon into the beer by accident. The yeasts and other nice bits are hard to find while drinking, but they are there. I am glad it was a hot day out, I was able to drink this beer, but if it wasn't I'd be hard pressed to finish it unless I was dying for some lemon.

The beer pours a very cloudy orange color with a thick frothy white head that fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a nice wheat scent which boasts of banana and cloves. It finishes with a fruity yeast aroma which is quite pleasant. The taste is good. It has a rich wheat malt flavor that goes down smooth and finishes with a dry, yet fruity hefe yeast taste. The mouthfeel is decent. It is a medium bodied beer with a little less than adequate carbonation. This is a fine hefe. It has good flavor and aroma; a good beer for hot summer days.

A- pours an almost clear bright brassy yellow with a huge meringue foam cap that snap vrackles and pops down Plenty of streamers that make the little bits of sediment dance around. The label says it is unfiltered but it isn't cloudy, yet it has a slight haze and bits.

S- A dusty citrus, clove aroma with a sustained wheatiness to it.

T- that wheatiness starts out then you get the citrus notes quickly that don't give way, but allows some banana clove notes in too.

M- light bodied with some wheat mouth feel. Consistent prickly micro bubbles prickling the tongue & palate. Makes me think it would pair well with some spicy foods.

D- Fun to try a beer from a region I have not tried. I love this style of beer, and I love a refreshing easy drinking beer. This fits the bill without going above & beyond. Good beer, nothing crazy.

Lovely cloudy gold color with a big, pillowy, persistent head. Classic banana, clove, citrus/lemon aroma and flavor. The mouthfeel is full but that doesn't take away from the beer's ability to refresh. A summer seasonal presently but hopefully in the future it'll be a year round offering. Cheers to Wagner Brewing for this fine, authentic Hefe.

Pours a clody golden orange with a thin fizzy head. Not much retention and no laceing. Aroma is of clove and fruit. Body is on the light side and quite carbonated.Taste is of bubble gum and bananna up front with a spicy finish. Not in the elite class of this style, but not bad.

Bought this about a month ago from the brewery. Waited for a nice hot day to open one up...

Appearance: Good cloudy body, with about a half inch of head even on a hard pour. Disappears almost instantly. No lacing. Nice color, however, darker yellow.

Nose: Good aroma. Average for a hefe, the usual banana and cloves. Maybe a little too sweet.

Palate: Very mild. Obvious clove flavor, with some banana and not as sweet as the nose suggests. A little bitter on the aftertaste. A ltitle citrusy as well.

Mouthfeel: Pretty smooth. Kind of bland however. Not as good as some other middle of the road hefes. Drinkable for sure, but much better hefes out there.
