November 16th, 2016 - Next up from the Kirkland German Beer advent calendar is the Schloss Weiss. A beer with a considerable cap of foam and a by-now familiar golden-brown color, the smell is pretty clear. It shows some orange, wheat and a light acidic twang that gives this a needed lift. The flavor is a softer touch, bringing that twang to the taste and giving it some more definition with a lactose bite. It's a little bready too, like a Hawaiian roll, but still manages to come across as a little bland.

Poured from the can into a wheat style glass.

Creamed up forming two finger head. Light white in color, a touch of rice cake looking top and dissolving at a good pace. Pale orange and opaque with mild haze but not a solid or streaky mess either. Some very fine rising carbonation, that moves at a real slow pace too.

Aroma has a good but somewhat undefined estery quality. Light touches of bakery bread, and a bit of pasty and sticky yeast flavors. Hints a little peanut also which is interesting on the malt side. Not too much classic sensing character, but a pleasant aroma still makes notice.

Palate seems to provide a little more. Good mid palate filled with a phenolic clove spice, and mixing malt sweetness. Slighty flour and dry grain aftertaste, but a supportive mouthfeel on the malt angle. Dry flour a bit, but a good chewy density that hits the mix nicely.

Sorta has the classic touch but lacks the classic aroma and estery notes of a hefe. But a drinkable beer easily.

Appearance: Brilliant, moderately hazy golden orange in color, with a robust white head, thick chunky lacing. Profuse, fat bubbles drift lazily to the surface.

Aroma: Bready wheat malt, with only faint notes of cloves, and ripe bananas; however, there are ripe fruit notes of pears and apples.

Taste: Wheat malt is dominant at the start of the taste, with prominent white bread notes. There is a bit of clove and ripe banana, though more of ripe apples and pears. There is a slight pepper note late in the taste, and mild grassy and herbal hops.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, pleasant, though it seems a touch thin. The carbonation is slight, with just a hint of sting.

Drinkability/notes: A solid and well-crafted middle-range example, not over-the-top, somewhere between a classic Hefeweizen and an American Wheat.

Presentation: Packaged in a 500 ml (16.9 ounce) steel can, served in a Duvel chalice. The "Best by" date is 05/2021.

$ 2.50 (Including tax)/500 mL can ($0.148/oz) from Costco, Schertz, TX. Part of the Costco 2019 Advent Calendar. Reviewed 10/29/19.
Can dated “EXP 05/2021”. Stored on the shelf at the store, stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 45 degrees in a hand washed and dried weizen glass.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Light yellow, hazy.
Body – Yellow, cloudy.
Head – Large (Maximum 11 cm, aggressive center pour), off-white, medium density, good retention, slooowly diminishing to a three cm plug with three-dimensional bits of foam hanging on the glass.
Lacing – Fair. A couple of three-dimensional arcs of medium-bubbled foam.
Aroma – 4 - Light clove and banana.
Flavor – 3 – Begins slightly sweet with very light banana flavor. A bit yeasty. No alcohol (5.5 % ABV as marked on the can) flavor or aroma, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.25 – Medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.25. Appearance and aroma are both good, flavor is weak, palate pretty much as expected. I would not be averse to drinking a few of these.

CAN from Costco's 2019 Beer Advent Calendar.

A sad attempt at a hefeweizen, but at least there's a bit of clove and banana to it...it's a shame the wheat malt backbone doesn't taste fresh at all and there's no attempt to evoke orange peel.

Like all the others from the giant pack from which this came, it's a little funky and can-bound, but either I am getting used to that funkiness or this one is a bit better than some of the others.

It pours dirty yellow with just a bit of fizz (barely enough). The aroma is subdued malty hoppy yeasty. The taste is pretty authentic (it is really German, after all). With malts and yeast forward, per the style.

Recommended - it is better than expected. The ancient "German purity laws" seem to stifle experimentation and individuality.
