The damn parking meter out front was jammed—bless the anonymous saint who left me 26 minutes of salvation. A ticking clock for beer-fueled chaos, but hell, I’m game. The TapRoom Beer Company loomed ahead, an oasis on the chaotic stretch of El Cajon Boulevard, or just "the Blvd" if you're one of the locals with a penchant for brevity or disdain for formalities.

Inside, the place stretches up rather than out, a tall, narrow temple of hops where you’ll crane your neck just to read the menu. I’m convinced their architects were catering to giraffes, or maybe NBA players with beer habits to rival Charles Barkley’s golf swing. Either way, this giraffe decided on the black IPA. Dark, mysterious, and potent enough to have me hallucinating spots on my own skin. A beer like that doesn’t just get you drunk—it drags you into its orbit and spits you out somewhere unrecognizable.

As I nursed my pint, I considered the inevitable: What happens when I start seeing spots? And what if they don’t disappear? It’s not far-fetched to imagine myself tearing down the Blvd, naked, with poorly drawn crayon polka dots covering my body. Some unfortunate soul would spot me and wonder what lunatic escaped the zoo this time.

The beer itself? Damn solid—a roasty, bitter slap to the face with just enough citrus to soften the blow. It wasn’t here to hold your hand; it was here to throw you headfirst into the abyss. And maybe that’s the spirit of TapRoom Beer Company—a place that doesn’t coddle but challenges. A haven for drinkers with questionable parking skills, no time to spare, and a penchant for the absurd.

But 26 minutes goes fast when the beer is good, and the Boulevard waits for no man. I drained the pint, tipped my hat to the menu hanging high above, and walked out into the San Diego sun, ready to tempt fate with another jammed meter and the next round of madness. Cheers.
