473 mL can from the LCBO; best before Oct 5 2017 and served slightly chilled. Not explicitly stated, but the talk of Vermont yeast and flaked oats on the back label suggest it's along the same lines as a NE IPA.

Pours a translucent pale golden colour, producing one finger of foamy white head that remains in place for an impressively long time. Even at the fifteen minute mark, it has barely receded at all - though it does take on a somewhat smoother, creamier appearance. Beautiful lacing; definitely an attractive brew. The aroma is characterized by citrusy grapefruit and orange notes, with minor showing of apricot, pineapple and bready, wheaty pale malts. Not particularly aromatic, but what's there is nice.

Tasty stuff; quite citrus-centric. Grainy pale malts with wheaty, bready sweetness can just barely be discerned, buried in the background, but flavours of white grapefruit, orange and peach are what leap out to me - being entirely responsible for this IPA's (relatively modest) juiciness. Perhaps a hint of pineapple mid-sip, with the bitterness increasing towards the back end as resiny, earthy notes and suggestions of floral hops begin to supplant the juicy/fruity elements. The aftertaste maintains this bitterness for a few brief moments after each sip, but it fades within seconds thereafter. Medium-bodied - maybe leaning towards the lighter side - with middling carbonation levels that give this beer a somewhat prickly and crisp mouthfeel. A good, easy-drinking IPA that I'm enjoying.

Final Grade: 4.03, an A-. If you were to ask random Ontario BAs to name the top three IPA brewers in the province, I think it's safe to say that not a single one would pick Wellington. They've occasionally tried their hand at IPAs in the past (with mixed results), but none of those brews ever managed to 'achieve tenure' by gaining a permanent spot in Welly's stable of mainline brews... until Upside IPA, that is. And even though I don't think it's a perfect example of an IPA (especially a NE one, if that was the intent), I do believe that this brewery's portfolio is significantly improved by its inclusion. I've never been much of a Wellington loyalist in the past, but this beer might change that because I plan to return to it frequently.

Fresh can from today’s LCBO release. Lots of pure citrus fruit taste, orange, grapefruit, peach. But also bit of acids. Not so East Coast hazy. Juicy but needs malt.

Can: Poured an amber color ale with a medium foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of citrusy hops with some light bitter notes that are noticeable. Taste is a mix of dry malt notes with some hoppy citrusy notes with medium bitter aftertaste. Body is about average with good carbonation. Old school IPA with too much bitterness.

Golden peach flesh and cloudy with lots of small, slow rising bubbles. Topped with 4 fingers of white, snow like, yellow tinged head.

Smells of peaches, stone fruit, and light fleshed fruits like pears. Forests of pine and evergreen air freshener are right behind this.

Pear, pine, caramel, bitters, the triple effect (phenols) and oranges, all intermittent with a long, dull bitterness.

Medium, resinous body, moderate carbonation.

Drinking on Walkers Point, On, Jan 24th, 2018. Exceeded my expectations.

This is a decent attempt at an East Coast IPA by Wellington. Hits most of the right notes: pours a hazy light blonde colour, lots of head and lacing, big tropical hop aromas and flavours, lower bitterness, lighter body. For me, what's lacking here is just a small touch of malt sweetness to provide balance and add some of that juicy succulence you get from the really great Vermont IPAs.

Can from the Beer Store
Slightly hazy light golden color with a decent sized tightly bubbled white head. Fruity earthy grassy citrus and tropical fruity with bits of bread and light caramel maltiness. Clean tasty easy to drink IPA.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. Purchased from the LCBO for about $3.25 CDN. Happy to see Wellington with a full blown IPA on the shelves.

Appearance - Pours a pale golden color. Not nearlyy as orange and amber as most. A nice finger and change of loose and medium lasting white head rests on top. Plenty of haze, but doesn't look like orange juice.

Smell - Lots of peach with some other sweet stone fruit and subtle elements of grapefruit and mandarin. Quite fruit and light on the whole.

Taste - Flavors are pretty similar, again lots of stone fruit and especially peaches with some pineapple and grapefruit blending in for a tropical fiesta. Good an balanced but lacking the big citrus punch I find in the best IPA's

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, pretty drinkable and good level of carbonation.

Overall - Nothing to complain about, but on the sweeter side of things with peach and apricot playing a bigger role than usual and doesn't have both the intense bitterness and simultaneously big sweet notes that the best and juiciest of IPA's provides. A worthwhile sample but not quite on par with some of the old standbys and a notch down from some of the Collective Arts and especially GLB IPA's.

Pours a slightly hazy straw gold, with a large three finger head. Retention is quite good and long. Lacing is decent.

Smell is light citrus hops and some sweet malts. Not a lot going on and it doesn't live up to the promise of "east coast IPA"

Taste follows the nose for the most part. I get light citrus pith and then malt. Again, not exciting or extraordinary.

Feel is medium full, with decent carbonation.

Just a middle of the road beer. Maybe even a little less than that. The beer doesn't live up to the promise from the text on the can.

Can promises a hazy East Coast inspired IPA with Vermont ale yeast, bursting with tropical and citrus flavours. As a regular Vermont beer traveller and huge fan of NEIPAs this all sounds great to me but I'm skeptical after tasting several of Wellington's other offers. Look is slightly hazy but also with an over-active carbonation which keeps the puffy white head around for several minutes. Aroma is very light in the hop department but instead is dominated by the strong malt profile, reminiscent of something like Arrogant Bastard (definitely not an East Coast IPA). When the head finally dies down ... the taste. More fruit flavour than the aroma would suggest, but it's still pretty subtle as opposed to "bursting" and "exploding" as the can suggests. The mouthfeel is the best part of this beer as it is smooth and quite full. That said, the fruitiness from the hops never quite gets there with this one and while it was probably a little better than I expected, it's not something I will seek out again given what brewers like Collective Arts are doing in Ontario right now with beers like Life in the Clouds and IPA#5.

Not an east coast IPA - slightly haxy gold with a thick head. Light slightly dank aroma of tropical fruit and citrus. In the mouth these clash somewhat and there is a slightly metalic tang.

Pour from can into tulip glass. Pale yellow with decent collar throughout, cirtusy nose with grassy undertones. Taste smooth initally. Slight bitter aftertase but not overpowering hops. A decent find.

The subtle oat and wheat malt flavors are a superb match with the hop profile. Citrusy and peachy with a slight piney taste. I find it a very well balanced IPA.

Can freshly racked from the brewery - pours a hazed gold with a weak 1 finger cap - aromas of pine and citrus over a substantial grainy malt base - clan aroma - flavor is well balanced between bitter piney-floral bitter hopping and sturdy pale malts ...clean bitter finish - a solid IPA

Pours pale, glowing gold with a smallish head that manages to stick around a long time. Light citrusy aroma. Pineapple, white grapes, green tea, tart peaches in the taste. A bit of harshness in the bitterness. The mouthfeel is light bodied with medium carbonation. Light bitterness and herbal and tropical hoppiness in the finish.

Worth a try, but not the best hop profile, a bit harsh and astringent.

An employee at a Toronto LCBO recommended this to me and several customers, explaining that this is a surprisingly great alternative to Octopus Wants to Fight. It didn't matter that Octopus is decent but not the ultimate measure of a great IPA, nor did it matter that I have mentioned IPA 3 from Collective Arts as a spectacular alternative (better than Octopus in my estimation). No, Upside was the brew we just had to have. So we each bought one.
The employee at that LCBO has to stop recommending.
Upside IPA from Wellington (a brewery, from which I have yet to taste true quality) is a poor excuse of an IPA. Having a nose that reminds one of dirt and tree branches, it accompanies the superficial with an off tasting, pungent mess. I think there are hints of apricot, but I honestly couldn't recognize any of the "fruity goodness" some are talking about.
I would never dare recommend this to anyone, unless they read this and don't believe me. Then go ahead and try it. It won't kill you.
