Geary's IPAGeary's IPA

Brewed by:
D.L. Geary Brewing Company
Maine, United States

Style: English India Pale Ale (IPA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This ale has its origins in the traditional English style, with a generous helping of American exuberance. Bright copper in color, it has an assertive hop bitterness balanced with a subtle malt foundation. Dry hopping at two sates of the brewing process provides floral and fruity hop flavors adding to the complexity of the brew. Original gravity ~ 1060; Alcohol by volume -- 6%.

Picked this up at RSVP in portland. I had this once at the brewery but it was a while ago.

Pours an amber golden with a good head to start. It laces a curtain of bubbles on the glasses edgee.

The aroma is subtle with pale and crystal malts along with slight citrus and earthy hops.

I would say this is a hoppyier version of their pale ale. Is is a traditional english in that there is pleanty of malt up front. Thw hops come in and leave an earthy citrus taste on the back of the tongue. A lingering sweet citrus reveals a slight grassy bitterness

Note if you don't like ringwood you probably won't like this beer. But for me its a nice change for the seemingly endless west coast IPAs

12oz, micro label.

pours a nice straw, foamy head. Decent retention.

Smells earthy, hoppy, somewhat floral...

The flavors are earthy in the start, grassy... floral finish and hoppy linger.

Overall I liked this brew, it is a really good regional brew... and good for what it is. Tasty, and worth the purchase.

True to form, Gear'y English IPA is exactly what it says it is. The beer pours a nice clear copper with virtually no head or lacing. The smell is malt and bittering hops. The taste is bitter with notes of sour. The mouthfeel is medium to light in body and even carbonation. Overall it is drinkable, but there are just some many other beers out there.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

A nice simple off white head of three fingers uniform and soapy looking. Crystal clear real nice amber looking body, this is one good looking beer here. No lacing or stickiness.

Bouquet is a great simple citrus, but also a very sweet over ripe grapefruit sense of hops. Kind of mushy.

Taste is missing in the mid palate but all seems to come together at the end. Mild grapefruit bitterness and a good balance on the malt with a slight bready finish even though it is small. Finish is a good simple grapefruit also but does bring some of the mushy quality to it. Seems a little light bodied as well.

Overall not bad, I would have this over many other beer choices out there, but probably not over many other American IPAs. This tastes more American than English style.

Not very hoppy, tastes like an American ale.

I was a bit skeptical regarding how this beer would taste, based on the fact it's brewed in Maine, bottle label is not too impressive, and it was on the cheaper side price-wise. I was indeed wrong. It's a fine English style IPA, tastes good, and goes down smoothly/easy.

It pours a hazy, copper colour. The nose is not huge, but I do get plenty of pine resins. The thing I like best about it, is the hop/malt balance. They did not go overboard and turn it into a sweet, hoppy, syrupy mess, as many of the current, overpowering, trendy IPAs do. Actually, those 'out of balance beers', could learn a lot from this "little engine that could" IPA.

A - Well rough start so far. Sediment floaties in my glass, very little head, and no bottling date to speak of. Ow and did I miss the fact this was a twist off? Never a good sign for a IPA. Color is a relatively clear dark amber brow.
S - Pine and citrus hops, somewhat muted, with an English tea like malt base.
T - Well it's hoppy but not dish soapy with a harsh edge it does have some balance. Malts seem to be a sort of toffee like sweetness parrying to the hops heck even lingers on the palate. Very impressive for such an average beer.
M - Medium bodied, somewhat chewy, not as dry as I expected.

Overall I guess with a bottling date and a non-twist off cap these guys could make this IPA much better. Slightly above average IPA.

Not surprised that Geary's would make an IPA, but what is surprising is that their label looks that of a brown ale. I guees looks are decieving, so this should be good.

A: This beer pours a bright, hazy orange, with a solid 2 in, bright white head.

S: Very powerful citrus aroma up front with an underlyning of pine and apricot. Residual scent consists of some honey and a dash of grapefruit.

T: The flavor starts out with some floral hops and grassy notes. Blended very well with an underlyning of citrus and pine, that finishes sweet with honey sicle and dry yeast.

M: A slight bitter hop bite and tang, but mostly tame and creamy. Does have some slight carbonation and is drinkable as a six pack.

O: Very good IPA by Geary's, not the most bitter in terms of hops, but very well balanced between the citrus and complimentary spices. gearys has a tendancy to make strong beers despite the ABV, and the flavors of this beer make it a drink 1, drink 6!

Bottle courtesy of cjbmcdon, 12oz bottle into a tulip - no identifiable best before/bottled on date. Thanks Chris.

Pours a reddish orange, with a finger or so of bubbly white head. Doesn't last for long an fades to a thin film and a light collar. Nose holds a ton of malt, sweet caramel and breads, some light rye or graininess too. Lightly earthy. Some orange-y hops as well, a touch floral with a bit of grapefruit. Flavour is bready, , some lightly earthy malts as per the nose with an offputting sharp graininess, some adjuncts in here? More hop flavours as per the nose that come across as slightly faded; a touch of clementine. Lengthy but modest bitterness. Medium mouthfeel with a relatively high carbonation that fizzles away lightly. A touch of alcohol in the finish. Drinkable, but not all that desirable.
