Style: English India Pale Ale (IPA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This ale has its origins in the traditional English style, with a generous helping of American exuberance. Bright copper in color, it has an assertive hop bitterness balanced with a subtle malt foundation. Dry hopping at two sates of the brewing process provides floral and fruity hop flavors adding to the complexity of the brew. Original gravity ~ 1060; Alcohol by volume -- 6%.

Not very hoppy, tastes like an American ale.

Wow. Very disappointed in this, surprisingly. Aroma was promising, with more citrus character present than I'd expect from an East Coast IPA. I was excited, but then I took a sip. First thing I noticed was that it was way too malt-forward, and toasted malt flavored at that, which I did not expect, or appreciate, in an IPA. Hop presence was weak.. something I didn't expect from Geary's, a brewery whose Summer Ale is even rugged. Very disappointing. The mouthfeel: thin, and had a strange quality that the flavor of the beer somehow wasn't incorporated into the actual LIQUID of the beer.. As if they stood apart somehow. I don't know if that makes any sense, but whether it does or not, this is an experience I'll not be repeating.

12 oz bottle. Twist off.

It pours a clear copperish amber with a soapy, foamy slightly off white head that leaves speckled lacing.

The smell is not as citrus or hoppy as you would want.

The flavor is mild fruity, and more malt than I'd LIke .

Overall, OK. but not out there with the best IPAs.

Good for an English IPA, sessioned quite a few of these at a recent wedding and was satisfied.

12-ounce, stubby, brown bottle poured into a 16-ounce shaker glass. The label of a barrel looks like it should be on a root beer bottle. I think D.L. Geary is paying homage to the fact that IPAs were originally shipped across sea.

Appearance - copper and clear with a rocky, egg-shell white head;

Smell - Hoppy and yeasty;

Taste - very mild hops for what IPAs have become. This may be a more classic English-style IPA. It doesn't have the assault of hops that many American IPAs have. It's bitter and malty.

Mouthfeel - Dry and a very slight astringency. This IPA is well carbonated, but not fizzy.

Overall - Closer to an American Pale Ale than an American IPA, but this makes the drinking easier.

I enjoy this more than the more dry Geary's Pale Ale and I don't mind having it in regular rotation in my refrigerator.

Picked this up spontaneously due to a pretty good price at my local bottle shop. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised.

P - Copper/dark brown with a reddish/orange tint. Poured from a bottle into a snifter. A creamy off white one finger head which fell off pretty quickly.

A - Some citrus notes, a little earthy & not very hoppy for an IPA.

T - Not as much citrus in the taste. More molasses & a sweet syrupy taste than a citrus. Some orange notes but no grapefruit or hops at all.

M - light to medium in body. Nothing too amazing but this beer finishes very dry & it isn't bitter at all.

O - For the price I paid ($2.99) this isn't bad. I wouldn't ever pay more than $8.99 for a 6 pack.
