Deeply malty, with caramel apparent. Smoky secondary aromas are also present, adding complexity. Hops are quite low. Dark brown color, with deep ruby highlights. Clear with a large tan head. Richly malt with kettle caramelization. Hints of roasted malt and smoky flavor are present. Hop flavors and bitterness are medium-low, so malt impression dominates. Full-bodied, having a thick, chewy viscosity. A smooth, alcoholic warmth is present and is quite welcome since it balances the malty sweetness. Moderate carbonation.

A wonderful cross between a barrel aged imperial stout and what is called a scotch ale. There was a warm malt whiskey aspect, a tart sensation on the sides of the tongue, and all of what is best in the most excellent imperial stouts. It is sold on tap as just another beer, but the words world class come to mind when I think of this beer. It would be a great thing to see this beer become widely available. I had a couple of pints of it while passing through Augusta Maine at the bar at the Senator Inn and was really impressed and thought there should be more reviews of it on BA.

Burgundy brown in color with a bit light shining through on the sides. Small head but with staying power. Lots of blankety lace.
Despite the darkness, this has a greater hop aroma. Light darker malt flavor. In a word (or two), well-balanced.
Almost a port-like start to the taste, extremely attractive. Very complex: plenty of malt shifts and the hop is very good in the finish and aftertaste--which features a chocolatey element. The initial taste is dry, but a subtle sweetness shows up toward the swallow. The alcohol shows up in the first part of the aftertaste.
