From Hipercor. In Bavaria glass. After dinner. Reading Lupuloadicto. Great mouthfeel and a nice taste. This brewery seems to never fail me

The last of the mixer pack I picked up a while back...

A - Pours a nice dark brown with an amber hue, finger of head with some retention and no lacing.

S - Hints of grassy hops amidst cloves, caramel and figs.

T - The cloves come through alongside a bit of woody caramel, burnt toast and bready malts. A lingering sweetness with the cloves re-emerging and bit of banana bread.

M - Lighter bodied ale that goes down rather prickly, but finishes wet.

O - A tasty dunkel, decent flavour profile and refreshing in nature. Nothing spectacular, but certainly sessionable for the style.

500 mL bottle from a gift pack; best before Feb 23 2013. This is one of those beer styles that I don't get around to trying all that often - it has been close to a year since my last dunkel review - but the few I've tried have been consistently enjoyable. This bottle gushed like crazy when I opened it - maybe it was too cold, or maybe the gnomes in my refrigerator had been agitating it with the door closed, I really have no way of knowing.

Pours a muddy, opaque brownish colour, with some red tinges visible under the light. The light beige-coloured head is rather lofty at first, but soon settles down to a more manageable half-finger cap of dense, creamy foam which sticks around for much of the drink. The nose is decent, but harbours nothing unusual or exciting - a toasted wheat malt backbone with some banana and mild clove spiciness. Doesn't smell much different than their Weisser Hirsch.

The first thing I can pick out of the flavour is the abundance of banana, supported by lots of wheat and dark malts. The sweet nature of its profile definitely gives the brew a bit of a bubblegum vibe. The clove spice is mild and not a significant contributor to the flavour. Yeasty aftertaste that leaves a coating behind in the mouth, with some accompanying tanginess. One thing I must compliment is the mouthfeel - this stuff feels soft and supple on the palate, and is just a pleasure to drink. Very smooth, with relatively mild carbonation (note: this may be related to the 'gushing', so your mileage may vary) and medium body.

This is the last of 4 brews in the sampler, and in my opinion is undoubtedly the best beer in the pack. That being said - there is no shortage of high quality German wheat beers, and while this one is quite enjoyable, it's not spectacular either.

Final Grade: 3.71, a respectable B-. I have to give Dunkler Hirsch some credit - it's an easy beer to like, even if it is a bit simple or straightforward. The gift pack as a whole was a bit of a flop, but this one is its hidden jewel. Dunkels are hard to come by in these parts, but if I saw this stuff on shelves (being sold individually, or even in sixers) I would definitely consider getting it again. It's not a mindblowing experience, but it gets the job done and I wouldn't discourage anyone else from trying it.

I’m rather surprised at the low ratings on this, I’m really enjoying this one. Pours reddish brown with thick fluffy head, active carbonation keeps the head in place. Aroma of roast grains, toast, pumpernickel. Taste is smooth, milldy bitter, more pumpernickel and prunes. Usual weizen notes of banana and bubblegum in there too. Easy to drink, almost gone before the review is finished.
