From Hipercor. In Bavaria hefe glass. Playing Draw Slasher. Sweet and highly drinkable, with some notes to raisins. Light body but pleasant feel and correctly hopped to compensate sweetness

What do we have here? Excellent clear copper lager with kinda beige head, stiff monolith, lasting long. Smell - bear den, slightly diluted, woodcutter's sweat.) Taste is more sweet, malty, low hop profile. Good landbier with light body and low carbon dioxide.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass

L: Pours a semi-opaque mahogany color. Thick off-white head that falls slowly.

S: Toasted grains and brown sugar.

T/F: Semi-sweet malts and brown sugar. Not overly complex. Mild hops at the finish. Fairly carbonated and a bit fizzy on the mouthfeel.

O: Overall... I just wasn't all that impressed, and not one of the better dunkels I had in Germany... possibly better on tap? Not bad by any stretch, but no reason to re-visit either.

Pours to a dark amber.
Doesn't smell like much.
Sweet taste but really I think it looks more interesting than how it tastes.
Mouth feel is a bit more interesting than a normal lager.
Overall decent, would buy again but it didn't impress that much.

The beer comes in a medium brown color.

The beer offers a pop of toasted malt in the front. Then onto a sweet spice and nutty toasted flavor. The beer dries out on the finish with some lager yeast.

A good example of this classic style.

The Holzar Bier, which they described as an Export, was lacking. It wasn't horrible, and I've had really good Exports, but there were very few sweet Pils malt flavors and some bitterness up front, but overall, bland. It was from the Allgäu, in Bayern, so I expected more, I guess. The mouthfeel was wonderfully thick, which helped me give it a 3.

Bought this for the swing top bottle and have had it before and enjoyed it.
Pours dark amber with a two finger cream white head that departs soon. Leaves good amounts of lace on the glass.
Aroma is of figs or raisens.
Taste is sweet dark malts with just enough hops to keep the sweetness at bay.
Mouthfeel is a bit thin but alright for the style. Carbonation is just right.
Overall a tasty lager and well recommended for the style.
Note: No telling what the age is on this beer.

A: The beer is clear dark amber in color and has some hues of brown and yellow with no visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high frothy off white head that died down, leaving a patch of bubbles in the center and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of chocolate and nutty malts are present in the nose along with hints of earthy yeast.
T: The taste has flavors of chocolate and nutty malts along with a light amount of malty sweetness and hints of earthy yeast.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a bit smooth on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is a fair representation of the style and goes down rather easily.

500ml bottle from "Grocery Outlet" of all places! $4.01 Pours a slightly hazy amber colour with a small yet persistent cream coloured head. Very enjoyable malty, fruity aromas..really stands out for me. Taste is similar to the aroma but the creamy maltiness steals the show. Some small amount of grassy hop in the end. Very smooth and thick palate..easy going. I have to go against the grain on this i really like this and will be buying more. Excellent rainy weather beer.

Picked up this one my last trip to Der Berliner Kindl in Black Mtn., NC. $5.50 for one swing-top .5 liter bottle. Poured into a chilled tulip glass.

Appearance 4.0: Unexpectedly pours out a deep, golden-brown. Half-inch head quickly dissolved into fizzy, CO2 foamy residue.

Smell 3.75: Nice bouquet. Deep barley notes and a slight sweetness. Very subdued.

Taste 4.00: Front is a dry and refreshing. Middle is where some slight hints of caramel-barley sweetness creeps in and delights the palate. Finish is where some unexpected hints of raisins, wood rosin, and caramel barley sneaks in. Aftertaste fades away quickly and in a refreshing way.

Mouthfeel: 4.0: OK level of carbonation and is clearly 100% CO2.

Overall 4.0: Dry, smooth and imminently sessionable, this beer would also be excellent with food. I could see myself downing more than one stein of this bad vogel next time I get the chance.

Holzar-Bier has a thick, cream-colored head and a dark, reddish-brown appearance, with some bubbles clinging to the side and a small amount of lacing left behind. The aroma is of dark-roasted malt, brown bread, sweetness, and tea. Taste is of old, sweet, malt, dark fruit, like prunes, and almost no hop bitterness. There is also the tea note in the flavor. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Holzar-Bier finishes wet, sweet, and fairly drinkable. Overall, this is a very good beer, and I would say that it's worth a try.

The color is a beautiful deep amber. It looks like a fine glass of Scotch. Nearly no head.

Smell is sweet, reminiscent of caramelized fruit and raisins on dark, whole wheat bread.

Flavor is light up front and strong in the back, peaking as you swallow. There is a healthy proportion of dark cereal grains and bourbon without the alcohol profile. The "bourbon" is light, as if it were a cup of watered down vanilla and wood.

Feels light, with a slight tannic kick in the back during the finish.

Pours a clear golden brown, generous head that dissipates quickly. Malty aroma - this bottle had a mash smell to it, somewhat metallic (it traveled far so may have suffered a bit as a result). Taste is similar to many dunker lagers - surprisingly light and refreshing, with a slightly bitter aftertaste (and metallic with this bottle). Bready and malty in the background. A good example of the surprisingly light dunked beers that I have tasted from Germany.

Clear brown color with about a finger of clingy white head. Toffee, fig jam, and caramel malt on the nose. subtle earthy-dirt like hop.

Very clean, medium bodied with faint carbonation. Rounded sweetness and creamy mouthfeel. Same flavors in the mouth that are on the nose but everything is subtle and proportionate. Finishes clean and crisp. Delivers clean malt taste without being over bearing and without lingering sweetness while remaining refreshing. Simple but good. Very refreshing actually.

Poured from the flip top bottle into a 1/2 liter stein a deep rich bronze color with a fluffy crown atop that never completely subsided,a great pour with deep rich color.Alot of caramel mixed with toasted grain in the nose, the nose suggests alot of sweetness.A little thin in the feel but it is pretty smooth, sweet caramel with underlying chocolate malts, slightly toasted flavors in the finish,a tinge iron comes into play as well. Not bad but not much complexity to the beer,I think it would be nice to drink next to a fire on a cold Bavarian night though.

Appearance: Pours a clear ice tea color with a modest , but creamy head that leaves a fairly nice trace behind

Smell: Toasted brown bread, with hints of caramel and pecans

Taste: Toasted, brown bread, up front, with a developing caramel and pecan flavor; after the swallow, a bit of grain arrives, but the finish is on the sweet side

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with low to moderate carbonation

Overall: Easy to drink but a bit on the sweet side for the style

A beer a little above the average exponent of the style, not bad not excellent just good enough for trying.

A: Brown with some reddish hues inside with a small head and medium carbonation that forms a small permanent layer on top of the beer.

S: Robust malty aroma of course the malts are toasted and the smell is like should with small variances around this.

T: The tasting is not that robust even the center is full toasted barley is somehow not to powerful

M: The sensation is nice, refreshing, not bitter as should also not sweet with a medium ending not to pronounced but nice to the pallet.

This poured a two finger off white head upon a deep copper body ebbing to a nice collar of fine foam. Little in the way of lacing. The scent is a clean soapy hops with white grapes and raisin with some malt backing. The taste follows the nose although it did not quite live up to the scent. Slightly sweet with some grain and noble hops. Light bodied with a well balanced bitterness, this is a clean crisp drinkable brew with a dry lingering finish. Nothing spectacular but definitely an enjoyable brew.

Appearance: It has a nice dark amber/brown color to it. It has a nice white head that dies down moderately and leaves some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitly give out hints of sweet roasty malts, dark fruit, caramel and nuts.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a nice sweet roasty malt character with a dark fruitiness, some caramel and some earthy hops bringing a slight bitterness.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

A: Pours a dark mahogany brown with a modest, off-white head of dense foam. Retention is okay, settling to a healthy ring of foam and leaving scant lacing.

S: Rich, bread, sweet, and slightly roasty Munich malts with a lush dark fruit character dominates the nose, providing notes of black and red cherries and candied figs. Nobles hops are present but faint, floral and grassy.

T: Mildly sweet Munich malts 'spin off' into distinctly biscuity, bready, and grainy malt notes with nutty and caramel undertones throughout and some mild dark fruit notes (cherries and raisins) towards the finish. Slightly resiny noble hops in the finish.

M: Body on the light end of medium with crisp pinprick carbonation that drinks smoothly. The balance is phenomenal as aromatic hops bring just enough bitterness to give the malty flavour profile a clean, dry finish. Practically begs to be sessioned.

D: A well-done Dunkel, exactingly to-style, that's flavourful and exceedingly drinkable. It isn't complex or inventive, but does something simple and orthodox so well that it's more than worthwhile.

Pours a rich amber color, plenty of carbonation bubbles. The head is two finger a first then settles down to a thick lace around the glass. Retention is great!

The aroma is thick with sweet malts and sweet soft wheat. There is a touch of hop bitterness.

Medium bodied with a dry slightly hopped finish. Some of the malt lingers.

Overall this is a great Lager! Need I say more!
