I sampled some Hirschbrau beers when they first made it into the country not too long ago. They were victims of the trans-Atlantic journey and subsequently were hit or miss. This one is very much a hit. Gorgeous sunny golden color, crystal clear upon first pour, then tawny and lush on the second. Big blossoming head that fades. The bottle is no slouch either, a picturesque wheat-cutting scene and a welcome diversion from most other German packages that are typically no-nonsense. This is a fine hefe, right in the middle of the road for the style, perhaps veering a little towards the light/krystal end of the spectrum. Beeswax aroma. Apples, caramel, brown sugar, lemon all part of the generous flavor. Assertively refreshing, superbly balanced with a more prominent hop than is typically found in Bavarian weissebiers. Mouthfeel soft and velvety although not super-lustrous. I am a weissebier nut, so you might thing my review is skewed favorably. That may be, but consider it in a different way: I have tried a lot of Bavarian wheat beers and this stands up there with the best of them.

Touring the place now, great historical tour of Hirsch in Wurmlingen. Two thumbs up for the Dark Weizen Beer!
