500ml can - some post shoveling my corner lot on a relatively warm late November day brew. Shovel beer?
This beer pours a hazy, medium orange-brick amber colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, finely foamy, and fairly creamy off-white head, which leaves some random archipelago lace around the glass as it lazily recedes.
It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, a lesser edgy wheatiness, a touch of free-range char, somewhat phenolic yeast, damp banana chips, mild white peppercorn and clove spicy notes, and some plain leafy, weedy, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is semi-sweet, bready and grainy caramel malt, wet wheat crackers, bruised bananas, sweet red apples, a retreating yeastiness, faint ashy notes, muddled generic spice, and more understated earthy, musty, and dead floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is quite active in its palate-caressing frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and mostly smooth, with a wee airy creaminess arising shortly after take-off here. It finishes off-dry, the malt and big fruity essences carrying on like childhood pals.
Overall - this is a perfectly acceptable version of the style, all flavour points hit well enough upon. Simple, easy to drink, and perhaps a tad sweet, but that particular misstep can be alleviated by some spicy tomato soup, the perfect salve on any winter day.

Poured from the 500mL can into a pint glass. Bought in Shanghai China from a local grocery store.
A: The beer is a dark brownish amber with a good amount of light tan head that sticks around for a little while and then dissipates into some chunks atop the beer.
S: Has a good spicy banana bread aroma to it. Lots of spiced fruit and some clove in there. All the elements of a good dunkel. Surprised at how solid the bread aroma is. Very nice.
T: Tastes very sweet. Heavy on the fruit with not much malt in there to balance things out. Almost sugar sweetened it seems. Candied apples and citrus dominate. Not much spice to be had here. Some bubble gum in there as well. Pretty cloying, and somewhat disappointing after such a promising smell.
F: Mouthfeel is just a bit flat but overall pretty good; not too watery.
Overall: This is a pretty good find for China. Great classic aroma and looks pretty good as well. Unfortunately to pieces don't quite come together in the taste due to the heavy sweetness. Good change of scenery here but may not pick up again.

Poured into a glass from a pint can.
A-Deep golden, light brownish/cloudy orange. Carbonation noticeable. A little too filtered in my opinion. Most likely for import. It's probably pasteurized, too. A quick 2 finger head that dissipated quickly into a thin bubbly surface. Trace, to no lace left on the glass.
S-Picked up some light spice, some fruit, clove, banana, and sweet malt. Decent aroma.
T-Some clove, sweet malt, caramelized dark fruits, perhaps a little banana. Not bitter at all; in fact the overall taste was quite sweet. A little dry in the aftertaste. Taste was decent, but boring and not as interesting as other dunkelweiss beers I've had in the past. There were some sips that were just flavorless and flat!
M-Syrupy and moderate to full bodied. Carbonation was heavy in this beer. At times it felt like soda water. Not too pleased with that. This could have been a fresher tasting beer.
Overall, meh. I tried a Helles Hefeweizen from this same brewery and it was really tasty and satisfying compared to this Dunkelweiss. I would drink this beer again if the opportunity arose, but I wouldn't seek it out. There are better dunkelweiss beers out there.
Happy New Year!
