What a strange beer this is. Very unique. Label says "Altfrankisches Vollbier" and it's dated best by 27.06.24. Pours like a filtered Marzen. Nose is nutty, earthy, caramelized malt, and a bit of funk. Same in the flavor, with the addition of truly complex malt character; funky, earthy, barny, smoky. Really fits the intention of the style, which is an old-style Marzen from Franconia. Difficult to define but a joy to drink. So glad I picked this up...a must-try!

It was dark amber in color with bright white foam on top. It had a little bitterness up front, and then some more in the back & as aftertaste... very much Noble hops. It was, however, mostly a very malty beer with sweetness of caramel and bready flavors. It was quite full bodied. Overall, it tasted like a cross between a Helles and Mårze, but leaning closer to a Märzen. I liked it a lot and want to buy more bottles to confirm. this.

Pours a filtered, saturated amber-brown color with a fluffy big head.

Smells of toasted barley, toffee malts, dry earth and walnut shell. Its profound maltiness features a nice, leafy dryness, still staying heavy on its toffee quality.

Has a soft, silk mouthfeel among a vivid carbonation, resulting in a easy drinking, refreshing beer.

Smells of slightly scentened wood and toffee coated malts among a vivid, subdued metallic quality. A nice dryness adds to the profound malts, also revealing a nice, tart hint. Finishes heavy on the toffee, accompanied by the bubbly carbonation, straight forward, with a pleasant sweetness.

Focussed on sweet malts, no real taste evolution takes place, while it exhibits a great smashability.

Dark amber colour, clear, slightly tanned head which soon went but lacing was retained. Grassy aroma, notes of malt and rasin, slight hop. Tasted some caramel and malt. Finish long and roasted. Smooth texture, medium body, slight carbonation. Overall Altfränkisch means a dark Kellerbier, not unlike other beers that say this on them.

I bought this beer a few weeks ago when i was in the south of Germany. There are good beermarkets where you can buy these beers. Dursty is a good shop. Bottle best before december 2011.

Poured in my Struise beerglass this beer looks ok. The fluid looks like a strong tea. Two fingers of lightbrown head which disappears after a pretty ling while.

A light malty smell and a flat watery taste make that this beer is not very special. It is drinkable but no more than that. With some more body it would be better.

Simon KG brewery special brew.
0.5 l bottle.

Looks chestnut brown, with a beige head. Modest carbonation.

Smell and taste are dark malts. Lots of spice (koriander, nutmeg, clove) and some citrus in it.

Light mouthfeel. Very flavoursome. It lingers in the mouth.
Overall, a nice brew again , from this brewery. Refreshing and interesting.

Bottle acquired in REWE stores, Bamberg. Served into a halleroder mini-stein/Bierkrug (.3L) in me friend's gaff in Bamberg, while she prepared me a local Franconian (NOT Bavarian!!) dish. Reviewed live. Labelled as a "Vollbier", obviously - which directly translates to "Full beer".

A: Four finger head of nice cream, fair thickness, and good retention. Clear copper colour. Transparent. Appealing.

Sm: Amber hops with wonderful malt. Germans know how to treat their malt. Some nutty notes on the fringe.

T: Amber malt with notes of caramel and a hop-laden climax. Some cream on the finish. Not as yeasty as anticipated. A bit simple but certainly pleasant and refreshing. Not as crisp as a lager or (Czech) pilsner, but good nonetheless. Well balanced and built for the style; this is a zwickel not a keller. The caramel seems to emerge more with each swig. Maybe even a fringe note of chocolate somewhere hidden in back; it's certainly elusive but welcome.

Mf: Cream-laden, smooth, and wet. Slightly coarse on the climax to accentuate the added flavour. Doesn't quite match the flavours of the body perfectly. A weird dryness enters just on the end, negatively affecting the echoing aftertaste, but it's subtle enough to not matter a great deal.

Dr: Very drinkable, and very well priced. A great beer in the style.
