Slottskällans Imperial Stout is an Imperial Stout in the "English"-school. I haven't tried this one since back in 2007, so it's exciting to try it and give it a proper review;

The beer pours a clean red/black color with a nice beige foam. It looks almost a bit gothic considering the new black & white bottle.

Aroma holds lots of roasted notes together with some typical English hops, East Golding maybe? Anyways, there are also some slight hints of dried fruits and oak (not in the whisky-kind-of-way though).

Taste is very bitter, I think from the hops, but maybe even more from the hardly rosted malts. You can really tell that this is an imperial stout and not an imperial porter since it's quite dry and not very sweet.

I tried it to some Figs & Almond chocolate, worked out quite nicely! Really interesting to try something sweet to a such an dry imperial stout. Highly recommended! Slottskällans at it's finest!

Aged since 2008, some rust on the cap. Low carbonation. Low hop character. Just enough bitterness for the style. LOADS of chocolate in the aroma and taste, some roasty character in the background. So smooth! Beautiful, and almost too drinkable.

A: Poured a dark brown liquid which starts of with a slightly brown/red colour. The head is one finger high and light brown with large bubbles. The head rests for quite some time.

S: Lots of cocoa with hints of grinded coffee. Roasted malts and toffee. The alcohol is there, but very welll hidden. I can also smell oatmeal.

T: Lots of chocolate and roasted malts. Some candy sugar. Finishes off with alcohol, dry chocolate and bitter (English?) hops.

M: The alcohol gives it a full-bodied mouthfeel. It is slightly more carbonated than I expected it to be.

O: An Russian Imperial Stout that is very balanced in every aspect.

2011 edition served into a snifter.

A: Black with a thick cocao coloured head which dissipates slowly but gives a lasting layer through the whole session. It leaves a lot of lacing on the glass and it appears somewhat bubbely.

S: The first two things I get are classic smells, chocolate and raisins. I also get wet hay, esters and roasted smells, tending towards coffee. Some alcohol comes through as well.

T: The roastedness is the first thing that shows itself as it hits my pallate, together with alcohol. I also get some fruity esters and dark chocolate but not as much as the smell makes me anticipate. I also get peppery tastes of English hops, an easy recognisable bitter taste. The aftertaste is sweet and has some vague notes of honey.

M: In my opinion a bit carbonated for a RIS. The body is smooth but I would say medium and not full. It has an alcoholic warmth.

O: In my opinion it´s a bit too dominated by the roasted notes and the English hops. I would like some more fruits to it. But still a complex and qualitative beer, it gets downrated because of the stiff competition that is among RISs.
It would probably evolve good with age.

Thanks to Baggio for the beer. MUCH Appreciated
330 ML poured into a CCB snifter

A-- Poured a cola color and settled a murky brownish black. Short lived half finger that was light brown color that went to film. Decent head retention but also quickly fades away leaving bits of a soapy lacing on the sides of the glass.

S-- Roasted coffee, roasted malts, rootbeer, candied sugar, and slight amounts of licorice. Well hidden ABV. Like the smell. Inviting and warm, as in the roasted coffee part.

T-- Coffee, sugar, dark fruits and roasted malts. A bit thin but more like a watered down strong coffee with sugar. Well balanced taste.

M-- Lighter style IS and higher carbonated. Still works as get a lot of hop bitterness and coffee in the mid and back. Finishes a sort of sweet dairy milk with sweet coffee finish and a bit of an acid burn to boot. A lot of tannins on the gums and dry after taste.

O-- Not bad. A little sweet at times but the feel is really nice. Not big or over the top at all. Easy drinking IS and is a good change up from what I have been having of late. Nice little find and would do this again.
