From the bottle, it pours a clear light yellow gold with a modest, though long lasting, white head. Lacing. The nose gets a dose of grassy hops and light malt. The taste is light bitterness, followed by light malt.

8 months before sell-by date.
Poured in a pils (narrow) stein.

Lovely frothy head, and great lacing, make for a great looking beer.
Mouthfeel is great too, which makes it very drinkable.
Taste is good initially, but there is a cardboardy taste (which I also notice in the smell) that comes strongly through, overpowering the nice mild balance of typical pils flavours.
It's still an easy beer to drink.

Brought back from the Black Forest by the lovely Tanja and poured into a nifty Samuel Adams Boston Lager glass. Looks typical of the style, a steely yellow with plenty of bubbles and a bone-white froth on top.

Sweet notes of honey, straw, lemon tea, and a zing of musty spice that sometimes gets confused with skunk in beers like this.

The beginning of the sip is super, with grassy, light lemon sweetness/tartness, given oomph by crispy hops and an even crisper, drier finish. With the drying comes a tacky astringency, or perhaps a skunk-ish element. Generous carbonation lends the beer sharpness as pilsner hops ride nicely through finish, with a puckering sensation left in the mouth long after the sip.

It's quite alright, but definitely not the best in its class. Nothing offensive about it, and it's always nice to have a German pils made by people who truly love it and not by uncaring corporate mongers. Ultimately, though, it feels inferior to many of the country's finer takes on the style. Worth a shot if you're in the Freiburg area, but if you find yourself lucky enough to be in the vicinity, do not pass up Ganter's own Wodan, a truly superior beer.
