This is a pretty tasty beer. Nice aroma, rich and sweet, with a dark mahogany color. It lacks much in the way of carbonation, but it does have a rich sweet flavor. A little smoky with hints of ripe fruit. Lack of carbonation hurts the mouth feel, but overall a good beer.

Two weeks before I visited the Salmon Creek Brewpub, this cranberry colored ale took home a gold medal at the Spring Beer and Wine Fest in Portland. It was judged as a Belgian Ale though I was told at the bar it’s actually a doppelbock. It seems that the high ABV content conflicted somehow with competition guidelines requiring it to be judged as a Belgian. Stylistically, it bears a closer resemblance to a doppelbock, though I have no knowledge of what yeast strain is used or what temperature it’s fermented at.

Call it what you will, this ale comes served in a suitable goblet and has low carbonation and a bright fruity nose akin to bubblegum. A hint of strawberry colors the smell. The taste resembles cherry cola with a modicum of bitterness and no detectable alcohol presence. Head and lace are absent.

An enjoyable beer to be certain, but two weeks after the fest it seemed a little tired.
