2.22/5  rDev -37.5%
look: 3 | smell: 2.25 | taste: 2 | feel: 2.5 | overall: 2.25

Appearance: Brown-black body with a tall, but thin, tan coloured head. Leaves a small amount of lacing down the glass.

Aroma: Black american-style coffee (not espresso), roast grains, and a little bit of 'dry' sweetness.

Taste: Quite bitter and burnt flavours at the front, with some smoother (but not smooth enough) caramelised malt following. Finishes with a slightly mettalic ash taste that is quite unpleasant. A bit flat and thin. I can tell that it definitely is not a stout!

Mouthfeel: Quite dry, with medium carbonation. Quite a light body, but too harsh and astringent to be enjoyable.

Overall: No thanks. I didn't enjoy this at all, but am not sure if it is the beer or just the style, as I haven't had another Schwarzbier before. I think I can understand what it is trying to achieve, so I will try to find a better example of the style.

Pours a dark cola colour with thick, frothy tan head, sizzles as it sinks slowly with light pock marks appearing, not leaving a whole heap of lace. There seems to be a lot of very small bubbles pounding the head from beneath. Does look very fizzy, quite cola-esque, but pretty good.

Nose has a rich, deep sourness to it, roasted and slightly burnt. Fair amount of espresso coffee with a light cocoa character and an astringent spice to it, like licorice or even, dare I say it, a touch of cayenne. A bit lofty or slight on the fragrance, a nice blend but not much to it.

Taste is very earthy in its bitterness, with a distinct burnt flavour that suggests itself without being especially potent, oddly enough. A slight cocoa character on the front is soon overtaken by the roastedness, which has hints of charcoal, espresso, soil and red apple skin. Palate stops quite short and falls short as far as flavour goes. Finishes quite dry, but flavour-wise is fairly weak, with nothing really happening there.

Mouthfeel is accurately described on the label as "never heavy in texture", but the label doesn't mentioned that that makes it a bit thin instead. There is enough body to elevate it above the 'watery' level though. Drinkable enough beer but not very hearty. All in all a bit blah.

A - Pours a dark brown almost black colour with an of white head that retains well

S - Expresso and toffe are the main aromas.

T - Dark chocolate and toffee with a well rounded roasted finish.

M - A bit watery and slightly overcarbonated.

D - Good in places but bad in others

Fairly average schwarzbier. Pours a nice deep ruby brown with pretty good lacing. Aroma is mostly malty caramel with a touch more roast and a bit of nuttiness in the flavor. I guess if schwarzbier is your thing then you'll like this one. For me, it's all a tad thin and uninteresting and doesn't quite stand up to American and German versions.

A - Poured a deep black colour with one fingered beige head that retained fairly well

S - Roasted chocolate and coffee malts although not that pronounced.

T - Strong coffee, chocolate biscuit with a hint of caramel with a slight bitter or metallic finish.

M - Medium bodied with light carbonation

O - Not a bad beer but lacks a little in complexity to really make you wanting more. A little disappointing in the finish.

A slightly above average schwarzbier, burnt roastiness on the finish, thinnish body, bit of brown sugar flavour in there which i didn't particularly like, but a nice enough brew.

Once again with Monteith's beers, the head dies really fast, inoffensive, bland, slightly hoppy, a bit burnt, slightly artificial with some chemicals present, I would drink this again, only for the fact that i bought a 6 pack.

A - Deep black with a foamy light brown head. Head quickly dissipates to a thin quarter inch. No lacing.

S - Predominantly roast with a touch of sweet malt. Nothing amazing.

T - Plenty of roast with some faint coffee notes. A slight sweetness across the mid and back palates. Watery ending. Could be more interesting.

M - Thin and watery. Medium carbonation level. This is just a bit too light for what is described as a 'hearty' beer.

D - This is easy enough to drink. It goes down smoothly but lacks the interest and punch to make this a really drinkable beer.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a small head. Smell is of roasted malts with a touch of coffee. Taste is mild compared to the smell, again malts with a hint of coffee. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and has average drinkability. Overall this is a fairly decent beer.

Schwarzbier style- 5.2% abv. This poured a dark black brown, slightly clearish. It smelled of light roasted malt, some espresso and a touch of vanilla extract. It tasted light, with a good chariness to it, toasted malts and roasted espresso. It had decent drinkability because it was such a light drinking beer. Hands down, the only decent one that is passable for Montieth's if you have to go there- which I advise that you don't.

nice head on top dense black...great massive topographic map of lacing

slight toasty malt nose, but nothing jumps out.

taste is a little better than the nose...some flavor...very smooth but nothing amazing. nice creamy mouthfeel with a slight crispness making this drinkable and sessionable but not sure i'd want to get too bored. one of the lightest black beers i've ever had. a great beer for after mowing the lawn if you want refreshment and some flavor.

A: Deep, dark brown/black color. Poured a 2 finger dirty tan head that dissipated to a half finger and held to the first drink. Lots of sticky broken lace.

S: Rich, sweet malts; molasses and chocolate. A little lemon and burnt toast.

T: Bitter chocolate (bitterness is a general comment too). Seems like coffee and black bread in the middle. Finishes sharply bitter and acidic.

M: Light-to-medium body. Moderate (balanced) carbonation. Rich and dry middle to bitter finish.

O: Good malt character and fair balance. The acidic note and seeming masked hopping were drawbacks for me.

A – It pours way black with a good two fingers of tan head and lots of splattery lacing

S – The aroma is of roastiness, raisins, alcohol and cinnamon, then dark bread, spices and banana. Better than it tastes.

T – It tastes pretty good, if a bit macro perhaps. This tastes a lil too roasty for a Schwarzbier and drinks more like a porter. It has decent flavor, but it is a bit watered down. What is there is vague hints of chocolate, dark breadiness and even coffee-chicory; not bad stuff, just a bit underpowered.

M – Very creamy mouthfeel

D – Nice enough brew.

This beer poured out with a dark black body, the head was fluffy and ran colored. The smell of the beer was roasted and had some acidic aromas to it. The taste of the beer was like light burnt coffee with some nuts and a touch of hoppy bitterness to finish things off. The mouthfeel was on the lighter side and wasn't too bad. Overall it was a pretty typical black lager, not too much to rave about.

A:One finger head of poor retention but decent cream. Black colour. Appealing.

Sm: Caramel, alcohol, light notes of chocolate/toffee. Coffee on the label is missing.

T: Chocolate, a bit of roasted barley, toffee, a hint of caramel on the finish. Well built and balanced, except for the finish, which is lackluster in comparison to the body. It could definitely use more cream, especially on the open.

Mf: Far too wet for the style. The smoothness works in its favour until after the body, when it highlights the failures of the finish. It ought to get coarser on the climax to stretch the notes of the body into the finish.

Dr: It's a good beer at a high price. Its ABV is moderately present in the taste, which is problematic. All around a beer worth trying.

Bottle from Woolworth's.

A - Pours pitch black with lot's of carbonation coming up the sides. One finger of light brown head. A decent ring of lace at the top and a film of retention.

S - Coffee, a nice milk chocolate, some cola.

T - Cola, coffee, roasted malt. Cola is more dominant but restrained by the roasted malt.

M - Good carbonation, medium body and a sweetness in the finish.

O/D - Not a bad schwarz but largely forgettable. Not a whole lot going on. Pretty average.

Served a bit cold and with a smallish, light tan head plus some lace. Color is an opaque black brown. Aroma is malt, roast, dark ripe fruit, gravel. Flavor is like nose, more robust, plus carbonic tang, hint of coffee. Body is a shade thin, good carbonation. Finish is like flavor, on short side in length, and balanced. One of the better Montheith's I've had here.

Appearance- Pours dark red/black with two finger off white head which leaves a light lacing all the way down to the bottom of the glass mug.
Smell-Slight chocolate cofee malt aroma.
Taste-Coffee and chocolate malt with a dry bitter finish,a bit short.
Mouthfeel-Medium mouthfeel decent carbonation.
Drinkability-A drinkable brew from Monteiths one of the better beers they brew and it's good beer for the price.

Ap. Nice very dark near black, but not opaque. MInimal brown head.
Sm. Malty and caramel first with a hidden tartness. Second and third sniff gave me a sourish or spoiled? off odor.
Ta. Chocolately at first and some slightly burnt roastiness, then a little of that sourish off thing.
Mf. Nice, full, thickish.
Dr. Very good, but not great. Can't figure the off odor/taste that showed up a couple of times.

Monteith's Black

Appearance: Dark brown, small head, and okay lacing.

Smell: Dark malts, some cocoa, and slight grain.

Taste: Dark malts, light coffee, slight grain, slight hop, and a very light chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light and smooth.

Overall:
This isn't bad. It isn't very complex, but it is nicely brewed and smooth.

It has an interesting aroma, and its colour was interesting. However, its head was disappointingly weak, with no creaminess to and the main body of the beer was perversely watery. I couldn't believe how flat the beer was. I drank several of these bottles and the experience was the same. The scores of other reviewers are ridiculous. This is a second-rate beer. Don't waste your time on it.

Pours black with a small fading tan head.
Nose shows roasted malt, caramel and faint smoke. Pretty nice, quite sweet smelling.
Flavours are along the same lines: roasted malt, soft coffee and a little sweet caramel.
Could do with more carbonation.

Thin mouth feel, low fizz and not much head. Smells of charcoal malts with a slight hint of vegemite. Low acidity and very clean on the palate for a dark beer, without much of an aftertaste. The flavour is fairly straight forward, with hints of caramel biscuit as it warms up. Very smooth, easy drinking.

I cant believe i have not reviewed this ive had it plenty a time but to be honest its been a while and thought why not,it pours a dark ruby brown hue with a three finger creamy head that stays and leaves heaps of lacing, the smell is black coffee, caramel malts, herbal hops and dark chocolate, the mouthfeel is just over light bodied and very sessionable and has tastes of dark belgian chocolate, caramel malts, herbal hops, cocoa and finished just like a black coffee bittersweet and overall i like what someone stated earlier Monteiths is just like Australias James Squire its above average and usually best option at a country/or lame pub but theres way better out there thats for sure cheers.

Poured into a snifter.

A: the deep walnut brown color is just a few shades short of black. A fluffy cream cap has OK retention. As it falls to a patchwork blanket, it leaves a smattering of lace.

S: Molasses struck me first. Let me nose linger revealed aromas of baking chocolate and lemon.

T: Baking chocolate is the central theme. Bitterness is mild and has a burnt quality. The beer gets rather acidic toward the end.

M: The medium-light body is semi-dry and has the right level of fizz.

D: This is an OK beer overall. The acidic finish keeps this beer from garnering a higher score.
